  • biggest upsets in asian basketball history

what do you thinks are the biggest upsets in asian basketball competition or by any asian team in international competitions?

to name a few (no particular order):

2006: lebanon beats france and venezuela at WBC

1985: RP beats USA in jones cup

2002: korea beats china in AG

1997: korea beats china in asian championships

for that matter, any asian team which beats china 'A' is an upset

nah, not the dream team, ofcourse! hehehe

it was a team, if i'm not mistaken, made up of future nba players..

yup, it was rookie team. but they dominated other teams in that jones cup that they were unbeatable. until they played with the RP team (the same RP team that won the asian championships that year)

well, let's see this coming tokushima...

RP is the underdog in this tournament (2nd to the last in FIBA rank among participating asian teams).

every win by RP (except against indonesia) should be an upset..

Two notable names I remember from that American team composed of collegiate players were future NBA players center Joe Wolf (Denver) and swingman Harold Pressley (Sacramento). Wolf was guarded by Dennis Still while Pressley tried to engage the likes of Chip Engelland and Allan Caidic in a shootout!

1982 - The Philippines beats China in front of a big crowd at the Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City to recapture the ABC Youth Championship (now known as the FIBA-Asia Junior Championship).

Game hero Alfie Almario was personally congratulated by Philippine First Lady Imelda Romualdez-Marcos who was in the audience.

The Philippines lost the crown to China two years ago in Bangkok after winning all the tournaments editions since 1970. Sadly, the country has since failed to win this championship again.

winning against france is an upset but i dont think lebanon winning against venezuala is an upset cuz i think venezuala was 1 of the weakest teams at the WBC last year....their level was worse than lebanon and lebanon even beat them in a friendly game 2 weeks before this actual game so i think lebanon is a better team than venezuala or atleast was last year i heard venezuala changed their team this year since their very old(average age 28)and i dont know anything about these young players but i think they are even worse since its a rebuilding process.........

In 1985, an even bigger victory came courtesy of the William Jones Cup in Taiwan. Ranked 4th overall, the San Miguel team wasn't expected to do well, especially since the Americans were represented by solid NCAA Division I players like Harold Pressley, Joe Wolf, Kenny Gattison, Kevin Henderson, Jay Bilas and Tommy Amaker and coached by Purdue's Gene Keady. Gene Keady was actually fresh from being awarded 1984 NCAA national coach of the year and Big 10 Coach of the year. He was assisted on the bench by Bruce Webber his assistant at Purdue that would later become a decorated coach himself. But Jacobs' boys pulled off one surprise after another as Moore worked like a horse, Engelland was at his pinpoint accuracy best, Calma was at his prime handling the court generalship role, and the tandem of Samboy Lim and Allan Caidic doing wonders both inside and outside. In the finals, the SMB team found itself to be in a dilemma, as center Dennis Still was hobbled by a bum knee while Jeff Moore encountered some back problems. But showing true guts and courage, the two players overcame the odds, and, with Engelland sniping away from the outside with 42 points and Lim, Caidic and Franz Pumaren doing equal damage from the arc, the SMB team won against the Americans in OT, 108-100. Tommy Amaker didn't know what hit him - he was astonished how Calma outran and outfoxed him all throughout the game. It came to a point when the foreign press described Calma as the "point guard whiz" from the Philippines while being astonished by Samboy Lim's high-flying and daredevil ways.
