if theopile is the one waering the jesrsey #12 then he's big and looks athletic.. and the chinese team don't look small and skinny. it's a sign that they're not pushovers.

i think the PBA RP jersey is reserved for PBA Rp only.. the current men's team's(in china) jersey is also sponsored by nike.

i can only assume that marcy is part of the mythical team since he got a trophy. congrats to the RP team. even if they are just part of the training pool, they showed they can jell. coach toroman is showing that RP basketball is on the right track and hopefully that will silence his critics the BCAP.

this team is not part of the CBA, it is a team from the Chinese Amateur Basketball Open.

the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region team is a team of amateur players from that Chinese Province that is sponsored by Lin Ning Sports Shoes and Apparels.

One of their endorsers is Shaquille O' Neal.

RP rules Guangxi meet

GUANGXI, China. Ė Fil-Am Joey Deas and FEU guard Mark Barocca stood tall against the bigger and more experienced Li Ning squad to lead the Smart Pilipinas National Team to a 76-72 victory and the title in the 1st China-Asean CBO Menís Invitational Tournament before a packed crowd at the Pinggou Arena here Sunday.

Deas, a 5-foot-10 point guard from Rockhurst University in Kansas who traces his roots to Cebu, and Barocca, a 5-foot-9 native of Zamboanga City, combined for 37 points and made crucial baskets down the stretch as the nationals turned back a spirited rally by China from 15 points down in the second half to en route to victory and the cash prize of 50,000RNB.

The taller Chinese team, with an average height of 6-foot-6, had more rebounds 44-33 but the RP team made up for it with tenacious defense, limiting China to only 2-of-15 shooting from 3-point range and forcing 14 turnovers. The Filipinos also shot 48 percent from two-point range and 15-of-21 from the line even though they committed more fouls 26-16.

Serbian coach Rajko Toroman, the project director of the National Team who formed the RP squad barely two-and-a-half weeks ago, expressed satisfaction with the win, saying: "It was a tough but definitely sweet victory. I challenged the boys to show their true character and they did. We did not expect to win right away so this is a very good start for our program."

Playing before a partisan home crowd that included its top local officials, China stormed to an early 6-0 lead but the RP squad, bankrolled by Smart and outfitted by Nike, fought back with six straight points from Deas. After that, the Filipinos, despite the chilly conditions, controlled the pace to take an 18-14 lead after the first period.

"Itís hard to play before a hostile crowd and under these conditions. But this victory is truly special. After all, itís not every day that you win against China in its own turf," said Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas Executive Director Noli Eala said.

"We are happy for the progress of this young team. But there is still a lot of work ahead," Eala said, adding the team will be groomed to represent the country in the 2009 SEA Games in Laos, 2010 Asian Games in China and 2011 Fiba Asia Menís Championship Qualifier for the London Olympics.

After taking a 41-27 advantage at the half, the Filipinos raced to their biggest lead at 50-35 behind a sleek running game and all court pressure defense. China, represented by the Li Ning Basketball Team of Guangxi featuring five Chinese Basketball Association All Stars, fought back through the efforts of 6-foot-10 center Gao Wei to trim the deficit to 50-43.

Deas kept up the pressure for the RP team, scoring seven of his team-high 19 points in the quarter to give the Filipinos a 58-47 lead going into the payoff quarter.

Gao and 6-foot-4 point guard Nong Jie led a 9-0 rally for the home team at the start of the fourth and closed in at 58-56 with 7:16 remaining. Deas responded with six straight points as the RP team took a 64-56 cushion before the Chinese fought back with a 11-4 run behind the exploits of sweet shooting Hu Bin to trim the lead to 68-67.

Dylan Ababou scored with the shot clock expiring to give the RP team a 70-67 lead and after Gao completed a three point play off Fil-Am Greg Slaughter with 1:03 left to forge a 70-all count.

