  • Zhang Songtao, Yi Li in 2008 NBA Summer League

Yi Li to Play for Lakers in Summer League
According to pryuen of http://www.yaomingmania.com/forum/index.php Yi Li (204-F/G-87) will be playing for the Los Angeles Lakers in the Rocky Mountain Review Summer League.

Yi is a very talented 204 cm player who has been playing out of position at power forward for Jiangsu. Yi did not make the National Team because he is too thin to play power forward, even in the CBA. He used to be considered a more promising small forward than Wang Lei, but his lack of weight has hindered him. He is really a combo type player very much like Sun Yue and his physique resembles Sun's. Yi has some point guard skills which he exhibited when he attended the Adidas Camp in the United States several years ago.

Los Angeles General Manager Mitch Kupchak, who drafted Sun Yue, likely wants to compare Yi to Sun. Perhaps he will decide that Yi is the more promising of the two.

I wonder what year of birth Yi will use when he appears on the Lakers summer roster. His listed year of 1987 would make him ineligible for the summer league, since he would be draftable next spring.

But if he was really born in 1985, this would make him the same age as Sun. It seems to be common for young Chinese players to chop two years off their ages. If Yi Li was born in 1985, when was Yi Jianlian born?

The Lakers summer league schedule is as follows:
    July 11 vs Detroit Pistons
    July 13 vs Memphis Grizzlies
    July 15 vs Philidelphia 76ers
    July 16 vs Minnesota Timberwolves
    July 18 vs Toronto Raptors
    July 19 vs Denver Nuggets

Pretty nice that Lakers are keeping their Asian connections. They've been keeping their eye on Yi Li for a while now. I read somewhere (I think maybe Club Laker) that the Japanese National Team and Toyota Alvark guard Ryota Sakurai is also going to be on the team.

Too bad Sun won't be there, but hopefully he'll either earn a spot on the roster during preseason or go to the NBDL then get called up.

Zhang Songtao, Yi Li Play in NBA Summer League

Zhang Songtao (213-C-85) of Beijing Aoshen and Yi Li (204-F/G-87) of Jiangsu both played in the NBA summer league in Las Vegas. Zhang played for the New York Knicks and Yi played for the Los Angeles Lakers. Zhang averaged 2 points and 2 rebounds in 5 games, one as a starter, while Yi averaged 3.5 points in 2 games, also one as a starter.

Zhang averaged 10 minutes per game and his best game was 6 points in 16 minutes in an 85-80 Knick win over Phoenix. He also had 7 fouls in those 16 minutes. You are allowed 10 fouls in the summer league. I saw Zhang on TV in a couple of those games while I was in New York and he looked very agile for a 7-footer but exceedingly soft. If he went to the weight room and could put on muscles he might make the Chinese National Team one day. But seeing how soft and undefined his body is currently, it is clear why he did not make the Olympic team this year.

Zhang was listed as being born on October 27, 1987 which coincidentally is Yi Jianlian's listed birthday. Zhang's birthday on the Aoshen roster is July 6, 1985. Zhang's player profile also says he went to college at Albany, N. Y. Zhang did not attend any college in America.

Yi Li's best performance was 5 points in 18 minutes in a 95-93 Laker win over Minnesota. He did not have any rebounds or assists. Yi scored 2 points in 6 minutes in his other game with no rebounds or assists.

Yi was listed as being born on November 7, 1985. On the Jiangsu roster he is listed as being born on November 7, 1987. As mentioned in an earlier article Yi would not have been eligible to play in the summer league had he really been born in 1987. Zhang was not born in 1987 either.
