ARG - Peñarol win Argentinian National League title

MAR DEL PLATA (Liga Nacional de Basquet) - Peñarol Mar del Plata became Argentinian National League champions after seeing off Atenas de Córdoba 80-60 in Game 5 of the Finals on Tuesday.

Peñarol won the best-of-seven games series 4-1 to claim the championship for the second time in their history. They took their maiden title back in the 1993-1994 season.

The two time FIBA Americas League champions sealed the game in the third quarter against a tired-looking Atenas side.

Leo Gutierrez was selected as the Finals MVP and led his team with 23 points in Game 5. Atenas' Diego Lo Grippo was the high-scorer with an impressive 38 points.

The game was closely contested early on and the score was tied at 24 at the end of the first quarter.

The hosts then went on an 8-1 run early in the second period to create a bit of distance and were up 44-37 at halftime.

Facundo Campazzo had the hot hand to start the third period and that allowed Peñarol to stretch their advantage to 56-39.

Atenas then reeled off eight straight points to get within 59-47 heading into the final frame.

In the fourth quarter, Peñarol stayed consistent on the offensive end and held Atenas to just 13 points as fans began to celebrate at Polideportivo Islas Malvinas.

Penarol was just dominant this season, winning FIBA Americas, Interliga, and the LNB (a treble?). Kind of makes me wish they could play Barca just to see where they stand globally.

By the way, which are top players in this seasons LNB? Which players are highest paid in Argentinian basketball and what are biggest contracts?

        Thanks!
David Jackson is a natural scorer, with a lot of talent but a bit undersized to play the 2. He is a great shooter, goes through screens to find a good shot (like Ray Allen, Reggie, etc), and cant take it to the hoop, even when he has average athleticism. He struggles a little bit on defense, but he is so good on offense that he has been elected the best shooting guard for the past 2 seasons of the lnb (he only played for those 2 seasons here). He still has to prove to be a winner.

The best players are: Leo Gutierrez (probably the best player of all time in the LNB), Roman Gonzalez, Federico Kammerichs (best rebounder by far), Diego Lo Grippo, Martin Leiva... there are a lot more of good players, but that are the ones who came to my mind first.

Barcelona will win, obviously, but... i think Peñarol would make this a close game (lose by 10, 14, something like that). Here are my reasons: 1) Leo Gutierrez can score on EVERYONE. 2) They are full of defensive specialists, like Leiva, Mata or Campazzo. 3) Sergio Hernandez its a great coach.

I agree with these statements. I don't know why Gutierrez never caught on with a big team. When I've seen him play for the Argentina National Team, he has always been one of the smarter players on the court...even when Manu, Nocioni, and Hermann are with him. I should have spent the past decade in the NBA.

            Libertad Sunchales tour Asia

Libertad Sunchales opened their tour of Asia. The Argentinean outfit arrived in China and played two friendly games against the Jordanian selection.
The first game of the tour turned out success. Libertad shot down Jordan 78:65. Trailing by two points at the first intermission Libertad turned thing around in the next periods. Libertad came up strong in the fourth term and eked out a tough victory at the end. Ruben Wolkowyski (207-C-73) provided 17 points to lead Libertad. Sebastian Ginobili (190-G-72, agency: Interperformances) added 15 points, while Robert Battle (204-C-81, agency: Lanshire Group, college: Drexel) had 14 in the win.
Libertad and Jordan met again this time in the city of BengHu, China. This time Libertad were less successful. Jordan proved the strength and celebrated a 75:60 win. Robert Day (197-F-82, college: W.Oregon) finished with 15 points for Libertad. Sebastian Ginobili knocked down 11 points, while Ruben Wolkowyski accounted for 10 points in the loss. Robert Battle suffered an injury in the second quarter and had to leave the court.

Even as much as i like Leo, I think the reason he never played on the NBA its because of lack of athleticism.
He could be playing in Europe easily...

Flamengo has signed Kyle Lamonte and Pinheiro has signed Juan Pablo Figueroa. What can brazilian expect from these two players in your opinion?

Figueroa is probably the best PG in Argentina; although not a great scorer, he is not afraid to be the go-to man in clutch situations, be it by shooting or driving. But his best feature is individual defense, that is what got him NT consideration, he is very aggressive and good at that.

Lamonte: Great scorer. He can put up points in a lot of ways, but he´s at his best in the mid range game, either pulling up for a jumper, a floater or slashing to the basket. He gets a lot of offense in isolation sets. Draws a lot of fouls. Excelent in Fast Break. Good shooter, but a little inconsistent from three. A little undersized for a shooting guard. Not the best defender.

Figueroa has already been described above, but I agree he was probably the best point guard in the LNB. Dont expect a lot on offense (6 to 8 ppg), even when he is a good shooter, but prepare to see one of the best perimeter defenders of south america, if not the best. Very good passer and great basketball IQ. He´s young but already a leader and a winner.