Barocca, however, took charge. The diminutive point guard playing in his first international tournament scored on a crucial jumper to give the Philippines a 72-70 lead with 47 seconds to go.

Philippines beat China; wins 1st China-ASEAN basketball title - Dec 22, 2008 (by Hector Santos)
GUANGXI, CHINA: Fil-American Joey Deas (178-G) and Far Eastern Universitys Mark Barocca powered the Philippines against a bigger and more experienced Chinese team, 76-72, to win the 1st China-Asean CBO Mens Invitational Tournament before a packed Pinggou Arena.

Deas, a 5-foot-10 point guard from Rockhurst University in Kansas who traces his roots in Cebu, and Barocca, a 5-foot-9 native of Zamboanga City, combined for 37 points to help turn back China to claim the first international victory for the RP Developmental squad.

After Dylan Ababou scored with the shot clock expiring to give the Filipinos a 70-67 lead, Gao Wei converted on a three point play off a foul by Fil Am Greg Slaughter with 1:03 remaining to tie the score at 70 all.

Barocca then took charge.

Playing in his first international tournament, Barroca scored on a crucial jumper to give the Philippines a 72-70 lead with 47 seconds to go. After a split charity by Hu Bin on a foul by Mac Baracael, the Chinese had a final chance to take the lead after a botched play by the RP 5.

But the Filipinos would not be denied as Ogie Menor stole the ball from Hu setting up a Barocca fastbreak to give the Smart RP squad a three point lead 74-71 with 32 ticks remaining. Gao then scored another split free throw with 15 seconds remaining before Barocca was fouled for the final score.

China with an average height of 6-foot-6, outrebounded the Philippines, 44-33. But the RP team made up for it with tenacious defense, limiting China to only 2 of 15 shooting from 3-point range and forcing them to commit 14 turnovers.

The Filipinos also shot 48% from two point range and 15 of 21 from the line even though the Nationals were charged with 10 more fouls, 26-16.

Rajko Toroman, the Serbian Coach and Project Director of the National Team, who formed the young RP squad barely 20 days ago, expressed satisfaction with the win.

'It was a tough but definitely sweet victory. I challenged the boys to show their true character and they did. We did not expect to win right away so this is a very good start for our program,' Toroman said.

Playing before a partisan home crowd and with Guangxis top local officials in attendance, China scored the first six points.

The RP squad, which is bankrolled by Smart and outfitted by Nike, answered with 6 straight points from Deas to tie the game early. Finding their bearings under chilly conditions, the Filipinos controlled the pace of the game to take a slim lead 18-14 after the 1st period.

'It is hard to play before a hostile crowd and under these conditions. But this victory is truly special. After all, its not every day that you win against China in their own turf, 'SBP Executive Director Noli Eala said. 'We are happy for the progress of this young team. But there is still a lot of work ahead,' Eala added.

The scores:

PHILIPPINES 76 Deas 19, Barocca 18, Ababou 15, Slaughter 9, Menor 6, Baracael 4, Cawaling 3, Theophile 2, Sison 0, Arellano 0

CHINA 72 Gao 32, Hu 15, Nong 9, Cui 6, Wei 6,Wang 4, Liao 0.

Yes. However, it is a long-term program. The team sent to China is part of Coach Toroman's 25-man developmental pool from which the 2009, 2010, and 2011 teams will be taken. The said pool has at least three players standing 6'8" and above, the tallest of which is Gregory Slaughter standing at 6'11.

By the way, Slaughter is not in the CESAFI selection that competed in Hong Kong. Another player, 6'9" Junmar Fajardo, started at center for the CESAFI team.

Slaughter isn't in the picture. Most likely, #12 is 6'7" forward Terrell Theophile. Slaughter was probably sitting on the bench.

The centers in the RP lineup are Slaughter and Magi Sison (6'7"). Theophile is a half-Filipino, half-American forward who played for St. Gregory's College, a NAIA school in the U.S. I guess Theophile could have played the center position at times during the tournament due to his height.
