I still don't know what are the reasons behind the declination, but this is very bad for Portuguese basketball. Are they happy about conquering LPB and that's it?

I think that's a mistake of Benfica's managing. Benfica has a roster to be a competitive team at EuroCup or to be one of the favorites at EuroChallenge. I'm disappointed!!!:(

It's ridiculous! They won't have a team like that again in a near future to be able to compete in Europe. It's a total lack of ambition and vision.

The main reason I think they should go to EuroChalenge this year it's because next year Porto will have a good team there are no guaranties of winning the championship like this year.

So, if that's it, is one more reason to play at EuroChallenge. As they don't have the guarantee of play at 2010/2011 season, play when have the possibility (2009/2010)...

If they manage to renew Doliboa's and Raheim's' contract they will have the same team but like you I can't see the team improve.

I have been watching trough out the season the under-20 team, I think they have at least 2 good players that could get some minutes against the weaker opponents. Diogo Correia (PG) and Cristovão Cordeiro (SF/PF).

I hope Henrique Vieira sees the importance of developing young players.

Yes, in Plowden, Jacques and Lisboa era, Benfica was able to face-off powerhouses because basketball was very important for the club managers. I don't think it goes like that nowadays...

Don't think it'll become true. It makes no sense to create a team from scratch or have one which already exists in ACB. And how would the relagation thing work? Logistically it would also involve many costs. I think it's pure speculation and a way to advertise stuff. An Iberian league or tournament would be a good idea though.

I agree with you on everything! Which team would be? It's difficult to make a competitive team to play the ACB. It's difficult, bearing in mind the basketball backing in Portugal, to have a 3,5 million € budget. An Iberian League, following the Adriatic League example, would be much better...

POR - American player Widemond of Ovarense dies In Portugal

LISBON (FPB) - Portuguese basketball is in shock following the death of Ovarense’s American guard, Kevin Widemond.

The 23-year-old, who hails from Newark, New Jersey, and played basketball at Texas A&M University-Commerce, had only joined the team last month.

Widemond was on the bench during Ovarense’s game against Academica in Leiria over the weekend when he just collapsed.

Emergency services took Widemond to Santo Andre Hospital but could not revive him and he was pronounced dead.

"The Federation laments to announce that Kevin Widemond died after suffering cardiac arrest," a Portuguese Basketball Federation statement said.

Ovarsense sporting director Jose Eduardo described Widemond as a “good person and very humble”.

Eduardo said that the player had undergone a battery of medical tests when he joined them and also explained that he had no negative medical history.

Oh yes I think he can fit in a team like Mouttahed. I don't know what plans the team has for him, but he's definitely a quality player to come off the bench in any FLB team. Very strong presence inside, good shot blocking abillities, defense alert player and he's also a consistent scorer. If Mouttahed wants him to start, he will also be of great help of course. Contrary to what asia-basket states, he ended up not taking part in the All-Star game last season, because of injury I think...
