I think he will light Olympic Flame in Stadium. Still only my guess.

how about Yao?
China has always used a basketball player flag bearer in the Olympics.
1984 Wang Libin 2.02m
1988 Song Tao 2.08m
1992 Song Ligang 2.00m
1996 Liu Yudong 2.00m
2000 Liu Yudong 2.00m
2004 Yao Ming 2.26m
2008 ?

Personally, I don't think Yao will be the flagbearer this year. I think they will pick a "winner", likely a female athlete. We'll see.

Nowitzki will carry Germanys flag in Beijing, which is very atypical for us as it's his first olympic games and normally only Gold Medal winners who took part in several olympic games and don't earn big money get the opportunity. Beijing will be Nowitzkis first Olympic Games.

I think it's not about the money but about being a great athlete that has been carrying his team for years and this will probably be his first and last Olympics.

I'm happy for him. :)

Yeah it seems Dirk has the Olympic spirit in him :D .
Reminds me of a guy that held a poster of Dirk in the 2002 World Championships in Indianapolis saying: "Dirk goes berserk"

Without senior's soccer, Basketball is the most popular sport in the world, so it's kind of logical. Nice...

But, no Pau Gasol? They'll chose Nadal? Or Sastre?

I'm sorry, who is the 5th one? Yao? It won't be announced until that day.. unless you know something I don't :):)

I agree it's a very good sign for the sport. Although China always chose bball players because they are tall (so can raise the flag higher?). I suspect other sports federations also make decisions based on physical stature.

They wanted Kobe to be in the torch relay but he wouldn't pass the torch...

Lopez Lomong (1500m runner who is a Sudanese refugee) will carry the US flag.

The spanish flagbearer will be the canoer David Cal who won a gold in C1 1000 and a silver medal in C1 500 in Athens.
The first choice was gimnast Gervasio Deferr, gold medallist in vault in Sidney and Athens but i guess he refused, dont know exactly why.

The US decides their flagbearer by a vote of the captains from each sport, usually it is someone with an "inspirational" story rather than a top athlete.

I don't think Phelps is attending the opening ceremony anyway, since he competes the next morning.

How many Basketball players does it take to carry a flag?

BEIJING (Olympics) - Basketball stars Yao Ming of China, Manu Ginobili of Argentina, Germany's Dirk Nowitzki, Sarunas Jasikevicius of Lithuania and Russian Andrey Kirilenko will each carry the flag of their countries in the Opening Ceremony of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games at the National Stadium on Friday.

Yao confirmed on Thursday that he will be the flag-bearer for the second consecutive time after his first experience at the Athens 2004 Olympic Games.

"It's exciting to be the flag-bearer again in the host land. It will be totally different from my experience in Athens. The atmosphere will reach its hottest point. I'm afraid I have to wear earplugs," said Yao.

Ever since Wang Libin carried the flag at the Los Angeles 1984 Olympic Games, China has consistently chosen basketball players to have this honor, with Song Tao in 1988, Song Li in 1992 and Liu Yudong in 1996 and 2000.

Ginobili was told that he would be carrying the flag by Argentina's president, Cristina Fernandez, at a time when he was recovering from an ankle injury and his presence in Beijing was still in doubt.

Nowitzki thinks the fact that there are so many flag-bearers from the sport of Basketball underlines the sport's popularity.

"It shows that Basketball is getting bigger all over the world," he says. "It used to be a smaller sport, but now everybody plays it. The NBA has fans all over the world. It's becoming a global game."

Jasikevicius will take Saulius Stombergas' place, his former teammate who carried Lithuania's flag in Athens. "I didn't expect it, but what I can I say, it's a great honor."

Good article, greenarcher. I think all these flagbearers might be pointing to the popularity of basketball internationally. I think it's great. It seems like everybody is taking notice of our favorite sport these days!!

well, in the case of our country you probably know that Alekna was the No. 1 choice (I believe he never carried the flag), but he simply will not be there, he's training in Lithuania because his first start is on August 16th I think. Saras is just a replacement, no one in their clear mind would chose him over Alekna if sircumstances were right. anyways, I hope Virgis wins his third Olympic gold as compensation.
btw, I'm a little surprised aobut the choice of Yao. He's got zero Olympic success, he's just a very successfull trademark. I think China got totally confused with this choice or it was a childish attemt at trying to look "western and democratic".

(btw, I'm not watching the ceremony and I'm deeply dissapinted there are so many global leaders in Beijing today, at least our President did not go)

I like the Russian uniforms. Where's Dirk?

Apparently the Argentines are not satisfied with just one large flag...

Matt's Fashion Comments

The Chinese Delegation: Classy. They look great in red and yellow.
The Spanish Delegation: They look like a bunch of matadors.
The US Delegation: They look like a bunch of sailors.
The German Delegation: Drab and dull as expected
The Russian Delegation: Not bad except that I think they're wearing frilly shirts under their coats
The Argentine Delegation: Are they going to nursing school or something?
The Lithuanian Delegation: They look like a bunch of tourists.

A Greek newspaper was critical today of the Greek flag-carrier. They were saying "why not one of the bb boys". After all, Greece is aiming for 6-8 golds in this Olympics but the one that really matters and people would love most is the bb one and if they get it possibly 1.000.000 million people will flood Athens and party all night.
