NBA star player LeBron James will visit a high school in Seoul on Aug. 12 for the opening ceremony of an outdoor basketball court constructed using funds he donated.
The 21-year-old Cleveland Cavalier, a member of the U.S. team visiting Korea for the World Basketball Challenge, sponsored the ``LeBron James Court’’ at Whimoon High School to help promote the sport in Korea.

Last year, Vince Carter of the New Jersey Nets made a similar act of good will, founding a basketball court in Chamwon-dong, southern Seoul.

James and other U.S. team members will arrive in Seoul on Aug. 11.

The World Basketball Challenge, which takes place from Aug. 11 to 15 at Chamsil Stadium in southern Seoul, is a five-nation friendly series between Korea, the U.S., Turkey, Lithuania and Italy.

The U.S. team plays Korea on Aug. 15 and plans to open its practice session to the public from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Aug. 12 at the stadium.

            Korea Loses to Turkey 70-67

Kim Min-soo had a game-high 16 points and grabbed five rebounds for the Korean national football team Friday, but Turkey outworked Korea in the final two quarters and won 70-67 in the opener of the World Basketball Challenge at Chamsil Stadium, central Seoul.

The WBC, a group of exhibition matches between Korea, Turkey, U.S., Lithuania and Italy, is being held through Tuesday at Chamsil.

The four visitors participated in the event in preparation for World Championships to be held on Aug. 19 in Japan. Korea failed to qualify for the 24-country competition after finishing fourth in the Asian Championships held in Qatar.

Korea will play Lithuania today, Italy on Sunday, and the U.S. on Tuesday in the remaining matches.

In the game that drew only 4,325 crowd, the Korean team, ranked 23rd in the world, led a low scoring game 32-31 through the second quarter while the 18th ranked European opponent took off the second half.

Bang Sung-yoon scored 12 points including three 3-pointers and Ha Seung-jin of Milwaukee Bucks, the first NBA player from Korea, had 10 points, six rebounds. Yang Dong-keun added 10 points, four rebounds.

Serkan Erdogan led the Turkish team with 14 points.

Turkey came from behind to upset Italy 72-61 in a warm-up here for the World Championships that open in Japan next week.

Turkey, ranked 18th in the world, was behind the world's sixth ranker 34-38 after the second quarter on Saturday, but reversed the score to 56-52 in the third quarter before racing ahead to win 72-61 over the world's fourth ranker.

Kutlay Ibrahim was the best scorer for Turkey, collecting 22 points with two two-pointers and six three-pointers.

Erdogan Sercan wasn't far behind, contributing 20 points with three two-pointers, four three-pointers and two free throws.

Turkey has now chalked up two straight wins after defeating host South Korea 70-67 the previous day in the five-nation build-up.

In an earlier match, Lituania edged out South Korea 83-81.

Ranked fourth in the world, Lithuania were behind the underdog South Koreans 37-40 after the first two quarters. They made it 58-59 in the third quarter before winning 83-81.

Darjus Lavrinovicius was the top scorer for his team, making eight rebounds and 18 points.
