    • Azkals just need to play effective football.. no need for fancy footworks and sneaky attacks... thats how Spain won the World Cup... their rivals wasted opponents by winning 4-0 or 3-0 but Spain average 1 goal a game during World Cup and most of the results from the group stage to the final (with the exception of the opening upset by Switzerland and the 2-0 victory over one of the former colonies) are 1-0.. not because they're struggling but simply because they're playing effective football..

It will take years before football popularity reach its peak in the country especially when showbiz and politics keep interfering with the players or the organization.. for now, since we already some Filipinos in the reserve or lower leagues in Europe.. I just want to see a Pinoy (I don't care if he's half-Filipino) playing in the "First Team" of one of the teams in either English Premier League, Spanish La Liga, German Bundes Liga or Italia's Serie A...

Not all pinoys are having the privilege of playing football. Most of them came from the moneyed and rich families. Unlike basketball, everybody can play it. Whether if you're rich or poor. This game should be promoted correctly.

I don't agree with you on that one... the last World Cup said it all.. it was held in a continent where pretty much 90% of the population are poorer than Filipinos.. in that 90%, more than half (if not all) are far better in football than our national team... in the Philippines, the regions (Iloilo, Negros provinces) where football is no. 1 is not even that rich but they love football.. everyone can play it.. rich and poor.. thats why football is way bigger than basketball worldwide because you don't need to build basketball courts.. a soccer field as big as a tennis court is good enough to play football... different surfaces (sand, grass, dirt, concrete, wood) are playable for football...

In the Philippines, the weather is one thing and the lack of sponsorship.. their is also the culture of impatience... in football, goals takes ages to come and sometimes, it may never come... Filipinos love to see instant score.. they want points right away.. the more points the better.. thats where basketball comes in...

You got it all wrong here.. The better football players from the youth are those in the poor class.. A lot of them don't go to the next level because they have little/no opportunity..
Philippines is in National Team transition mode.

                  AMEN BROTHER!

That's why football is by far the biggest sport in the world. It is the ULTIMATE POOR MAN's sport. All you need is a some "round" object and "something" to act as goal post. However, basketball you still need a bouncy ball and a ring that is to hang up. Football's aspect as the most simple game is the reason why it is so loved in so many parts of the world. I have read the autobiography of Pele and he loves mentioning when he was young, him and the lads down the streets never had an actual football when they were young and would tie up a heap of rags and use it as their ball. Their "goal post" were some stones.

Don't get me wrong, I still love my basketball but I also love my football.

I believe that basketball has always propered in the Philippines because of it's history. Since Philippines had a wonderful success in the past obviously companies would sponsor teams. Due to the financial support, the sport kept on prospering up to this day.

I can imagine Filipinos slowly becoming lovers of the World Game if they first fall in love with "street football". Basically, it's indoor football (5 a side) but outdoor. Filipinos already have the basketball court, it's only a matter of time until they realise that they can also use it to play 5 a side football. In addition, you don't have to play "street football" in the basketball court. Obviously, from the name you can play that style of game in the streets. However, one must not mistake "street football" as "fight ball". Playing "street football" but the Latin American way (the way that the Brazilians and other Latin Americans play this football style) is all about flair, individuality, creativity, imagination and most importantly expression. In some countries the meaning of "street football" means to turn the "Beautiful Game" into "Fight Ball" where the strong survives and the victors are those who conquer based on brutality, physical strength, sledging (trash talking) and other means of intimidation.

I would say that Spain played "stylish football". Here's a great article by Australia's football analyst and former EPL player: Craig Foster. It's an article on who Australia should play the World Game the same way that Spain (well really it's Barcelona's style which has been upgraded from the 1970s Dutch Total Football) plays.

I love both football and basketball.. get to represent my schools back in the days...

Anyway, I played the indoor soccer (in a basketball court), the beach soccer, the futsal (the proper "street" soccer IMO), the "tennis court" football, and of course, football.. its fun.. now I felt really old thinking about those days...

That's what I'm trying to say. The underprivileged youth wasn't given a chance to strut their wares.

The members of Team Pilipinas Futsal are from Tondo, Manila. At least they were given a chance to play. Calling the attention of PFF! Train these kids!
