Boomers to tour Asia, Americas
Mon, 18 May 2009 4:08 PM
Basketball Australia has confirmed the 2009 Boomers program, which includes tours to China, Argentina and Brazil as well as the FIBA Oceania Championship against New Zealand.
Following a training camp at the Australian Institute of Sport (June 19-23) Australia will play two games against China in China before returning to Sydney for a second training camp (July 21-27).
The Boomers will then tour South America (July 27 – August 11) and play tournaments in Argentina and Brazil against the host nations and Uruguay.
After returning to Australia the team will camp in Sydney (August 18-22) in advance of the 2009 FIBA Oceania Championship against New Zealand, where victory ensures a Number 1 seeding at the 2010 FIBA World Championship in Turkey.
Basketball fans will get an opportunity to see the Boomers play on home soil when they take on New Zealand in Sydney on August 23 before the FIBA Oceania Championship moves to Wellington on August 25. The Boomers then depart for Kunshan, China, to contest the Boris Stankovic Cup against Turkey, Angola and the host nation.
New Boomers Head Coach Brett Brown is enthusiastic about the Boomers’ 2009 campaign.
“We have scheduled games against world class competition that will help the Boomers on our journey toward the 2010 World Championship,” Brown said.
“Argentina is ranked number 1 in the world, China is ranked tenth, Angola is twelfth, Turkey is thirteenth, New Zealand is fourteenth and Brazil is sixteenth; that’s six nations in the top twenty that we’ll face.”
Basketball Australia passed on participation in the prestigious 2009 NBA Las Vegas Summer League due to a large contingent of its top line players being unavailable.
“Because of injury, players being out of contract, and uncertainty with the upcoming NBA Draft, we were unable to secure the players necessary to responsibly justify the cost and benefits of playing in the NBA Summer League,” Basketball Australia Chief Executive Larry Sengstock said.
“We anticipate that a number of the athletes we were thinking about taking to the NBA Summer League will already be there, which is a good situation to be in, and although it was difficult to withdraw, for many reasons we felt that it was the appropriate thing to do.
“We will certainly consider this event next year, as part of our 2010 World Championship preparation.”
Basketball Australia will announce the 2009 Boomers Squad on Tuesday May 19.
Australia is currently ranked ninth in the world in men’s basketball.

No offense to the preparation of our neighbours across the Tasman (Kiwis) but I think we Aussies have a better preparation schedule but who knows our little brothers might give us a surprise and beat us.
