There was FIBA Asia champions cup for the middle east and there is also a tournament for East Asia where china korea and others participate. The tournament for East Asia is significantly weaker compared to the champions cup. Iran made their appearance in the east asia tournament and beat all teams easily including Chinese team. While East Asian teams does not participate in champions cup. Philippines participated in both. Sending Smart Gilas Pilipinas in both tournaments.

Smart Gilas participated in Champions Cup and reached semi-finals bowing to Iran(with importS) by a close margin. This same Smart Gilas was demolished in the PBA by more than 30 points by Ginebra in the PBA playoffs, who was not even performing well. Ginebra only had one import who is a 6'4 center. A PBA team in any FIBA sanctioned event will never happen. Eligibility issues will always cripple any PBA team as almost half of each team's roster is made up of half-bloods who never got their passports before turning 16 years old. And PBa only allows each team to parade one import.

Initially, I thought the we just needed to improve the Champions Cup. It was a good regular tournament, but it's intent was diluted as national teams were disguised as club teams just to they could use the tournament as a tune-up. Then the ABL came, which I thought would somehow work with the PBA and other leagues to form a super league.

Football is still number one in Asia (in the world, for that matter). However, if enough commercial backing is found, it could come true.

      • Look into this link and compare how many times did you philipines get into the semi finals in the modern basketball championships. I have been so curious why there are so MANY BRAGGERS from philipines. Those Chinese people are still so humble to say CBA is the best league unlike philipines.

Thinking of being first league at least at the time when you are close to championships.

In the leagues, all other leagues have strong foreign players, not just philipines. Asia Championships are not able to tell everything, but it is the only thing that can tell us something!!!

            • 1. CBA. The only Chinese league that is relevant. Let's face it, the Chinese football league is deplorable and laughable and full of corruption and is the total opposite of their basketball league, which produced a number of Chinese players which played in the NBA, and those who has aspirations to get to the NBA someday, and springboards for american players to the big time leagues and a destination for NBA has-beens.

              2. PBA. Oldest in Asia, super strong following and passionate fans, stable and a good destination for quality imports. Has a reputation for high quality of living among the american imports. Teams dont scrimp and players are always paid on time. Quality of play is at par with the best of Asia. those who think that it isnt is a moron and dont know basketball.

              3. KBL. Corporate backers are household names, and the team, on the surface, looks like they are financially stable. Quality of play is among the best in Asia. The only thing holding the league back is that, basketball, is not the most popular spectator sports in Korea, and always take a backseat from football and baseball.

              4. CTBA. a notch below the the top 3. but still good. Chinese Taipei always has a good basketball tradition and their teams are always competitive. But they are still relatively new at the highest level but they are getting there.

              5. Iran Super League - Players are among the best in the Asia. So it's not surprising if their league is strong, but actually, it is still developing. Iran coach commented during the last FIBA Asia Championships in Manila that he wish Iran has similar facilities like MOA. So it's safe to assume they just play in some cramped out gymnasium with a couple thousand fans in the stands. and Iran's favorite sports is still football. so maybe basketball gets only fringe pieces of the pie.

                • CBA is hands down the best right now...
But I like watching PBA too, PBA should have three conferences based like this:

                  1) All filipino
                  2) 1 import (can be both height and no height restrictions depending on teams)
                  3) 2 imports (unlimited height)

1st conference is to help develop local talent.

3rd conference is to let the Philippine players play their true positions based on their height. (a 6'6 guy should now play SF instead of C).
Also, this technically would be the highest level of basketball play.

2nd conference is mixture of both, you could impose height restrictions to make it an "exciting" conference.
