    Mu Tiezhu

    I'm sure there are a lot of you who know about Mu Tiezhu. Sinobball mentioned his name in another thread, and I was wondering if anybody had some information about him, because there are so many myths about him. There isn't much reliable information about him on the internet. Does anybody have any pictures or videos of Mu? Or what about statistics? Was he really 7'10" and 400 pounds? Could he really dunk without leaving the ground? And did he score 80 points for the Bayi team?

    I have never watched him play but according to what was written online, he did score 80 pts once when his Bayi played Suzhou in a city tournament.

    As far as his height goes, well, he was definitely taller than Wilt Chamberlain


    Old timers could vividly remember the matchup between Mu Tiezhu and Yasutaka Okayama, a 7-6 giant drafted by Golden State Warriors. Mu completely outplayed the Japanese giant.

          Mu Tiezhu died at 59 of a heart attack in Beijing. RIP...

            Thanks for the sad news, Rik. Our first thoughts surely go with his family, friends, and fans.

            I wonder what kind of condition he was in during the last stages of his life. He looks pretty good in the picture you posted of him clapping, but I wonder how recent that is.

              Mu and Cnt visited Phil. in the early 70 for exhibition game. Then Phil.team
              reciprocate with visit to Beijing. In the Beijing game Phil. player were
              bundled with thick blanket in the bench because of the very cold
              weather.One Phil. player said the ball look just like an apple in the hand of Mu.

              This was the time when Phil and China had no diplomatic relation yet and this
              basketball diplomacy was the equivalent of the us china pingpong diplomacy.

                I remember Mu's height was mentioned as 7'1 so he is definitely not
                taller than Yao.

                  Any hoopsfan in China over 40 YO would tell you that Mu was constantly listed as 2.28m or 7'6 at the time when he was playing. Given normally Chinese reporting height in the measurement of bare foot, I'd say Mu > Yao as far as the height concerns.

                  I watched his game live and on tele numerous times between late 70s and early 80s, and even run into him in a Beijing shop at early 90s (still remember his shabby Chinese-made 4WD). His wedding to a 1.72m tall factory girl was quite a local news at the time.

                  A very nice giant. My prayer goes to his family.

                      No official mention of that whatsoever. He was from Shangdong province originally, where is no lots of "Hui". So most likely he was "Han" origin I reckon.

                        BEIJING, Sept. 14 (Xinhua) -- Former Chinese basketball star Mu Tiezhu died of heart attack in Beijing on Sunday noon, No. 309 PLA Hospital announced on Sunday afternoon. Mu was 59.

                        Mu, who stood 2.28 meters, two centimeters taller than Chinese NBA star Yao Ming, was a household name in China in the 1970s and 1980s.

                        The towering center joined the People's Liberation Army (PLA) in 1972 and made it to the Bayi (Chinese Army) team in 1973. Four years later, Mu was called to the national team.

                        Mu led the Chinese team to its first Asian championship title in 1977, the Asian Games gold medal in 1978 and a 11th-place finish in the world championship the same year.

                        Mu, who averaged over 20 points, had once scored 80 points in a domestic game.

                        The basketball giant ended his playing career in 1987 to coach the Bayi team and moonlight in movie business. He starred in a few comedy movies, such as "The Silly Manager", "Dark Corridor" and "Overnight Singing Star".

                        Mu, who had the PLA rank as a senior colonel of the civil service, retired in 2000.

                        His last public appearance was at the Chinese women's team's Olympic game against the Czech Republic on Aug. 17.

                        Mu is survived by his wife Wang Zhuanhong and two adult children.
                        Mu was one of the first Chinese giants appeared in Chinese national basketball team. He had played for the national basketball team for 14 years. As a member of Bayi Basketball Team, Mu still held the highest score of 80 points in a game, and beat the 1978 NBA champion Washington Bullets twice in April, 1979. Mu retired as a player in 1987, and as a coach in 2000.
                        "Mu was the only super center in Asia during his player career and he developed a classic Chinese playing style which is still used by Yao Ming," said Xu Jicheng, the BOCOG's deputy media director and the executive deputy director of the Main Press Center for the ongoing Paralympic Games.

                        Xu, a former hoopster who is also the best known basketball commentator in China, said Mu "read the game better" than Yao Ming, but the younger generation of Chinese centers including Yao, Wang Zhizhi and Menk Bateer are "more athletic and physically stronger".

                              These Dramas are very enjoyable to watch. They offer a lot of action and drama, which makes them extremely exciting.
