            heres an update

SAO PAULO (Liga de las Americas) - The FIBA Americas executive committee has confirmed the body wants to create a new tournament called the Liga de las Americas.

The idea is to create a tournament which groups for 16 teams in the region although the United States would not be represented by a NBA franchise.

Horacio Muratore, a FIBA Americas member and also the Argentinian Basketball Confederation president, told Brazilian newspaper Folha de Sao Paulo: "The representative of the United States will come from university basketball, the D-League or any other local league."

Eduardo Dagnino, general secretary of the South American Basketball Confederation (Consubasquet), added: "Teams from the United States, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Argentina and Brazil have already expressed their willingness to take part in the tournament.

"We need TV to take part too. We need a continental station, like ESPN or Fox."

Negotiations will take place in February in Las Vegas during the week of the NBA All-Star Game.

Hi everyone! I saw this thread and simply had to post xD

I'd love to see this idea become a reality, and it seems it will. But there are many obstacles that will have to be considered by whoever organizes this league:

-the calendar: Only Argentina and Brazil have year-round pro leagues. And the other countries' leagues simply don't match on their positions in ther calendar. This will have to be fixed somehow. Plus, many players play half a season in one country and half a season in another one, because of this thing.

-the travel: not only we're not nearly as rich as Europe, we even are a bigger continente with longer distances to cover and less flight frequencies between our cities.

-the schedule: many of our countries' leagues play 2 or 3 games a week.

-TV: I don't think signing with a continental network like ESPN or Fox is the best thing to do. They should try to sell the rights separatedly to each country. I mean, ¿how many people in Mexico would watch a game between a Puerto Rican team and an Argentinean team?

If these problems are overcome, this will be a great league (but please let the best clubs get in, ¡¡no franchises please!!); and the addition of NBDL or CBA teams would be simply spectacular, especially if they lose xD

It is, but it's only for South America and excludes good leagues like Puerto Rican BSN and Mexican LNBP.

I really like the idea of the Americas Tournament

it will be good, but it would be better if the guys from the PuertoRican league actually moved our tournament to the usual schedule other league have, you know, running the league from Oct-Nov to April-May.

The BSN directive plans for the the Americas Tournament is to send a team while were in the offseason. So, while the other teams like Uberlandia from Brazil, Trotamundos from Venezuela and others are already on their season, we will be playing them with a group of guys out of shape (not something I would like to see).

the calendar and the schedue are IMO the biggest problem.

the travel can be solved via sponsorship.

and I agree about the rights for broadcasting to be sold to each country separatedly

But there would be a problem with that. One of the reasons BSN has so many good players is that it is played in a time of the year when many players (mostly Americans and Puerto Ricans) have ended their season in Europe, Argentina, the USA or even Mexico. So, if they decide to move the tournamente to the northern winter, the league could lose many good players.

Venezuela has the same problem, because its leagues are played the same times as Puerto Ricans: the top league in the northern spring, and a weaker league in the northern fall (when this Americas League would be played). Mexican leagues have the opposite calendar distribution, so they would benefit.

                          It' such a mess

FIBA Americas has said that the idea is trying to play between October and December. Apperently, it will have the same format of the South American League:

-16 teams, divided in 4 groups.
-Each group is organized by one host team, and each team plays 3 games in consecutive days. Top 2 teams on each group qualify to quarterfinals.
-Quarters and semis are best-of-3 series (1-2)
                              -Finals are best-of-5 (2-2-1)

Not the best format possible (I don't like the idea of many teams not getting to play a single game at home, and just 3 matches; and 16 teams seem few for so many countries involved), but good enough to start and develop from there.

yeah, but let me explain a lil bit about PRican Basketball

our top players in the BSN are paid on a range of $90,000 to $150,000 for 2 and a half months of basketball. If we move our season to Oct-Nov to April-May we could move our salaries to the range of $350,000 - $550,000 which IMO could compete with some European Leagues and the LatinAmerican Leagues (solo supongo, pq en realidad no se los salarios en Argentina y Brazil aunk dudo que sean superiores a estos)

well, we will certainly lose the Joe Bunn's, Bobby Brannen's, Bob Lazor's, Desmond Farmer's, Daniel Santiago's, but I think we could keep Ayuso, Hatton, PJ Ramos, Carmona and with a lil bit (a lot) of luck Apodaca

                                well, I just suppose

                                maybe reality is other
