  • 2014 World Cup goal of national team
By Rainier Allan Ronda (The Philippine Star) Updated December 15, 2010 12:00 AM
MANILA, Philippines - The main “goal” is to have the Philippine flag join the parade of colors of the great nations of the globe in the next World Cup in Brazil in 2014.
Dan Palami, young businessman and sports patron who is playing the role as “very active” team manager of the country’s football team, aired confidence that with the proper training and support, the Philippines could vie in international football qualifiers and perform well enough to gain a slot in the next World Cup.
Palami, sans fanfare, had led a drive launched quietly last year to find promising football talents throughout the country to make up a rough pool from which to select members of the football team that has now been called “The Azkals”.
“We had enough unappreciated young football talent from which we formed a team that we are slowly but surely developing into a World Cup-class team,” Palami said in a recent interview before leaving for Hanoi, Vietnam where the Philippines put up a strong showing at the ASEAN Suzuki Cup, one of a long list of tournament qualifiers for the Brazil World Cup.
Palami declined to comment on the current controversy brewing in the local football scene as heads of try to claim credit for the recent string of successes of the football team, saying he preferred to focus on motivating the team to work harder, and train for future battles on the football pitch.
He admitted that with the current lack of a nationwide
program in schools, the task of spotting potential football talents was arduous and limited to the few football teams of some exclusive schools in Metro Manila and in certain provinces.
He noted that the current pool of 30 team members has many “Fil-foreigns” or Filipino-British or Fil-European youths who nurtured their love for and talent in football in soccer-crazy Europe.
The Philippines’ “Azkal” team held their own in the initial AFF tournaments, with triumphs in the last qualifying games in Vientiane, Laos allowing the team to qualify in Hanoi.
The Azkals finished second to host Laos in the elimination tournament of the Asean Football Federation (AFF) Suzuki Cup Asean Championship in Vientiane last October, only trailing Laos on goal difference to qualify for the ongoing finals in Hanoi this month.
They faced Asean football powerhouses, Myanmar, host Vietnam and Singapore.

      • Exactly!
I love my football as much as I love my basketball and I definitely know that the Philippines is far from ever reaching the World Cup.
The Philippines isn't even in the mid-tier level of Asian teams such as Uzbekistan, Qatar, Indonesia ... etc.
I can see Philippines growing but as eindhow let's just go one step at a time. This is football where the whole world plays not like basketball where it's only 3/4 of the world.

        • So after the semis against Indonesia, no matter the result we'll be in the 140s. Correct me if I'm wrong.

              • Coach Simon says he wants the team to be 110% ready! read the article here

I'm quite scared of the match tomorrow, seeing that the Indonesia proclaimed that they have solved the McMemeny enigma and saying that they're prepared what ever counter attacks we are making. I do hope coach and rest of the dawgs have something in their sleeves.

Of course they will be prepared! But don't count the Azkals out as they have also prepared for the match..

Here's what I'm assuming the Indonesians would do: notice that RP's defense is compact to the center, leaving the wings full of space.. To break the compactness, they will go to the wings often to create space.. Crosses will fly from left to right and then will test our CBs..

The defense will have a long night tomorrow.. Let's hope and pray for the best for our boys, the Azkals..

i saw how Myanmar had attempted to do that against us but they were overpowered by our "drayber ng bus" Etheridge and his "kundoktors" Borromeo, Gier and Jonsson. They're also keen on neutralizing the Younghusband brothers, esp. James due to his magnificent ways to create from dead ball situations.

Im hoping that Araneta would finally break-in the scoring table along with James Younghusband.

It's safe to say that in terms of quality, Indonesia is the better side.. So maybe, just maybe, their attacks might be more dangerous than that of Myanmars..

Add Chieffy Caligdong to that.. He's not in his groove since the qualifiers.. Injuries..>.<

                        • Malaysia just creamed Vietnam, 2 - 0, well i was also expecting that 'cause Vietnam lost most of their stars against Singapore. I can't wait for tomorrow, 1st day of simbang gabi and also the 1st day of Semifinal series of Philippines and Indonesia.

I was also expecting we'd hit the 140's but the wins and the goals wasn't enough. We'll get there slowly, just be patient unlike those arrogant know-it-all in this forum
