  • Fiba Asia: Only one naturalized cager allowed
    Tuesday, July 28, 2009 11:37:00 AM

FIBA Asia secretary-general Dato Yeoh Choo Hock has reportedly taken notice of the efforts by some countries in the region to recruit foreigners and pass them off as their national players.

China's Sohu.com reported that Dato Yeoh made it clear that only one foreign player could be naturalized and play in the Fiba Asia Men's Basketball Championship, which begins in Tianjin, China, on Aug. 6.

"The rule is clear. There can only be one player who changes his nationality to play for a new country and we will carefully examine every player on the rosters to make sure the rule is properly implemented," said Dato Yeoh.

The issue broke wide open at the Jones Cup in Taipei, when Iran's head coach Veselin Matic claimed in a post-game press conference that Qatar, Lebanon and Jordan benefited from "naturalizing American imports."

Matic stressed that Iranian players were all native players and that the Asian Championship "is a tournament that belongs to Asian players."

He went on to charge that some countries have been naturalizing American imports "to make their team stronger. The championship looks like a pro game right now."

While Matic mentioned Lebanon, Jordan and Qatar, he said the Qataris are the worst and hardly have a local player on the roster.

Jordan's coach, the fiery Mario Palma, was visibly angry over Matic's allegations and said the Iranian coach should focus on how to make Iran a better team instead of making false accusations on the import issue. He also claimed that not all Iranian players are native.

Standard Today, www.insidesports.ph and Viva Sports did some research and also obtained information from a Lebanese citizen, who confirmed that NBA player Jackson Vroman had been naturalized but that Matthew Wayne Freije, a 6'10", 240-pound Vanderbilt University forward, who was drafted by the Miami Heat in the second round of the 2004 NBA Draft, was being passed off as a Lebanese when he reportedly was an American.

Freije scored a tournament high 39 points and pulled down 11 rebounds against South Korea on Saturday and proved a major asset to the team.

Also being paraded as a Lebanese was University of Kentucky's Antwain Barbour, a flashy 6'5" guard/forward, who represented the USA National Team at the World University Games of 2001 in China.

Barbour, nicknamed "Teardrop," was a CBA All Star in 2005 and won the CBA Championship in 2006. He is regarded as a pure slasher, who gets to the basket with ease.

Iran has 7'2" Hamed Haddadi who plays for the Memphis Grizzlies in the NBA made a big impression in the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, where he emerged as the top rebounder and shot blocker and was the lone Olympian to average a double-double with 16.6 points and 11.2 rebounds a game. However, there's no question that Haddadi is an Iranian. Ronnie Nathanielsz - Manila Standard Today

    • qatar has been there with its imports for 6 years and now u notice ? but as soon as leb and jordan pose a dangerous threat to iran especially lebanon they start accusing ....1st all it doesnt need a detective to figure out vroman is naturalized(1 player only) but i didnt get the 2nd part about matt he is a LEBANESE/AMERICAN u can tell from his family name and NO he did not change his family name like all the qatari players he has been using this name since he was born go back to his recent years and check his name in recent NBA years ....this is just like when qatar accused jamal maaytah of being german in 2007 and not being able to play and he is playing now and just like iran made accusations of lebanon being an american team before their final game in 2007 which ended up as a lucky win for Iran ....they were definitely scared after their 22pt loss a couple of days earlier ...if anything happens to let matt not play it would because of these rich and uneithical connections that some1 has just like what is happening with qatar which is letting all these africans play with no1 talking about it .

        • yes that is why qataris play as much imports as they want and at the same time it is y they try to weaken all the teams by cheating them out it is not enough what they r doing ....example:not letting maaytah play in 2007 ...if they dt let any of the lebanese/americans play and at the same time keep all the africans in qatar playing than this is a disgrace for basketball and they should cancel the asian champ. all 2gether ...infact just opening the subject abt jordan and lebanon ...i think they should disallow the africans to play right there

It's no wonder Qatar is getting weaker and weaker each year. They don't even have a strong grassroots program that can discover potentials who may replace some members of the national team.

With the exit of their American coach, Kent Davidson, I doubt they can get far in this year's 2009 Asian Champs, not to mention they are grouped with Kazakhstan and China then will eventually face Lebanon and Jordan in the next round.

