WEST Sydney has recruited American point-guard Justin Bailey in the hope his experience can rub off on the NBL outfit's younger players.

The 29-year-old arrives in Sydney on Thursday to join the Razorbacks after seven years in Europe.

Bailey spent time at clubs in France and Italy and most recently FC Porto Ferpinta in Portugal.

Razorbacks coach Mark Watkins hopes the import will exert a strong guiding influence on his younger players and create an explosive backcourt partnership with prolific point-scorer James Harvey.

"We've opted for a mature point guard," Watkins said.

"Bailey is 29 and brings a wealth of experience from having played in good strong competition in Europe.

"Certainly he is noted for his leadership qualities. He's very quick off the dribble, and can score the points as well as bring other players into the game.

"Plus he's a very good defender. He has all the qualities that we're looking for in a point guard."

Bailey hails from University of Hartford in Connecticut. In his final year, as a senior in 1999, he averaged 20 points, three assists and five rebounds.

With Porto last season he averaged nine points, four assists and four rebounds.

In 1999-2000 he played with Levallois in France and the following season joined Nuova Pallacanestro Pavia in Italy.

The Razorbacks plan to fill the remaining hole in their roster with an imported centre.
