  • LNB team rosters 2008-09

Here are some rosters so far; i'll update them from time to time, and add the others.

    Atenas de Córdoba
    Coach: Rubén Magnano
PG Juan Pablo Figueroa (age 22, 1,88)
PG Bruno Lábaque (age 30, 1,78)
SG Andre Laws (age 23, 1,85 - USA)
SG Federico Ferrini (age 25, 1,93)
SG Bruno Barovero (age 18, 1,93)
SF Juan Manuel Locatelli (age 32, 2,00)
SF Cristian Romero (age 26, 1,98)
PF Leonardo Gutiérrez (age 31, 2,00)
    PF/C Djibril Kanté (age 26, 2,00 - Ivory Coast)
    C Diego Osella (age 39, 2,09)
    C Pablo Orlietti (age 18, 2,06)

    Names you might recognize:
-Figueroa played the 2005 U21 World Cup.
-Lábaque played in Tenerife (ACB Spain) and Rimini (Lega2 Italy), as well as the 2003 South American Championship with the NT.
-Locatelli played the 2008 South American.
-Gutiérrez has been a stable member of the NT for 10 seasons played two World Cups and two Olympics, and scored key threes in the last bronze match.
-Osella was a stable member of the NT from 1990 to 1998, playing three World Cups and 1996 Olympics.
-Orlietti played the 2008 U18 Americas.

Overview: Definite title candidate. 3-time MVP Gutiérrez will lead a very experienced team, filled with great 3P shooters (Locatelli, Lábaque, Romero and Gutiérrez), hard nosed defenders all over the place, and an interesting role player like Ferrini. None of both foreigners should be a big scorer, but they certainly don't need so, and Kante is a great rebounder and defender. Orlietti is the biggest Argentine promise at center, and having Osella and Magnano around him will benefit.

    Ben Hur de Rafaela
    Coach: Luis Oroño.
PG Jonatan Machuca (age 19, 1,81)
PG Lucas Ortiz (age 21, 1,90)
SG Thiago Peres Pereira Da Silva (age 28, 1,92 - Brazil)
SG Jamal Hunter (age 30, 1,96 - USA)
SF Eduardo Calvelli (age 26, 1,95)
SF Sebastián Uranga (age 20, 2,00)
SF Ariel Hillebrandt (age 19, 1,96)
PF Sebastián Cabello (age 26, 2,04)
    C Phillip Lockett (age 19, 2,05)
    C Walter Storani (age 38, 2,00)
    RELEASED:
SG Patricio Rodríguez (age 24, 1,93)
    G Mariano Castets (age 26, 1,90)
PF Durelle Brown (age 29, 2,01 - USA)
SG James Life (age 24, 1,96 - USA)
PF George McGinnis (age 31, 2,06 - USA)

    Names you might recognize:
-Machuca and Uranga played the 2007 U19 World Cup.
-Castets played in Spanish LEB (Plasencia) and Italian Lega2.
    -Rodríguez played in Italian Lega2.

Overview: a very young and inexpensive team that won't have big goals except avoiding relegation. Machuca had a breakthrough season last year, and will co-lead the team with Castets and the Americans. Rodríguez, Calvelli and Storani are valuable role guys, but any help the kids can provide will be needed.

    Boca Juniors
    Coach: Oscar Sánchez
PG Raymundo Legaria (age 28, 1,78)
PG Nicolás Aguirre (age 20, 1,90)
SG Juan Espil (age 40, 1,92)
SF Leandro Masieri (age 32, 2,00)
SF Carl Edwards (age 27, 1,98 - USA)
PF Fernando Calvi (age 27, 2,00)
PF Gabriel Fernández (age 32, 2,04)
    C Derrick Alston (age 36, 2,08 - USA)
    RELEASED:
SF Anthony Johnson (age 29, 1,98 - USA)
    C Alejandro Alloatti (age 24, 2,05)
    C Mark Bortz (age 26, 2,08 - USA)
SG Marcos Casini (age 29, 1,94)

    Names you might recognize:

-Legaria played the 2006 South American.
-Aguirre played the 2007 U19 World Cup.
-Espil played 12 years in Europe: Tau, Joventut, Roma, Bilbao, Manresa. Was a stable member of the NT from 1992-1999, played two World Cups and 1996 Olympics.
-Casini played several years in Italian Lega and Lega2.
-Fernández played 7 seasons in Europe: Le Havre, Tau, Varese, Valladolid, Lleida. Was a stable member of the NT from 1999-2006, played two World Cups and 2004 Olympics.
-Alloatti played the 2005 U21 World Cup, also played a few years in Spanish LEB.

