Philippines coast guards need to learn the right approach in dealing with confrontations; how to make money (smart) instead of killing people (stupid and cruel)

CHINESE authorities are investigating claims that unidentified North Koreans hijacked a Chinese fishing boat, kidnapping 16 sailors and demanding a ransom, local media and an official says.

Armed North Koreans on May 6 hijacked the boat and escorted it towards North Korea while it was sailing in waters around 70 kilometres from North Korea's western coast, reports and the boat's owner Yu Xuejun said.

"The crew were taken away by a North Korean patrol boat after an armed hijacking," Yu said, adding that the kidnappers had contacted him to demand a ransom of 600,000 yuan ($A100,300).

"We are currently investigating (the boat owner's claims)," a section chief for the state border detachment, which is responsible for border security in the port city of Dalian, surnamed Zhao, said.

The Southern Metropolis Daily said the Chinese embassy in North Korea told Yu it was "dealing with the matter".

Yu was not certain of the kidnappers' identity, but said he suspected they were associated with North Korea's army.

Yu claimed to have been in contact with the 16 crew members as recently as Saturday, and said he believed they were in good health, but added that he was "worried that the North Koreans could abuse our sailors".

He had reported the incident to Chinese authorities, he said, but later posted details of the hijacking on the internet out of frustration over an apparent lack of official action.

"It has almost been two weeks, but I haven't seen any results," he said.

The reported incident comes a year after the return of 29 fishermen also kidnapped by unidentified North Koreans who had demanded a 1.2 million yuan ransom.

The fishermen were returned without ransom after the foreign ministry said it had contacted North Korea in an effort to resolve the case, the state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

Tensions between North Korea and China, seen as its sole major ally, have been high in recent months after North Korea carried out a nuclear test in February, a move Beijing said it "firmly opposed".

The Global Times newspaper last year quoted Dalian residents as saying North Korean coastguards had in the past captured fishing boats and stolen fuel and other items on board.

Declining fishing stocks in often heavily polluted coastal waters have pushed Chinese fishermen further afield in recent years, prompting disputes with neighbouring countries.

Calls to Dalian's city government, and the local maritime safety bureau went unanswered on Sunday.

Taiwanese people should know their territory
    actually the problem is basic
if a complete stranger or a burglar trespasses your house, what would you do, have a chat like lil kids or shoot him?

I've asked Rik to close the thread that I made due to emotions running high between Filipino and Taiwanese members. And here goes someone else making a thread and bringing it up again.

Sinno, what has your STATE-run, PROPAGANDA-filled, nutjob media been telling you and the poor souls that happen to be their audience?

Fact is, the Taiwanese fishermen tried to ram the coast guard boat (which happens to be 30meters) and that's why they tried to disable the damn fishing boat by shooting the damn engine room.

I can't wait for the results of the IMPARTIAL probe by the Philippine investigators. The Taiwanese investigators never got hold of all the evidence and yet they came to a conclusion that the coast guard's intention was to kill. It really shows how much of nutcases they care.

LOL..But i have a message for the Taiwanese Government, especially to their President, don't play politics on the life of people. Killing the taiwanese fisherman is subject to investigation and people at fault should be punished..but President Ma playing politics to one dead fisherman is as stupid and cruel as the killers of the fisherman.

Nice suggestion you have right there. Maybe we should covertly hire these NK pirates to patrol our maritime borders including our EEZs. Yeah, we could hit 3 birds with one stone with this. Reinforce border security, the Philippine government won't be accused of involvement in a heated encounter if the scenario arises, and more importantly, a fair share of the booty.

Looks like Taiwan just gave us more justification:

Taipei releases satellite record, claims fishing boat not in PHL waters

TAIPEI - Taiwan on Tuesday released a satellite record of the route of a fishing boat fired on by Philippine coastguards, flatly rejecting Manila's allegations that the boat intruded into Philippine waters.

The killing of crew member Hung Shih-cheng, 65, sparked outrage in Taiwan, which has announced a series of economic sanctions against the Philippines.

Taiwan's Fisheries Agency said the voyage data recorder from the fishing boat showed it was not in Philippine waters when it came under fire on May 9.

"The satellite records indicated that the Guang Ta Hsin 28 had been fishing within Taiwan's exclusive economic zone throughout," the agency's deputy chief Tsay Tzu-yaw told AFP.

The satellite record showed that the ship was positioned at 122 degrees and 55 minutes east and 19 degrees and 59 minutes north when it was attacked at 10:12 am. The economic zones claimed by each country overlap.

"Since the Philippine authorities repeatedly alleged that the fishing boat had intruded into their waters, then why not make public the video records they claim they have taken from the coastguard boat?" Tsay said.

The Philippines said Monday it would make "coordinated efforts" with Taiwan to look into the incident.

Its coastguards claimed that the fishing boat intruded into Philippine waters and tried to ram their vessel, forcing them to to open fire.

Taiwan's President Ma Ying-jeou has termed the killing "cold-blooded murder" based on an initial inquiry by Taiwan, which showed that the boat had more than 50 bullet holes and showed no signs of ramming.

The incident has sharply raised tensions between Taipei and Manila, sparking concern from Washington.

Justice Secretary Leila de Lima said Monday a National Bureau of Investigation team would fly to Taiwan to examine the fishing boat and interview survivors.

De Lima said the Taiwanese investigators would be given access to their evidence, including statements from the coastguard.

President Benigno Aquino has personally apologized for the incident but Taiwan has rejected his apology and announced sanctions.

These include a ban on the hiring of new workers from the Philippines, recalling its envoy and staging a naval drill in waters off the northern Philippines.

Taipei has repeatedly pressed Manila to issue a formal government apology, to compensate the fisherman's family and to apprehend the killer.

Philippine officials say the issue of a formal apology is complicated by the fact that Manila officially recognizes Beijing over Taipei. — Agence France-Presse

Plot that location into the map below and you will see that Balintang Channel, where the incident occured, is nowhere near the Taiwan EEZ:

              can I reply?

whoa the thread is still open!

and yeah, it wasn't the smartest thing to do, but at the same time it is sending a strong message to not intrude into a nation's territory or an territory that is currently being contested by several parties.

my biggest concern though is seriously fucking 51+ bullets were fired and only one hit? that is some horrible marksmanship right there.

also lets not pretend like it doesnt happen, we all know Chinese fishing boats (mainland at least, can i safely assume taiwan is the same?) like to ram other boats (ahem japanese coast guard, korean coast guard) in their angst to try and escape. its happened countless times.

let me put it in simple terms, if i was a cowboy rancher and had a heated dispute with another rancher nearby over territory, i wouldn't go int heir until some higher court settles it. if he/she steps into that territory i consider is mine (even though it may not be, hence a contested/disputed area) and i challenge them to it by saying get out of here, but that said rancher runs away while to endanger me in anyway in a disputed area, damn straight im going to fire back and shoot (with more accuracy though). i wouldnt expect any less form me, and if the tables were turned i wouldn't expect any less from the other as well.

2nd kidnap? Seriously...if mainland China had the balls (not its people but the government) they would have already turned their back against NK already. hell plenty of chinese i communicate w on a daily basis are sick and tired of NK.

as my friend (during the china vs holland soccer match which we all saw at worker's stadium!) said "you know i thought we (China) were buying a nice Siberian-Huskie (NK) but instead we overlooked in our rush to defend ourselves and isntead bought a wolf (meaning NK is not friendly to anyone, even its master China)

i bought him a nice bottle of german beer afterwards, courtesy of open free market :-)