            • I just want to share this (kinda off topic though)

In NBA Summer League Denver VS Portland, guess who's matched up with each other...

              CJ Giles(Den) VS Matt Freije(Por)...

they might see each other again sometimes carrying each other's flag in Asian Basketball...

              • Barbour should def be kicked out for passing off as an Lebanese, but since FIBA doesn't take these kinds of rules seriously, he won't be. Iran coach shouldn't waste his time, Fiba Asia won't do anything, if they did, like people said, Qatar would be playing with 3 players.

                    • I'm still worried of the possible crackdown by FIBA Asia

                      Countries who are at risk:

Korea- Because of their half-koreans notably the Sandrins and Atkins
                      Jordan- Because of Rasheim Wright
Lebanon- Because of Jackson Vroman and the foreign based Lebanese players
Philippines- Because half of the team is composed of fil-foreigners.

                      Comment

                      • the only teams at risk are qatar and RP but would not call it much of a risk since these teams are not really at the level of reaching the semis so not much to lose there ...jordanian and lebanese players are as legal as brian beshara and paul khoury who have played with the NT for several yrs but now the accusations are coming just cuz the new lebanese/americans for lebanon are really good and everyone knows their a team good enough for automatic qualifcations for the WC so some teams might be tryiing to break their team which means getting all other teams 3 qualification cards instead of 2 thats how every1 thinks abt but theres no way these players will not play unless some1 with really good connections comes in and ruins ...some1 with even greater connection than the qatari president of basketball who has 12 africans on the team but if that happens he also needs a good excuse he cant just come in and do smthng like this without giving a reason for every player ...like for qatar he game every1 new names and new passports and no1 can say anything cuz the africans he got suck and never played anywhere before so theres no history of them playing but in the cases of players like matt freijeh, daniel faris and jackson vroman there is nothing that can be said since jackson is the naturalized player(1 allowed) and daniel and matt both have lebanese family names and he cant even say we changed matt,s name since in the NBA this is the name hes registered in the years of 04-06 so nothing there that shows any unethical action by lebanese like in what qatar do ...so if there is nothing that can be given as an excuse than nothing can happen or the guy who is taking this action would be damaging himself as a basketball leading decision maker whoever he is and losing alot of credibility not just a member in the basketball federation but as a human being cuz only animals make decisions without any reason or cause

                        Comment

                        • I can't really understand why RP is at risk...

An RP player can be a filam if one of his parents is a Filipino by birth unlike Lebanon who considers the descendant thing that spans more generation of ancestry. But again different constitutions for two countries. So if FIBA will rule RP is not at risk I guess because the root of Filipino origin for our players is not that far, they are their mother or father.

                          • One day to go and it's game time!!!! now i will give my daily prediction as well as after ballgame thoughts......

For the first day Aug. 6, 2009....

                            Philippines vs Sri Lanka Phil.

this is a no-brainer, Phil. is too much for Sri Lanka....

                            Kazakhstan vs Qatar Kazakhstan

although i've only seen Qatar NT played once, i just believe Kazakhs is a better coach team and has better system.. if their outside shooting clicks, it will be a big problem for the Qataris....

                            Korea vs Japan Korea

this one is hard but Korea has always been a force in Asian basketball.. i think they will prevail in a hard win against the Japs...

                            Iran vs Chinese Taipei Iran

this game will be closer than it looks if Chinese Taipei's 3 point shot will find it's mark.. plus Iran have had problems against East Asian countries before..

                            India vs China China

                            there's nothin to discuss really..

Indonesia vs United Arab Emirates Indonesia

although i didn't see UAE play before, i think Indonesia will win against them based on papers.. also Indonesia have been doing well lately..

                            Kuwait vs Uzbekistan Uzbekistan

the size of Uzbekistan if true will definitely give the Kuwaitis problem..

                            Lebanon vs Jordan Jordan

now this one is the hardest to predict.. i would say on papers the Lebanese is one hell of a talented individuals, but as a team i rate them a notch lower than Jordan.. coach Mario Palma has really done a tremendoes job with his team.. i'm sure as early as now that they'll be in the Semis..

                            goodluck to all teams....

Nope, I believe Lebanon will win, but it will be very close. A lot of the forum members here are under rating Jordan simply because there isn't that many Jordanian members on this forums to boast about their national team.