Overview: The sum of Fernández (possible leading scorer), Espil, Masieri and Legaria will mean a heavy rain of accurate 3P shots. Bortz and Edwards will not be decisive scorers, but are expected to be key contributors. Aguirre had a great rookie year and is a great signing, along with Casini who spent many years in Italy. Calvi and Alloatti are strictly defenders. They will be among the best.

    El Nacional de Monte Hermoso
    Coach: Juan García.
PG Fabián Sahdi (age 19, 1,90)
PG Gastón Torre (age 24, 1,85)
    G Mariano Castets (age 26, 1,90)
    G/F Ralph Holmes (age 27, 1,94 - USA)
    G/F Facundo Venturini (age 21, 1,96)
SF Alexis Elsener (age 19, 1,95)
SF Sebastián Castiñeira (age 30, 1,98)
PF Ramiro Heinrich (age 19, 2,02)
PF Dionisio Gómez (age 28, 2,03 - Panama)
    C Santiago González (age 28, 2,05)
    C James Moore (age 28, 2,08 - USA)
    Released:
SG Quincy Wadley (age 30, 1,83 - USA)
SG Paul McPherson (age 30, 1,93 - USA)
    C Donzell Rush (age 34, 2,07 - USA)

    Names you might recognize:
-Venturini played two seasons in Spanish LEB.
-Castiñeira played in Spain (Breogán) and Uruguay.
-Gómez is a member of Panama NT, played the 2006 Worlds.
-McPherson played in NBA for Suns and Warriors, in AEK, Livorno and the Harlem Globetrotters.

Overview: talented but mostly unproven kids are joined by experienced role players and a great scorer in Wadley, who should win a few games for them. Not high hopes for the team, anyway.

    Estudiantes de Bahía Blanca
    Coach: Marcelo Richotti
PG Leonardo La Bella (age 22, 1,85)
PG Pedro Franco (age 31, 1,80)
SG Juan Manuel Rivero (age 23, 1,91)
SG Mateo Gaynor (age 18, 1,95)
SF Juan Cangelosi (age 26, 1,95)
SF Lucas Bianco (age 28, 1,95)
SF Leandro Cecchi (age 20, 2,00)
PF Gerardo Barrera (age 31, 2,01)
PF Tarrie Monrore (age 30, 2,02 - USA)
    F/C Jamaal Levy (age 25, 2,06 - Panama)
    C Ed Nelson (age 26, 2,03 - USA)

    Names you might recognize:
-Rivero played the 2005 U21 Worlds.
-Cangelosi played one season in Drac Inca (Spanish LEB)
-Cecchi played the 2007 U19 Worlds.
-Levy is a stable member of Panama NT, played the 2006 Worlds.

Overview: this team was put together last-minute, since the club almost quit the league. Some guys continue from least season, others simply were the few decent FAs available. It will be tough for them.

    Gimnasia de Comodoro Rivadavia
    Coach: Nicolás Casalánguida.
PG Diego Alba (age 27, 1,81)
PG Nicolás Ferreyra (age 23, 1,85)
SG Gary Buchanan (age 27, 1,90 - USA)
SG Nicolás de los Santos (age 20, 1,88)
SF Mariano Franco (age 28, 2,00)
SF Germán Sciutto (age 30, 1,91)
PF Bruno Ingratta (age 23, 2,04)
PF Diego Romero (age 26, 2,08)
    C Ignacio Alessio (age 21, 2,03)
    C Jimmy Boston (age 35, 2,01 - USA)

    Names you might recognize:
-Sciutto played several seasons in Italian Lega2.
-Romero played the 2006 South American.

Overview: after last season's surprising finish, Gimnasia made significant improvements by signing Ferreyra, Sciutto and Romero. Boston will be again the key man, because no other guy is a guaranteed scorer. Sciutto is a mystery after all his years in Italy.

