Since the Copa Argentina (preseason tournament involving all 16 LNB teams and 14 second division clubs) is just underway, i'll be posting these LNB rosters before the league begins on early October. So, many notable transfers this offseason:

-Leonardo Gutiérrez left champion Atenas, and joined finalist Peñarol... a club with fans that have always hated his guts.

-Román González, then, left Peñarol for Quimsa.

-Libertad hired Rubén Wolkowyski, who played last season in Uruguay and Puerto Rico, and hasn't played LNB since 2002.

-Obras got lucky: picked up Juan Espil and Gaby Fernández from Boca's financial issues; and also got Bruno Lábaque from Atenas, because he had to move to Buenos Aires.

-But Atenas replaced Lábaque with Juan Pablo Cantero, the NT PG coming from Sionista.

-But Sionista replaced Cantero with Luis Cequeira, another young PG with NT experience who comes from Regatas.

-La Unión pulled the biggest shock: the newly promoted team signed league MVP David Jackson, from finalists Peñarol.

Copa Argentina Final 4 will begin on Friday, in the Patagonian city of Trelew, Province of Chubut. The four qualified teams are Gimnasia, Peñarol, Sionista and Quimsa.

Weird note: Daaron Brown, import C for Quilmes, decided to leave the team (and the country) after getting mugged at gunpoint at his hotel lobby

in the final day, Gimnasia crushed Sionista 81-66; but the champions were Quimsa, despite losing to Peñarol 77-73 in overtime, since the three-way tiebreaker favored them.

In the Opening Game of the season, Atenas trashed Quimsa 83-61 (48-18 at the half). Surprising result since both teams are true favorites to the title, but also because Atenas was missing its starting center Kante.

Atenas pulled another major signing, maybe the best signing of all: Diego Lo Grippo, the PF who played in Spain for a few years now.

Well, let's update this with some action

Bruno Lábaque of Obras, leading the South

North Zone Standings: (some teams have been playing Liga Sudamericana games, so their standings aren't real)

                      1) Atenas (5-2) 12 points
                      2) Regatas (4-3) 11 points
                      3) Libertad (4-2) 10 points
                      4) La Unión (3-4) 10 points
                      5) Unión (3-3) 9 points
                      5) Quimsa (3-3) 9 points
                      7) Sionista (3-2) 8 points
                      8) Olímpico (0-6) 6 points

                      South Zone:

                      1) Obras (6-1) 13 points
                      2) Central (5-2) 12 points (the great surprise so far)
                      3) Peñarol (5-1) 11 points
                      4) Boca (4-3) 11 points
                      5) Quilmes (3-4) 10 points
                      6) Gimnasia (2-5) 9 points
                      7) Lanús (1-6) 8 points
                      8) Estudiantes (1-5) 7 points
                      -------------------------

Here you can see the top players in several stats categories.

And here you can see the stats of each player of every team.

                      ----------------------------
The most surprising player belongs to the most surprising team: Oscar Funes, SG of Central, is leading all scorers with 24.1 ppg. He also leads at efficiency rating and steals. The next top scorer is Luis Cequeira, PG of Sionista, whose 20.8 ppg are also unexpected, especially since he leads all passers at 4.5 apg.

The rebounding leaderboard shows Federico Kammerichs of Regatas on top, which is no surprise. The shock is his average of 15.4 boards, nearly doubling his closest competitor.

Odd: the efficiency ratings board has four Argentines at the top: Funes, Kammerichs, Cequeira and Rubén Wolkowyski. Andrés Pelussi, Gabriel Míkulas, Bruno Lábaque and Román González are also in the top 10.

another big name joins an LNB team: Obras Sanitarias of Buenos Aires replaced injured Cuban PF Lázaro Borrell with American-Spanish C Chuck Kornegay, who playerd for the Spanish NT in 2001 and had his last job in Uruguay.

Last night, Diego Osella became the first player to reach 1000 games in the LNB. He even scored a 2+1 on his first play of the game.

Since his debut for Atenas in 1988, he's played every LNB season except for a two year period in Varese (2002/2004) and half a season in Alicante (2000/2001).
