China will not send the true "National Team" but only a junior team.

The highest placed team (excluding China) directly qualifies to 2008 Beijing. The next 2 teams (excluding China) qualifies to the so-called FIBA Olympics qualifying tournament.

no 1 team goes to the fiba qualifying tournament .......so if lebanon gets 1st qatar 2nd and south korea 3rd......qatar will go not qatar and south korea

FIBA - Olympic qualifying tournament added for 2008 Olympics

SAITAMA (FIBA World Championship) - Twelve teams from throughout the world will participate in a new men's Olympic qualifying tournament in July 2008 to secure one of the final three berths for the Beijing Summer Games.

The tournament will take place from July 7-13 2008 in a yet-to-be announced location and will follow next summer's five continental qualification campaigns, which will yield seven Olympic spots - two each from Europe and the Americas and one a piece from Africa, Asia and Oceania.

The breakdown of the 12 teams participating in the July 2008 event is as follows: Europe will have four representatives, the Americas three, two each from Africa and Asia and one from Oceania - with the best ranked remaining teams from the 2007 continental qualifiers competing.

so its possible (which is not probbable!) that there will be 4 asian teams in Beijing Olympics! How many will they get in the FIBA Olympic qualify tournment anyway?

im talking about the fiba qualifying tournament ......lebanon will go to the olympics..........and qatar will play other good ranked teams in other continents who did not qualify to the olympics to qualify for the olympics...3 teams would be picked out of these 5 i think.......but as u know the asian teams will have the least chance so its better to qualify from the asian championship or 90% it will be over for these teams

I heard that the CBA reduced the # of games this season by 100 in order to have more time to prepare the nt for 2008, and I don't think the Chinese will risk losing a gold medal.

In addition why does east asia have 5 teams ?? Taiwan and Hong Kong rarely passes to the 2nd round ! or even Japan who finished last time on top 4 i think was 1999.

in west asia we have only 3 teams and there is a 4th team who should be in as well, lebanon,iran,jordan and syria all deserve to be in asia championship.

First of all , one team will be qualified to olympics games at chine next year .Chine had qualified cause this tournament will be in chine so 1 team will qualified behind chine.Lebanon (2nd fiba asia 2005 ) it's the most team prefer to qualified but other team will not be easy to defeat him like Quatar (3th fiba asia 2005 and second at doha games ) ,Iran (6th fiba asia 2005 and 3th doha games and have a lot of good players ) , and other .So 24th FIBA-Asia Championships [Sep 1 Japan] it will be some difficult to know who will be the team qualified behind chine specially that many country prepare those team like Kazakhistan ,jordan , syria , japan , south korea ,iran,lebanon,quatar and chine .Good luck lebanon and i wish a best participating and i hope win the first position .

it will be to our advantage that all teams in Asia will take the Philippines for granted and will not consider us as contenders because "Team Pilipinas" will definitely surprise a lot of people in the FIBA Asia Championship.

i'm not one to brag, but let's just say the Philippines will have its "coming out party" in Tokushima this August.

we may or may not qualify for the Olympics this August.

we may or may not win a lot of games.

but I assure you, our team will be fighting with a lot of heart and a lot of guts and will be among the top dogs in Asia once more after the FIBA Asia tournament.

China has named both its national team A team and its national team B team. The A team will play in various exhibition games this summer while the B team will play in the Asian Championships in Japan from July 28 through August 5.

Since China is automatically entered in the 2008 Olympics as the host nation, it has no need to win the Asian championship and can use that tournament as a tryout for younger players. Because the games for the A team are for practice rather than for national prestige, it can afford to use Ming Yao (226-C-80) and Yi Jianlian sparingly, and give all its top players opportunities to gain experience. It is especially important to give Yao sufficient rest this summer as he has suffered major injuries both last season and this season and China cannot risk that Yao will break down again in 2008.

The A team has scheduled games against NCAA competition. It will be interesting to see how the team fares against top US college teams.

There are 22 players on the A team and 16 players on the B team. It is possible that players will shift back and forth between the two teams based on performance. The A team has seven players who can play point guard while the B team has only two, Liu Xiaoyu and Luo Zhi. It is quite likely that one more point guard, and perhaps two, will be added from the A team for the Asian championship. There is also the World U19 Championship in Serbia from July 12 through July 22. Ding Jinghui, Li Xiaoxu, Zhou Peng, Liu Xiaoyu and Chen Jianghua will likely participate in that tournament.

Jiao Jian and Xie Libin did not make either team. Jiao is simply a tweener in international competition while Xie had a bad season this year after excelling the year before. Bateer has been left off either team and likely is now too slow to make the Olympic team. Ming Yao, Wang Zhizhi and Yi Jianlian are clearly superior to him at center and Tang Zhengdong, Zhang Songtao and even Mo Ke will be more effective at center in international competition.

Li Wei from Beijing Aoshen made the B team. He started ahead of A team selection Zhang Songtao for Aoshen's ABA team. He was better than Zhang in fast-paced ABA competition but Zhang may be a better fit for the national team. But Li does have an outside chance to make the Olympic team as a combo center-power forward. Zhang Jinsong, who played for the National Team in the Asian games, did not make either team but while he is listed as being born in September 1973, he is probably 35 years old or even older.