    Independiente de Neuquén
    Coach: Mauricio Santángelo.
PG Leandro Lauro (age 28, 1,80)
PG Agustín Carabajal (age 27, 1,76)
SG Federico Marín (age 26, 1,98)
SG Juan Levrino (age 18, 1,90)
SG Cedric Moodie (age 29, 1,85 - USA)
SF Martín Melo (age 26, 1,98)
PF Jervaughn Scales (age 37, 1,98)
    F/C Sebastián Chaine (age 23, 2,03)
    F/C Brice Assie (age 25, 2,00 - Ivory Coast)
    C Jefferson Agba (age 27, 2,08 - Nigeria)
    RELEASED:
    C Nathan Mielke (age 26, 2,07 - USA)

Overview: While Assie is a great signing, Moodie is a mystery. Carabajal and Marín should make an interesting backcourt, but many of the team's success will rely on Scales getting back to the scoring level of a couple years ago.

    Lanús
    Coach: Alvaro Castiñeira.
PG Nicolás Laprovíttola (age 18, 1,86)
PG Julián Olmedo (age 30, 1,88)
PG Ronald Ramón (age 22, 1,85 - Dominican)
SG Juan Pablo Sánchez (age 25, 1,90)
    G/F Fernando Funes (age 25, 1,91)
SF Diego Prego (age 32, 1,96)
PF Larry Smith (age 26, 2,02 - USA)
    F/C Andrés Rodríguez (age 31, 2,00 - INJURED)
    C Alejandro Alloatti (age 24, 2,05 - REPLACEMENT)
    C Terrell Taylor (age 27, 2,03 - USA)
    RELEASED:
PF Wendell Gibson (age 24, 2,01 - USA)
PF Sylbrin Robinson (age 28, 2,00 - USA)

    Names you might recognize:
-Laprovíttola played the 2008 U19 Americas.

Overview: a very interesting roster overall, they should have a very decent season. Gibson will lead in scoring, Prego will chip in with some points too; Rodríguez is an excellent inside backup, and Sánchez and Funes will complete a backcourt stacked with decent but not star players. The one knock on this team is not having any reliable 3P shooter.

    Libertad de Sunchales
    Coach: Julio Lamas.
PG Sebastián Ginóbili (age 35, 1,90)
PG Martín Muller (age 23, 1,95)
SG Pablo Moldú (age 30, 1,92)
SG Marcos Saglietti (age 22, 1,90)
    G/F Gustavo Oroná (age 32, 1,96)
PF Andrés Pelussi (age 31, 1,98 - INJURED)
PF Fernando Cavagna (age 29, 2,00 - TEMPORARY REPLACEMENT)
    F/C Alejandro Zilli (age 26, 2,00)
    F/C Andrés Landoni (age 18, 2,06)
    F/C Jason Osborne (age 34, 2,04 - USA)
    C Esteban Batista (age 25, 2,08 - Uruguay)
    Released:
SF Ralph Holmes (age 27, 1,94 - USA)
PG Juan Sartorelli (age 25, 1,92)
SF Bryant Markson (age 25, 1,98 - USA)
SG Willie Farley (age 33, 1,93 - USA)

    Names you might recognize:
-Ginóbili played two seasons in Cantabria (Spanish LEB), and the 2006 South American.
-Sartorelli played one season in Breogán (Spanish ACB)
-Moldú played a few seasons in Italian Lega2.
-Pelussi played three years in Virtus Bologna (Italian Lega), and the 2008 South American.

Overview: Definite title candidates. The defending champions return almost completely, except for four changes: up-and-coming Zilli is an improvement over Jorge Benítez, Robert Battle's departure is replaced by Osborne (who is a much better passer but certainly not such a go-to guy), Oroná's great shooting is another improvement, and it remains to be seen how much of Laron Profit's performance can Jackie Manuel replace. This team is stacked at every position.

