View Full Version : Group B, day 4: China vs Germany

Germany, China and Greece all have 2 losses and 1 win in Group B. Dirk and the rest are deeply hurt with two consecutive losses. Yao and China lifted off previously against Angola. Tough game to predict.

I like Germany but China and their outstanding fans deserve this one. I hope China wins, something for the people to cheer about.

For the future development of Chinese basketball I'm kind of pulling for China. I think Germany is a slightly better team, but I think the homecourt might make a difference.

Ufff.... difficult, the host.... but I believe in Nowitzki and his shots in-your-face

And i would be glad with any of those teams to win :)
But, please, no big margins :D

China dominated Angola and gave all they got against Spain and almost pulled it off. I think they will be motivated and it's going to be a very interesting game. China to upset Germany by 4 points.

While China surprised me a lot, especially defensively, I think Germany has more opportunities to defend Yao than China has to defend Nowitzki. Kaman, Femerling and Jagla are 3 guys and 15 fouls to be all over Yao. On the other side Dirk will be back and eat Wang Zhizhi and especially Yi alive. Germany might be the slightly better team, as Dtown already said. I think the game might be decided by the supporting cast's outside shooting. I'm going out on a limb and say: 82-75 for Dirk and his boys.

I predict an easy win by Germany. Dont want to underestimate the China team but this game will show their true level. If they beat the Germans they will prove their improvement but i dont see it happening.

China look like favourites. Germany look tired after the long summer they've had, their leaders are not what they used to be.. we've seen this effect with the Croatians against Argentina and we could see it with Greeks as well :( hopefully I'm wrong, but that quallifying tournament never looked like much help to those quallified, imho..

It's not on TV in the US. But you can watch it online at nbcolympics.com

All you have to do is wait until the game starts, then go to that website and click on basketball link on the left menu. Then it will say something like watch game live at the top of the basketball section and you can watch it live online for free.

That's how I have been watching all the games I can't get on TV. The connection is good too, you can see everything quite well.

I'm going with China in this game. They are better than people want to admit.

Yao is teaching Kaman on every possession. You can say what you want about Femerling, but he knows all the tricks and is defending Yao as good as you possibly can one on one. He was one of the best German players against Spain already, when he was not getting enough playing time unfortunately.

X-Berg-Hustler
08-16-2008, 12:53 PM
Femerling does a great job today against Yao. Way much better than Kaman. But why is Kaman always complaining about the international toughness under the basket. He schould know Yao and his way of playing very well.

A defensive-orientated game with China having the advantage so far. Germany is destroyed by their shooting;they can't hit anything and Nowitzki doesn't get the ball. Germany has scored only 8 points in the 3rd quarter!

edit:8 points is not a big difference(47-39 for China) but in such low-scoring games it is an important margin. Nowitzki has 2 get the matter into his hands, while on the other hand the chinese guards must make the correct decisions. Yao is the center of their game but they have 2 exploit all their options.

Yao is doing what he has 2 do. He already has 22 points, he just gave a nice assist and China leads by 12 and they have a FT. Nowitzki is forced out of the game, he can't get his shots and the chinese defense(from Yi I think) on him is great.

edit:Nowitzki responds with 5 straight points and brings Germany back within 8. There r 6' remaining and I expect 2 watch a big fight. China is worth winning though from what I've seen.

You have to be happy for China...they have played the best defense they've ever played since the first game and deserve to go through.

Yao Ming--25 points, 9/19 FG, 11 rebounds
Yi Jianlian--9 points, 11 rebounds
China--20/61 FG, 14/21 FT, 9 turnovers

Nowitzki--24 points, 7/20 FG, 7/7 FT, 17 rebounds, 7 turnovers

I thought China was the better team for most of the game, I'm pleasantly surprised by their progress under Kazlauskas.

The Kaman - Nowitzki frontcourt is far away from being one of the best in the world, in contrary to what some had predicted. In fact, Femerling did much more valuable things for the team than Kaman.

I don't think they will.Yianakis has always been against choosing teams and all the players keep saying the same.Furthermore, history has shown that the one who goes and chooses opponents usually sees his plans turned against him in the end,and I think that the greek NT knows this.IMO they will play against China to win.

I'm neutral, not bias like some Euros on here. Such childish behavior, to whine and complain about the ref right after the game. Maybe you should complain about the rims being too tight, thus the balls were rimming out because thats where the Germans lost the game. Atrocious shooting, nothing to do with the refs.

