Substitution in Argentina - Oct 6, 2010 (by Miguel Gonzalez)
The traditional Atenas, from Cordoba (Argentina) is out of the Americas League. The Argentinian side has not enough money to invest in the continental competition and decided to priorize the Argentian League and Argentinian Cup.

The Argentinian FA discussed the matter with FIBA Americas and Regatas Corrientes was invited to replace Atenas.

Three spots are still available for the 2010/11 Americas League. These teams must come from Chile, Dominican Republic and Uruguay.

The confirmed sides are: Capitanes de Arecibo (Puerto Rico), Cocodrilos (Venezuela), Espartanos Margarita (Venezuela), Flamengo (Brazil), Halcones Rojos (Mexico), Halcones Xalapa (Mexico), Juventud Sionista (Argentina), Mavort (Ecuador), Pearol Mar del Plata (Argentina), Pioneros (Mexico) Regatas Corrientes (Argentina), Toros (Mexico) and Universo (Brazil).

FIBA AMERICAS LEAGUE – Strong start for Regatas, Peñarol

MAR DEL PLATA (FIBA Americas League) - The day belonged to Argentina as both of the country's clubs in Group A of the FIBA Americas League began the new campaign on Thursday night with victories.

Regatas Corrientes scraped a 77-74 win over Toros de Nuevo Laredo of Mexico while two-time winners Peñarol, the hosts of the pool games, thrashed Espartanos of Venezuela 102-74 in the nightcap.

Toros led at the end of the first three quarters, including 63-58 with 10 minutes to go.

Regatas took command with a 14-3 run in the last frame.

They reeled off five consecutive points to knot the contest at 63-63 and then extended the advantage to 72-66.

Toros didn't go quietly, pulling to within one point with a minute to play after a three-ball by Wilfredo Pagan and a three-point play from Quentin Gonzalez.

But Regatas made their free-throws down the stretch and edged the encounter by three points.

Argentina international Federico Kammerichs poured in 16 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and swatted four shots for Regatas.

Ramzee Stanton also had 16 points while Rene Rougeau poured in the same amount for Toros.

        Regatas made 14 of 15 (93%) free-throws compared to Espartanos sinking just 12 of 19 (63%).

Regatas also won the battle of the boards, 42-34, though Rougeau couldn't have done much more in that regard for Toros.

He had nine rebounds, including six on the offensive glass.

Peñarol, whose coach is former Argentina national team boss Sergio Hernandez, brushed aside Espartanos 102-74.

Leo Gutiérrez remaining hot from long range.

Having established an Argentina Liga Nacional record by making 15 three-pointers over the weekend in a big win over Boca Juniors, Argentina international Gutiérrez drilled seven of 11 against Espartanos and finished with a game-high 27 points.

Regatas face Espartanos on Friday night while Peñarol square off against Toros.

Uruguayans Defensor trailed 68-58 but mounted a fourth-quarter comeback and had a chance to knot the game in the waning seconds but Sebastian Izaguirre was off target with a shot from the arc.

Uniceub finished 19 of 23 (83%) at the line and also buried 11 of 31 (35%) from long range.

Brazil international Alex Garcia, one of the top defensive players at the World Championship, missed all eight of his shots from long range for Uniceub.

So far Halcones and Peñarol looking like the best teams out there... Seems like nothing change has from last year. Also, lookout with Uniceub, they have a great core of national players (Guilherme, Nezinho, Alex, Lucas, Arthur, Alirio, Cipriano), although, not having any import player on their roster, will surely cost them against the best teams.

FIBA AMERICAS LEAGUE - Flamengo late show v Quimsa; Chileans Espanol beat Mavort

IBARRA (FIBA Americas League) - Flamengo Rio de Janeiro and Espanol de Talca clinched wins on the opening night of Group C action in the FIBA Americas League.

The event is being staged in Ibarra, Ecuador, and in the first game on Tuesday night, Flamengo edged Quimsa Santiago del Estero, 78-72.

Frederico Lima hit a go-ahead three-pointer inside the final minute for the Brazilian team.

The contest was close from beginning to end.

Quimsa's Julio Mazzaro scored to give the Argentina outfit a 70-66 lead with 2:08 remaining but Flamengo dug deep and got a three-ball from David Teague.

After Jonatan Treise missed for Quimsa, Lima drilled his important shot from the arc that put Flamengo in front.

Quimsa called a timeout and when play resumed, Mazzaro launched a shot from the three-point line but missed and Guilherme Teichmann grabbed the offensive rebound for Flamengo.

Teague then misfired but Quimsa failed to capitalize, with Mazzaro, who had 20 points, turning the ball over for the fifth time in the game just 18 seconds from the death.

Flamengo sank six free-throws in the last 16 seconds to ice the win.

Teague had 20 points and Brazil international Marcelinho Machado poured in 17 for Flamengo while Quimsa got a game-high 23 from power forward Diego Lo Grippo.

Group C hosts Mavort slumped to an 85-76 defeat to Espanol, who were led by the excellent Guillermo Araujo's 25 points.

Mavort got 14 first-half points from Blake Walker and went to half-time on top 38-37.

Araujo started the second half with a jumper and followed that with a three-ball before a lay-up from Samuel Bravo.

Franco Morales capped the early second-half run with a free-throw and Espanyol stayed in front the rest of the way.

They went in front by 14 in the fourth quarter but Mavort stayed within striking distance and pulled to within six in the last minute.

However, the Chilean team was too good on the night and claimed the victory.

On Wednesday, Espanol take on Quimsa and then Flamengo go up against Mavort.

The top two sides from Group C will advance to the next stage of the competition and join Regatas Corrientes and Penarol Mar del Plata from Group A and Group B sides Halcones Xalapa and Uniceub BRB.

FIBA AMERICAS LEAGUE – Flamengo, Quimsa advance to second round

IBARRA (FIBA Americas League) - Brazilians Flamengo and Argentinian outfit Quimsa Santiago del Estero both won on the last night of FIBA Americas League Group C to book second-round places in the competition.

The clubs have joined Argentina's Regatas Corrientes and Penarol Mar del Plata, Mexico's Halcones UV Xalapa and Brazil's Uniceub/BRB in the next phase.

The hot hand of Brazil international Marcelinho Machado fired Flamengo to a third straight win on Thursday.

The veteran sharpshooter drilled six three-pointers and had 35 points in an 85-66 thrashing of Chileans Espanol de Talca.

Trailing by three points at the end of the third quarter, Flamengo shifted into a higher gear and went to half-time in front, 42-32.

After closing the gap to just eight points by the end of the third, Espanol ran out steam and Flamengo pulled away for a 19-point triumph.

                        Flamengo out-rebounded their opponents, 48-38.

Group C hosts Mavort battled bravely in the second game, looking to avoid a third straight setback, but fell 75-65 as Quimsa improved to 2-1.

Mavort had every chance to win and went to the last quarter with a 55-54 advantage.

The home side’s wheels came off over the final 10 minutes, though, as Quimsa held it to just 10 points and clinched victory.

Dionisio Gomez dominated for Quimsa, making nine of his 13 shots inside the arc on his way to 20 points.

Diego Le Grippo, who also had 20 points for Quimsa, was eight of nine at the free-throw line and also buried a couple of three-pointers.

All three days of action were sold out in Ibarra.

Capitanes de Arecibo will host Group D, which tips off on January 18 in Puerto Rico.

Mexicans Halcones Rojos de Veracruz, Argentina's Juventud Sionista de Paraná and Venezuela's Cocodrilos de Caracas are also in the pool.
