  • Australian-Filipino basketball coach in URUGUAY

Now this is what I call Globalisation of our beautiful game ...

    HereĀ“s the link

HereĀ“s a translation since it is in Spanish (note, I donĀ“t speak fluently ... yet but hereĀ“s a translation)

"Francis from Australia to Monte VI.

Francis in the photo with 4 boys from the 4th grade of Primary studied primary and secondary at Redfield College in Sydney, the school where Monte VI has an exchange program. He plans in the future to be a general primary teacher and a secondary teacher (Economics & Social Sciences).

HeĀ“ll be staying in Uruguay until December and is working in Monte VI as a student teacher in English. In addition, heĀ“ll be starting to have a basketball program that will hopefully be able to play against other schools. In Australia, Francis played basketball at a high level. His other interests include music where he plays the saxophone. Here is what he has to say ...

In my one week of stay in Uruguay, the teachers and the students of the school they have made me feel at home and in general the people of Montevideo.

When he (Francis) studied in Redfield College, Francis visited Spain as an exchange student where he studied at Colegio Gaztelueta in Bilbao. In his first days in Montevideo, he sees the Uruguayan culture as a mix of European and Latin America.

The school (Colegio Monte VI) thinks well of this Australian who is living in the University College "Montefaro". One of his (Francis) objectives during his stay is to know the country and hopefully during holy week visit the eastern side of Uruguay.

In the future, oin this website of Colegio Monte VI Francis will provide us with his accounts or impressions of the country, the school and the Uruguayans "

    Okay, IĀ“ll be honest ... thatĀ“s me

HereĀ“s the schoolĀ“s official website URL
El colegio Monte VI forma parte, junto al preescolar Our Kids y el colegio Los Pilares, de ASPROE (Asociación Promotora Educativa), sociedad civil sin fines de lucro

This is for some experience because IĀ“ll be studying to become a teacher next year and on top of that I am planning to be a high school basketball coach in Australia. In terms of basketball, my dream would be to coach basketball at the high school level in the US. That would be one hell of an experience. Hence, I am hoping to get a teaching placement in the USA after my 2 year study here in Australia (2008 & 2009).

For those who are unfamiliar with Uruguayans and their sociological history, most Uruguayans are of European descent (Spanish or Italian, sometimes German or French) because there are no or hardly any indians in Uruguay, thus youĀ“ll see in this photo Uruguayan kids with blonde hair.

Soccer is always first, but basketball has a solid second place.

ThatĀ“s true ... here in Uruguay basketball is firmly second ... though the national team has not had too much success recently the Uruguayans like the Argentinians would definitely prefer to play basketball after football ...
Thanks guys for the congrats ... I will do you all proud and attempt the impossible of making basketball more popular than football

Damn, I have returned back to Australia before Xmas because I can never miss out on a Filipino Xmas with my huge family. I can always miss a New Years with the family but a Filipinio Xmas with ALL THAT FOOOOOOOOD and even the very corny or cheezy family games

I think you are the only Filipino unless you go to the Ciudad Vieja or Puerto Mercado (both are in Montevideo) where you might bump into some Filipinos who are sailors and are just dropping by since their ship is anchored in the nearby port. But be careful because you might think that someone is Filipino but in reality thy might be from Peru or from Mexico because Uruguay is obtaining an increasing amount of immigrants from those countries because Uruguay is the third highest country in Latin America in terms of living standard, health and education (according to the United Nations) and ranked 46 in the world. Hence, many Mexicans and Peruvians are opting to head down south.

So why are you in Uruguay? Are you in Uruguay? Are you in Montevideo or Punta Del Este?

I one time heard of a Filipina teacher who was in Punta Del Este because she was teaching English. However, she was only teaching for a while and left before I arrived back in March 07.

So how are you finding Uruguay? It is very different from Philippines? The Spanish in Uruguay is very different from the Spanish from Spain or from Mexico. It is Spanish with an Italian accent just like the Argentinians since many of the Uruguayans are descendants from Italy. For me though the Argentinian have the best Spanish accent. Many of my Latino friends agree and of course they all voted that the Spanish accent from Spain was the worst. But of course, it is the "real" Spanish hence, I have no comment.

Are you finding the Uruguayans to be closed to not open to foreigners like yourself? If so, well reason being is that Uruguayans live in a country that does not have too many foreigners or immigrants. It is only now that there is a very slow increase from other Latin American countries. However, one thing I have noticed is that once you're introduced to a Uruguayan they open their arms nice and wide and immediately treat you like a friend.

Make sure you go and watch a football game there. On the 6th of March there is a HUGE game and a very important one. It is my favourite football team NACIONAL versus Brazilian giants Flamengo. It is a game of the inter continental tournament (Copa Libertadores). I am a fanatic of NACIONAL. I have a flag, a cap, two shirts, a mate ... you name it I have it!!! You will love it. My first football game I watch was between NACIONAL and Emelec (a football club from Ecuador) and the atmosphere, the level of football, the fans, the stadium was incredible.

Here's a taste of that awesome football experience.

Enjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube.

This is why I know follow football and why I am so passionate about NACIONAL because when you're with the "Barra Brava" (the fanatical fans) you feel their passion and once you start singing their songs you become absorbed into their mentality. Seriously, I would rather go to a football game between Nacional and arch rivals Penarol rather than Uruguay versus Brazil because of the enormous passion that these Uruguayans have for their club rather than for their country (well that is because the national team have excellent players but have internal problems)

The basketball league is quite entertainig. Though the crowds are not as large as in the Philippines the fans are very, VERY PASSIONATE!!! They bring the passion from the football stadiums to the 1,000 seated stadiums hence, the atmosphere is electrifying!!!
