  • Long Live Chairman Yao

Major events/results since Yao Ming became president of CBA in February 2017:

    FIBA/International

    1) China won 4 gold medals at the 2018 Asian Games. All 4 teams (men, women, 5x5, 3x3) went undefeated.

    2) Red/Blue format for the Chinese men's NT. Red team won the 2018 Asian Games, Blue team went 5th in the 2017 Asian Cup.
Red team finished 7-2 including Asian Games and qualifying games.
Blue team finished 7-4 including Asian Cup and qualifying games.
Of the 6 losses, only 1 game (Blue vs. Australia) wasn't close in the 4th quarter. In the other 5 games, China stayed competitive until the last minute or overtime.

    3) In addition to Red/Blue teams, the national program also includes a "C" team, or developmental squad. There's also a developmental squad for women. (Not mentioned are the U17/U18 and U15/U16 teams as well as some 3x3 teams.)

    4) Instead of forcing players to join the NTs ("Wang Zhizhi the traitor went AWOL!") Yao Ming insists on the word "invite" to stress players' rights. Players don't need to join NTs if they don't want to. For example, this summer Guo Ailun did not join the NT until September, right before the Lebanon game. Yi Jianlian did not join the team at all even though he's available.

    5) To encourage clubs to release players to the NT, the NT and its sponsors will cover all expenses including insurance. Zhao Jiwei was injured this summer playing for the NT, and his medical fees will be covered by the national program.

    6) China also won hosting rights for 2019 World Cup over the Philippines.

    WCBA

    1) Expansion # of WCBA teams from 12 in 2016-17 to 14 in 2017-18, and to 18 in 2018-19. (As a direct result, Taiwanese players in WCBA have increased from 5 to a record-12+ this upcoming season, and looks like Taiwan's WSBL will fold soon.)

    2) Turning the CUBA university league into WCBA's developmental league by encouraging top schools to sign affiliation contracts with WCBA clubs. This way, junior professional players are able to receive an education, while non-scholarship student-athletes have a chance to turn pro.

Since Yao Ming took over, the following universities have signed affiliation contracts with WCBA clubs: Peking University (Xinjiang), Tsinghua University (Shaanxi), Beijing Normal University (Sichuan) and Tianjin University of Finance and Economics (Shanxi).

    CBA/NBL

    1) Expanding playoffs from 8 teams in 2016-17 to 10 teams in 2017-18, to a reported 12 teams in 2018-19.

    2) Make sure that some games are held every day instead of all games being held on the same days as was the case.

    3) Turning the CBA new player draft (only college students and Taiwan/Hong Kong players are eligible) into an actual event which are attended by teams and players.

    4) Inviting college standouts from the CUBA university league to the All-Star Game where they compete against CBA players.

    5) Turning the junior league to CBA D-league where older players and players recovering from injuries are able to join. During the first season (2017-18), the D-league features 15 teams, including the Chinese U16 national team as a special participant. Clubs with insufficient number of junior players combined their players to join this league. (Imports are also allowed but I'm not sure if any played.)

    6) Turning the Yangtze Delta Invitational, an annual summer invitational tournament into the CBA Summer League. In 2018, two teams from Taiwan SBL also played in the CBA Summer League (they went 0-6 against CBA teams).

    7) Introduce instant replays per NBA.

    8) Unlike the WCBA, Yao Ming has no plan to expand the CBA for 5 years. Therefore, the NBL will no longer serve as CBA's 2nd division whose champion is likely to get promoted to the CBA. Instead, Yao Ming wants the NBL to serve another purpose vis-a-vis CBA D-league, to serve as a bridge between CUBA and other amateur players and the CBA. College graduates who were not picked in the CBA draft can enter the NBL, and if they perform well, are able to reenter the CBA draft. Meanwhile, players who cannot stick in the CBA can continue their careers in the NBL.

Things Yao Ming is working on:

    1) Destroy the Army teams in both CBA and WCBA. The Army is the biggest stumbling block to professional basketball because their teams are unable to hire imports. Yao Ming has managed to make the 2 WCBA army clubs Bayi and Shenbu combine in the upcoming season, but efforts to force them "turn pro" haven't been successful.

    2) Create professional referees. So far CBA has never had any professional referees, and CBA referees are almost all teachers/coaches from "sport schools". They receive the lowest pay while receiving the most flak from fans, but they also suck and have no incentive to improve. Yao Ming's idea is to create a CBA Company with each team serving as a shareholder, so that referees are able to work full-time at this art. This idea is very risky and at this moment teams are unwilling to invest while referees cannot quit their other jobs easily without job security.

    3) Better transition college players into professional ranks especially for men. Women's CUBA have produced quite a few NT players, but men CUBA stars are still struggling to stick in the CBA. Lack of fundamentals and proper training/conditioning are the biggest issues facing college amateur players, but improving facilities and coaching in all 2000 CUBA schools/teams will take plenty of time.