    Obras
    Coach:
    Bernardo Murphy.
PG Fernando Titarelli (age 26, 1,82)
PG Cristian Cortés (age 18, 1,90)
SG Gabriel Cocha (age 37, 1,94)
SG Patricio Rodríguez (age 24, 1,93)
SG Sergio Ravina (age 22, 1,92)
SF Erron Maxey (age 29, 1,98 - USA)
SF Daniel Chaher (age 30, 1,92)
PF Lázaro Borrell (age 36, 2,03 - Cuba)
PF Fernando Martina (age 25, 2,01)
    C Omar Cantón (age 26, 2,06)
    C Tyler Field (age 28, 2,08)
    RELEASED:
SG Ángel Caballero (age 37, 1,92 - Cuba)
SF Corey Hornsby (age 26, 1,98 - USA)

    Names you might recognize:
-Caballero played all over Latin America.
-Borrell played for the Seattle Sonics in 99/00.
-Cantón played two years in Spanish LEB.

Overview: lots of inside power for these guys, thanks mostly to Borrell. Most of the team is the same as last season's, which should duplicate that unexpected great campaign.

    Olímpico de La Banda
    Coach:
    Gonzalo García.
PG Martín Trovellesi (age 27, 1,85)
PG Dallas Logan (age 26, 1,92 - USA)
SG Mariano Byró (age 26, 1,94)
SG Leonel Schattmann (age 21, 1,90)
SF Diego Cavaco (age 29, 1,98)
PF Jorge Benítez (age 35, 2,03)
PF Anthony Glover (age 26, 1,98 - USA)
    C Fernando Gutman (age 30, 2,03)
    C Joe Williams (age 29, 2,02 - USA)
    Released
    C Harry Good (age 28, 2,08 - USA)
PG Charles Jones (age 33, 1,91 - USA)
PG Eric Ferguson (age 26, 1,86 - USA)

    Names you might recognize:
-Schattmann played the 2005 U21 Worlds.
-Cavaco played the 2003 Pan Am Games.
-Gutman played many seasons in Puerto Rico.

Overview: they should have a nice LNB debut. Many good outside shooters, the bombs will keep coming. Glover will be the main scorer, Gutman will do the dirty work, and much depends on the performance of the other foreigners.

    Peñarol de Mar del Plata
    Coach: Sergio Hernández.
PG Lucas Picarelli (age 27, 1,81)
PG Sebastián Rodríguez (age 32, 1,83)
SG David Jackson (age 26, 1,85 - USA)
SG José Muruaga (age 24, 1,92)
SF Sebastián Vega (age 20, 2,00)
SF Marcos Mata (age 22, 2,03 - INJURED)
SF Fernando Malara (age 28, 1,94 - REPLACEMENT)
PF Alejandro Diez (age 21, 2,01)
PF Byron Johnson (age 27, 1,98 - USA)
PF Matías Ruger (age 17, 1,98)
    C Román González (age 30, 2,08)

    Names you might recognize:
-Vega played the 2007 U19 Worlds.
-Mata played the 2008 South American.
-González has played several seasons with the NT, including this last Olympics. He's played in Spain (León), Italy (Ferrara), Uruguay (Aguada), Saudi Arabia (Al Ittihad), Dominican Republic (San Carlos) and Venezuela.

Overview: Definite title candidate. Three potential LNB scoring leaders in González, Johnson and Jackson; many great 3P shooters in Rodríguez (also a big assist man), Muruaga and Mata; the balance seem very obvious between four offense-oriented guys and a whole bunch of high-energy versatile defenders at the bench.

    Quilmes de Mar del Plata
    Coach:
    Esteban De la Fuente.
PG Hernando Salles (age 29, 1,88)
PG Dragan Capitanich (age 18, 1,90)
    G Esteban López (age 24, 1,90)
SG Pablo Gil (age 30, 1,88)
SF Carlos Dixon (age 27, 2,00 - USA)
SF Maximiliano Maciel (age 24, 1,95)
    F Nicolás Romano (age 21, 1,98)
PF Jaz Cowan (age 25, 2,04 - USA)
    C Ezequiel Dentis (age 26, 2,06)
    C Pedro Calderón (age 28, 2,10)
    Released:
SF Tiras Wade (age 27, 2,00 - USA)

    Names you might recognize:
-López played one season in Breogán (Spanish ACB)
-Dentis played two seasons in Lleida (Spanish LEB)
-Calderón played one season in ULBRA (Brazil), and the 2006 South American with the NT.

Overview: many middle-class players that mean little hopes of a title, but also should mean a quiet season. The foreigners are a mystery. Nicolás Romano is a promise to keep an eye on.

