From where exactly did this trope of soccer needing a wide football field and specialized shoes to play come from, anyway?

Personally, I think football shoes are more expensive, specialized, or rare than, say, basketball shoes.

Field of play should not really be a problem, though. It's as easy as deciding on two end points as goal lines, whether on the streets or on a basketball court. What do they call football when it's played on the latter? Futsal.
