Compare this to other teams we'll be seeing in the first round who has been sending their squads in international tournaments since year 2000.

Weird. It seems that there are two Wikipedia pages for the WC qualifiers. I was referring to this one:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2014_FI...ification_(AFC)

I don't know if this is the format they'll use but the best we can hope for is to be drawn with a weaker team in the first round. These are the possibilities:

    Malaysia
    Afghanistan
    Cambodia
    Nepal
    Bangladesh
    Sri Lanka
    Vietnam
    Mongolia
    Pakistan
    Palestine
    Timor-Leste
    Macau
    Chinese Taipei
    Myanmar
    Laos
Hope we won't get drawn with Malaysia, Afghanistan or Vietnam for obvious reasons.
I would prefer them to breeze past their first round counterparts, rather than having difficulties at first.

Didn't consider the part that I bolded. Thanks for the heads-up.

The safest opponent we can have is Timor Leste considering we clobbered them 5-0 in the Suzuki Cup. Back then, we weren't much of an offensive team under McMenemy's bus-like defensive system.

The weird part is that Malaysia is in this group even though they outclassed Indonesia in the Suzuki Cup finals.

Let's hope we continue to get better with all these new recruits. Right now, we should also be thinking about creating our own amateur or, if we're keen, our own professional league.

What do you think is the reason ASEAN nations have a hard time advancing beyond the first round? Surely, it can't be height.
i don't know much about our local leagues and leagues in the region for that matter... but in the top European leagues, fitness isn't a concern because most of the internationals play club football where their only breaks are 3 months in between seasons and 2 weeks during Christmas season (England doesn't have a winter break for some reason).

all a manager of a European country has to do is "call-up" players good enough to play and trim down to squad to 23 men. as for the preparation itself, they agree to play exhibition matches (or friendlies) with other countries and schedule specific dates to train just days before the friendly. it's a chance for the manager to experiment with formations and lineups. normally, they do the same thing for qualifiers of major tournaments since the better countries are expected to dominate the weaker ones. everything changes when they're in danger of not qualifying or during the major tournament itself. they hold training camps and pick the best players available based on form and how he fits with the manager's tactics. all of this international activity happens while the season is on-going. it's only during the major tournaments like the European Championships and the World Cup when the club activity is put on hold... normally during the break between seasons.

personally, i think it just boils down to talent and experience. it's not just having a pro league... but having clubs in that pro league with a system similar to those in Europe. Japanese, South Korean, Australian, and some Arab clubs have youth teams and reserve teams. if a young player is good enough, why go to school when they can maximize their potential with a club? i'm not sure about our ASEAN neighbors, but it doesn't work that way here. a good young player has to be affiliated with a school just to play. the playing itself stops at the U23 level (college) unless a player plays in one of those amateur/semi-pro leagues like the UFL or gets a chance to play for the national team at a young age.

We are recently starting our youth program. I guess this is a sign of good things yet to come.

from what I know, your ranking in the tourney depends on how you rank in the previous edition. that's why we're even ranked lower than most of the team even if they're lower in the fifa rankings.

Yeah, another solid reason why you can't base your judgement on a team's strength according to its ranking.

On a different note, imagine how far we could've penetrated the Asian or even the world football scene if the PFF did its job properly way back in the 50s. Apparently, the mess that our sports federations in basketball (BAP) and football (PFF) have made the past years really placed us on the front seat to disaster. It's now time for these federations to do their job properly and cleanse our image in the international arena.

                • as for the WC qualifying draw, i would think there would be a pot A and pot B so as not to match up two higher-ranked countries... we will definitely draw either:

Malaysia - even their U23 team is capable of beating us
Afghanistan - have a several players with experience in lower tier German leagues
Cambodia - we parked the bus against them and this happened
Nepal - similar to Mongolia, but they have an experienced English coach
Bangladesh - we just beat them because their defense had no answer to Guirado
Sri Lanka - football isn't big there, but they did qualify for the Challenge Cup last time.
Vietnam - will likely beat us next time around
Mongolia - their only advantage is the climate at home.

He appreciated/recognized Ian Areneta's goal but not GUIRADO.

I don't know dude, look at indonesia, solid government backing of the sport yet it can't match up with power houses in AFC and can't even take home a AFF championship. I know they also have corruption in their federation but its not an excuse in 'cause the sport is every well developed.

                            • Malacañang invites Azkals for post-victory visit
                              03/26/2011 | 11:19 AM

While it admitted it still has no plans whether to mount a grand welcome for them, Malacañang invited the Philippine “Azkals" football team to visit the Palace following their rousing 3-0 victory over Bangladesh in the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Challenge Cup qualifying match Friday.

Presidential spokesman Edwin Lacierda also said the Palace joins the Filipino people in congratulating the football team on its victory at the Bogyoke Aung San Stadium in Yangon, Myanmar.

“We hope to see them, though we don’t know when they are returning to the country. They are more than welcome to visit the Guest House," Lacierda said on government-run dzRB radio.

He said his regret was that he was not able to see a live telecast of Friday’s match.

On Friday, Filipino-Spanish player Angel Guirado starred in the Azkals' 3-0 dismantling of Bangladesh.

The Philippines finished undefeated after consecutive draws with Myanmar (1-1) and fellow qualifier Palestine (0-0) – a 3-1 winner over the hosts – to enter the Last 8.

Other quarterfinalists were Group B qualifiers India and Turkmenistan, and the Maldives and Tajikistan (Group C).

Group D – which has 2010 AFC Challenge Cup champions North Korea, Nepal, Sri Lanka and the winner of the playoff match between Cambodia and Macau – will start their final qualifying matches on April 7.

The top two teams in Group D will earn the last two spots in the Last 8 of the biennial tournament.

But the next phase of the tournament for the first time means a tougher job for the Azkals, who are expected to arrive in Manila on Sunday. — LBG, GMA News

from your comments besides each countries, it seems that its only Bangladesh, Mongolia and Nepal that we have a good chance of beating?..that's your opinion and I beg to differ..i opined that we can beat any of these countries on any given day..much more if some potential players will will (cagara, De Guzman's, etc.)