    Quimsa de Santiago del Estero
    Coach:
    Fernando Duró.
PG Jonatan Treise (age 23, 1,85)
PG Víctor Cajal (age 28, 1,78)
PG Diego Gerbaudo (age 19, 1,73)
SG Julio Mázzaro (age 29, 1,91)
SG Federico Mansilla (age 21, 1,93)
SF Brandon Mason (age 27, 1,96 - USA)
    PF/C Gabriel Mikulas (age 27, 2,00)
PF Wanderson Camargos (age 27, 2,03 - Brazil)
    C Juan Manuel Torres (age 22, 2,06)
    C Nakiea Miller (age 29, 2,07 - USA)
    Released:
PF Larry Smith (age 26, 2,02 - USA)
SF Erron Maxey (age 29, 1,98 - USA)
    C DeMarco Johnson (age 33, 2,04 - USA)
    C James Moore (age 28, 2,08 - USA)
PF Herb Courtney (age 23, 2,01 - USA)
SG Kenny Satterfield (age 27, 1,88 - USA)
    C Ramel Allen (age 29, 2,08 - USA)

    Names you might recognize:
-Treise played the 2005 U21 Worlds.
-Mázzaro played the 2005 Stankovic Cup and 2005 Americas.
-Míkulas played the 2006 South American. Played 4 years at East Carolina University, and a few months at Antwerp (Belgium) in 07/08.
-Torres played the 2005 U21 Worlds.
-Satterfield played in 01/02 for Denver and 02/03 for Philadelphia.

Overview: Mázzaro, Maxey and Míkulas will be the key scorers, Courtney should join them. Moore and Torres are mostly good blockers, and Treise is one of the best young PGs. I don't see them back in the Finals, though.

    Regatas Corrientes
    Coach:
    Silvio Santander.
PG Luis Cequeira (age 23, 1,81)
PG Alejandro Montecchia (age 37, 1,80)
SG Sebastián Acosta (age 29, 1,92)
SF Ramzee Stanton (age 29, 1,98 - USA)
SF Mariano Fierro (age 22, 1,98)
PF Federico Kammerichs (age 28, 2,03)
PF Durelle Brown (age 29, 2,01 - USA)
    F/C Roberto López (age 31, 1,98)
    C Damián Tintorelli (age 26, 2,05)
    Released:
    F Cedric Patton (age 30, 2,00 - USA)
SG Ryan Carroll (age 29, 1,94 - USA)
SF Jermaine Watson (age 27, 1,95 - USA)

    Names you might recognize:
-Cequeira played the 2007 Pan Am Games and the 2008 South American.
-Montecchia was a stable member of the NT from 1997-2004, played two World Cups and the 2004 Olympics. Played 8 seasons in Europe (Reggio Calabria, Milano, Valencia)
-Kammerichs played a few seasons with the NT, including the last Olympics. He also played ACB and LEB for Orense, Valencia, Girona, Bruesa and Murcia.
-Tintorelli played the 2006 South American.

Overview: Cequeira and Montecchia should make a great PG duo. Acosta will provide explosive scoring, and the rest of the guys will make a frontcourt stacked with decent scorers and VERY good rebounders. Title candidate, if Riveros proves LNB-worthy.

    Sionista de Paraná
    Coach:
    Sebastián Svetliza.
PG Juan Cantero (age 26, 1,90)
PG Javier Martínez (age 31, 1,89)
PG Ramiro Iglesias (age 18, 1,85)
SG Eduardo Villares (age 30, 1,88)
SG Daniel Hure (age 25, 1,95)
SF Matías Fioretti (age 24, 2,03)
SF Maurice Spillers (age 35, 1,98 - USA)
PF Agustín Carnovale (age 22, 2,00)
PF Chuckie Robinson (age 30, 2,01 - USA)
    C Alejandro Burgos (age 31, 2,04)
    RELEASED:
    C Pablo Rizzo (age 24, 2,00)

Overview: Robinson only plays offense, Spillers only plays defense. Villares scores but doesn't have good percentages. Cantero and the rising Iglesias form an interesting PG combo, and Burgos is perhaps the most underrated C in the league. They should have no problem making the playoffs.