X-Berg-Hustler

Is it forbidden to complain about the refs?
Why is it childish behavior?
Of Course Germany has a bad team and played most of this game really bad. Surely we should seek the mistakes first in our own game. But if the refs made game-deciding Calls, that are disputable, why shouldn't we complain about it? Even with that bad performance we had a chance to win, but the refs had an other opinion!

Yes yes. The refs were biased but not outrageously. About the last-min call on Nowitzki, it looked a charge to me.
Dirk was soft. But the worst-performance awards go to Wang Shipeng and Zhu Fangyu. These two SFs shot like shivering chikens. Look at their pathetic fieldgoal ratios. If they can't manage the volatility, let's say we'd better aim at No 8, something in hand rather than beyond the reach of hope.

I don't like this one bit. FIBA is turning into the NBA, where it's just a show and not real basketball.

Professional basketball is built on money. Cash is king and pro sport is concubine. Ugly, but fact.:(

because greece will beat lithuania, but argentina will pwn greece.

I would rather face Lithuania but it does not matter now. We would have to face Spain or the US in a semifinal one way or another. Besides, we have the 2nd most talented team so all we have to do is perform.

Nowitzki will most likely retire now from NT, so will Kaman (LOL), Femerling and Roller.

2nd most talented? Based on what? How can you measure talent????

When you put teams like USA, Lithuania, Argentina, Spain, Croatia (why not?), next to Greece, what makes you think Greece is the 2nd?

Just put Croatia out of the equation and I tend 2 agree with u. Lithuania, Argentina and Spain r more talented. That doesn't make them better teams though.

Greece has more athletic players like Spanoulis, Diamantidis, Pelekanos, Printezis, Fotsis, Bourousis, Glyniadakis, possibly Zisis.....in general by position overall Greece is more athletic than those other teams. It is close with Spain, but I think Greece is a little bit more athletic overall.

And since when athletic is a synonym for talented?

I'm not saying that Greece (i.e. the Greek players, individually) lack talent. All I'm pointing out is that you can't measure it. Quite frankly, since you mentioned some names, I can't see how Pelekanos or Glyniadakis are particularly talented. They're athletic, they work really hard and they think of the team first and foremost. But that doesn't make them talented (or, to be precise, more talented than the 8th, 9th player of the Argentinian or the Lithuanian squad)

That's my opinion as well, that Nowitzki will think about retiring after this (disappointing) tournament. I read Kaman stating that if Nowitzki steps down he will also, so...

They are favoring USA and China blatantly. Chris Paul was taking 3-4 steps with no dribbles in the USA game and the stuff that happened in the China-Germany game. I don't like this one bit. FIBA is turning into the NBA, where it's just a show and not real basketball.

Are you American or Greek?Weird :D.

I heard that there's a big argument over Nowitzki being the flag bearer of Germany. And this failure may bring a heavy blow to him mentally.
It's a pity.Sorry to see that happen.

I wonder how much money he received from german bball federation..
that is exactly one of the reasons why I cheered for China..
atleast they didn't buy any foreign players to play for them..
with Nowitzki, Femerling and Roller retiring Germany will become a second rate european national team..
and that is exactly what they deserve..
I hope they will be in that second class for a long period..

Kaman is getting exactly 0,00 or $ from the german bball federation. He repeated it over and over. He just wanted to have the oppertunity to play in the summer on a competitive Level.
Surely after the Retirement of Nowitzki we are a second class team. But i think your hope, that we will stay there for a long period, won't be fulfilled.
There are some Prospects that can step up in 3-4 Years to bring back Germany at least to the 10 best Teams in Europe. Especially Ohlbrecht seems to be our future.

Yes yes. The refs were biased but not outrageously.
Yes, but when it most mattered the decisions lacked much consistency. I just finished watching the game, quite an emotional and competitive one, but I cannot help feeling sorry for Germany... I usually don't complain about the refs, especially when the losing team plays bad (and Germany did), but this game... Oh well

Both teams played awful, maybe the importance of this game affected those players.

The refereeing was terrible they should go to TIM DONAGHY School of Refereeing!

:D

Yeah, you are right! And then maybe they can give back the NBA playoff series victories all these years that they stole away from the Houston Rockets because of the horrible refereeing on Yao, as Tim Donaghy himself said and confirmed! I'm sure you'd support that in fact. After all, that is fair...and to do it right, the standard has to be applied to one the same as it is to the other.
