  • Earl Sonny Alvarado - a Puerto Rican?

Does anybody from Puerto Rico know the background of ex-Univ. of Texas standout and former Philippine Basketball Association power player Sonny Alvarado? Alvarado allegedly claimed his roots is from the Philippines only to be investigated by the immigration dept. as a fake Filipino. Él engañó a fanáticos filipinos del baloncesto.... Las autoridades divulgaron que Alvarado es un Puerto Rican. ¿Puede cualquier persona atestiguar a esto?

Trivia: Dec. 30, 1995: Sonny Alvarado posts 20 points and 14 rebounds to lead Texas to a 74-72 upset of No. 11 North Carolina before a CBS national television audience in Austin. UNC features a pair of future NBA stars in then-sophomores Vince Carter and Antawn Jamison.

The Philippine government did give Alvarado a chance to prove his roots. Unfortunately, it was him who did not take the opportunity. Probably for reasons that the Immigration department is corrupt, and he did not want to fall victim.

After playing significant numbers in the PBA, the Punisher was even voted to be included in the Philippine NT. Had he insisted and gave more time proving he's got Filipino blood, he could have been a definite shoo-in to the National Team. It's just that the locals were so indignant against the so-called Fil-foreigners, moreso the fake ones. But Alvarado's silence must have signified his guilt. Too bad for him.

I suppose Alvarado has both Filipino and Puerto Rican blood but he failed to prove so.

Earl "Sonny" Alvarado was drafted by Tanduay in the 1999 draft. He was claimed to a "fil-foreigner". He dominated the PF/C positions. He and Eric Menk led Tanduay to the Finals but lost in the championship. After a year or so Fil-Foreigners were being questioned about their roots and legality as Filipinos. During this time he was given a chance to prove his eligibility as a Filipino but the courts decided he was not a Filipino. This was the last that I heard of him. During this time numerous "Fil-Foreigners" were being deported. One of them was Asi Taulava (Current Philippine NT center). When he was deported worked to find proofs of his eligibility as a Filipino. About some time he was able to get back and was proven to be Filipino.

Had Earl Alvarado be a legitimate Filipino he would have likely to be in the Philippine NT together with his 1999 draft batchmates Danny Seigle and Asi Taulava.
