  • Manute Bol Thread

I'm sure everyone remembers the great Manute Bol, one of the NBA's tallest players. But did you guys know he was a spokesman for Church's Fried Chicken? Check this page out. Hilarious.

He's been involved in a lot of stunts over the years, from playing hockey to boxing "Refridgerator" Perry to being a jockey, but it's just really funny that he'd endorse Church's Chicken.

    Also, what's up with this?
"I really like the attitudes of eagles. They never give up. When they grab a fish or something else, they never let it go. It doesn't matter. In a book, they write they find a skeleton of [an] eagle and there is no fish. It means that the fish beat him and killed him, but he didn't let go." -- Donatas Motiejunas

It's good to see that Bol is healthy again and pushing an important international issue that is ignored all over the world:
Manute Bol in Iowa -- Washington Post, December 27, 2007, Dan Steinberg

It's funny, when you get an e-mail with a subject line reading "Manute Bol Takes on the Candidates in Iowa," you figure it's gonna contain nothing but hilarity and photos of Manute Bol wearing an Abraham Lincoln hat and stumping with Ron Paul through some snowy yard to talk to Jim and Sally Dweebenzucker about corn subsidies.

But then, when you read the e-mail, it turns out that Manute Bol is actually holding a press conference and rally on the west steps of the Iowa State Capitol in Des Moines on Tuesday afternoon, while joined by hundreds of Sudanese U.S. citizens, who will be demanding the Presidential candidates address atrocities in Darfur and throughout Sudan. Among their questions:

What would you do to end the genocide in Darfur?

Should the U.S. deal with the Government of Sudan by segmenting Darfur, Southern Sudan, Nubia etc. as separate and isolated matters, or with Sudan as a whole?

See? Not funny. But Manute Bol is forever a D.C. sports figure, and Iowa is the most important place in the universe, so I'm writing about this even if no top hats are involved.
Sadly, I think he's being ignored by the candidates.

Manute Bol hospitalized with skin, kidney problems

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Former NBA center Manute Bol is hospitalized with severe kidney trouble and a painful skin condition after falling critically ill while returning home from helping fight election corruption in his native Sudan.

"I believe he is going to survive this, but he's had a total kidney failure," Tom Prichard, director of Sudan Sunrise, a group that promotes reconciliation in Sudan, said Tuesday. "If he'd stayed two more days in Sudan, I don't think he'd be alive right now."

Prichard says the 7-foot-6 (2.29-meter) Bol was returning to the United States last week and was hospitalized during a stopover at Dulles International Airport. He said Bol has undergone three dialysis treatments and has developed Stevens-Johnson Syndrome, a condition that has caused him to lose patches of skin.

The skin around Bol's mouth was so sore that he went 11 days without eating and could barely talk. Bol, 47, is on morphine and will probably be moved to a burn unit, according to Prichard.

Bol's wife and newborn daughter have traveled from their home in Kansas to be at the hospital. Bol still hasn't met his daughter because visitors are restricted, having to wear mask, gown, and gloves to prevent infection.

Prichard said it's believed that Bol contracted the skin disease as a reaction to kidney medication he took while in Africa.

He was in Sudan to help build a school in conjunction with Sudan Sunrise but stayed longer than anticipated after the president of southern Sudan asked him to make election appearances and use his influence to counter corruption in Bol's home county.

Bol played for four teams over 10 seasons in the NBA, averaging 4.9 points, 8.1 rebounds and 6.4 blocked shots.

Poor Manute Bol. He doesn't seem to have any luck. The car accident, surgeries, a partial recovery, and now this.

Hey, you're right! Good call! This is the first I've ever heard of a Moomin. Somebody must have photoshopped that guy in there, because the article doesn't say anything about Moomins playing basketball.

I'm definitely going to sign into Facebook tonight and write a little message for Bol. I really love to see former and current players doing work in Africa.
Bol Doing Better - May 26, 2010, by Jorge Sierra, HoopsHype.Com

Former NBA player Manute Bol has started to show some progress after one week in a hospital in Northern Virginia. So says friend Tom Pritchard, who has worked with the 7-foot-7 Bol in trying to promote reconciliation between Christians and Muslims in war-ravaged Sudan.

Bol was hospitalized on May 18 after falling critically with severe kidney trouble and a painful skin condition called Stevens-Johnson Syndrome.

“He is doing a little better,” Pritchard, the founder of NGO Sudan Sunrise, said. “He is receiving dialysis treatments, and they are treating the Stevens-Johnson Syndrome, which is causing his skin still to itch terribly. He has been transferred out of Intensive Care, and is beginning to eat a little.”

Bol, who has been riddled with health problems ever since a car accident in 2004, had spent the last few months in his home country in order to build a school in conjunction with Sudan Sunrise and help tackle corruption with election appearances upon the president’s request.

The former player of Washington, Golden State, Philadelphia and Miami, considered the tallest in NBA history, has received hundreds of get-well messages on Facebook that will be printed and passed to him.

“The outpouring of love and encouragement from his fans around the world has been wonderful,” Pritchard said.

                          RIP

My sincere condolences to his family and loved ones.

He was one of the best shotblockers ever to play in the NBA and a true gentlemen. He organized many charitable events especially trying to help out his impoverished native country Sudan.

P.S: He is the only player in NBA history to block more shots than points scored, blocking 2,086 shots and scoring 1,599 points

(Rik I just realized that there is another thread dedicated to Bol. Can you please merge the threads together. Cheers)

R.I.P. 4 blocks in a row... More blocks than points scored. He definitely will not be forgotten.

PS.: His name is not Manu. He is Manute. What's up with the name twisting? Emanuel, Manute = Manu; Mehmet = Memo; Hidayet = Hedo... This is stupid...
