ALG – The national team in training in Algiers

The Algerian men national team is going on in Algiers with its cycle of preparation, as set up in the action plan of Algerian Federation’s national technical direction, in anticipation of the upcoming competition.
In fact, fifteen players have been called by the technical staff of the national team made of the coach in head Ali Filali and his deputy Achour Sekhi, for a training starting from 7 to 10 February 2010 at the centre national teams of Ghermoul (Alger), while the dual daily training are taking place in Harcha room or arena. This stage is descending from series of periodic stages held since the month of past December, and to be gone on with regularly within the coming weeks, according to the DTN’s program.

«We are scrupulously applying the action plan set up by the DTN in anticipation of the future cases written down in the official schedule of the national team, namely the Arab Nations Championship 2010 in Syria, and the qualifying rounds of Afrobasket 2011», reported to APS, the coach in head, Ali Filali.

Regarding the group of players retained for these trainings or stages, the national coach underlined that it has entirely been rejuvenated, after having excluded all former players having taken part in the qualifying rounds of Afrobasket 2009 and 2009 Arab Nations Championship organized in Morocco and took end in bitter failure for the both competitions.

«We decided to set off again on new basis, by calling a new generation of players which average of age is not more than 23 years, and will be able to give us more satisfactions », he added, underlining that only the former player, Nabil Saïdi (TBB Blida) has been kept for his great experience.

Regarding the next Arab Championship planned for next July in Damas, Mr. Filali indicated that the working is still going regularly on with two prior competitions stages in Turkey (21 February - 2 March) and in Serbia in course of March, in course of which there will be a valuation of the working carried out since the beginning of the preparation. «The current group of players will be reinforced with four elements, playing in American university championship, who gave their theoretical approval to joint the Green from the 2nd stage of March», while confirming their participation in Syrian appointment. The players playing in USA, are Benzegal brothers (Mounir et Mohamed, Cheriet Mahdi and especially Mohamed Benseghir who is 2,10 feet tall «The Arab championship remains for us an intermediary objective, because we particularly aim at Afrobasket 2011. But, we may before, snatch our ticket during the zone tournament to be organized by us in Alger, with Morocco and Libya», underlined again the national coach. For the national technical staff, doors remain opened to give chance to players from small categories in order to ensure the continuation this selection which often suffered in the past from a lack of relief. «We should take players from younger categories and give the possibility to the best players to wear the national jersey», specified Mr. Filali who deplores the lack of working «We are obliged to achieve in selection, the working that must be carried out at their clubs level, what prevent us to be concentrated at technical and tactic levels», has ensured the national coach while recognizing the harsh conditions, at material level faced to by most of clubs. Furthermore, a specific working is being done at level of some posts, such as pivots taken in charge by Rabah Terraï, former national coach, and regrouping three days per week, the best pivots of the selection, for a better use of their potential. It necessary to underline that out of the fifteen players retained, six are part of WO Boufarik, the current co-leader of national championship with GS Pétroliers dual champion like NB Staouéli and TRB Blida. Only one player from lower divisions was called. It is about Mohamed Ouadani (2, 04 m) from OB Bel-Abbès.

Harden's Beard Put To Shame at FIBA Africa Championships
                  ku-xlarge.jpg
James Harden may have the most extraordinary beard in the NBA, but the most impressive beard in basketball belongs to Fathi Oukerimi of Algeria. The look is further punctuated by the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar-esque protective goggles and the receding hairline.

A native of Sidi Aissa, Algeria, the 33 year-old guard scored 6 points in his country's 67-63 victory over Egypt yesterday in Abidjan, Cote D' Ivoire. We can only hope that someday Harden gets a chance to play against Oukerimi in what would truly be a battle of the beards.
