Poland coach Muli Katzurin marveled at the performances of Adam Wojcik in the national team's recent games against Germany.

But that didn't come as a surprise to anyone who has followed the team since the Israeli took the reins earlier this year.

What was it that Katzurin had said about Wojcik, now 38, when he was unveiled to the media as the new Poland coach?

"First, I want to call Adam Wojcik and convince him to play for the national team," Katzurin said.

That comment left a lasting impression on the veteran player.

"He held his word, because the next day I received a call from him," Wojcik said.

"For me, it was always a big pleasure to play for Poland. As long as I am healthy, I will help the team."

In the build-up to the two friendlies against the Germans, Katzurin expected big things from Wojcik.

"Before the (first) game, I told my assistant Ronen Ginzburg what Adam can do inside the paint," said Katzurin, the former Israel national team boss.

Wojcik then proceeded to score 18 points and grab eight rebounds.

Though Poland lost the friendly 76-62, Wojcik's effort was particularly impressive.

"That was quite a display," Katzurin said later, before adding that Wojcik could be even better next year.

"Please remember that he will be even in better shape," the coach said.

While it's nice to have the trust of Katzurin, Wojcik doesn't need additional incentive to keep playing the game for his country.

He knows that he and his teammates have a chance to do something important for the Polish game in 2009.

By hosting the EuroBasket, the sport has a chance to gain the kind of attention in the country it never has before.

"We really have high aspirations," Wojcik said.

"We want to achieve as much as we can next year at the EuroBasket."

Imho that Thomas hasn't nothing more than Koszarek (for what I've seen at Euro 2007): he's good passer, average scorer and little else, just like your starting PG.

In this case they aren't much clever, usually naturalized players are chosen carefully if they're really good and if the team can improve with him, but I don't know if there are other options for you Polish.

Of course, like Italy last year with Bargnani & Belinelli, but in every case to win you need before of all a balanced team and then a "problem solver" who can step up when necessary (you guys in Poland know better than me :D ).

Poland Hopeful Logan Waiting In The Wings

Poland may get a spark from Asseco Prokom's American guard David Logan this summer when they host EuroBasket 2009.

Logan, 26, the second-leading scorer in the Euroleague this season at 16.87 points per game, has applied for a Polish passport and should know at the end of April or early May if he is to be granted one.

"I filed all of my paperwork last week," Logan said to Basketball World News.

"Now we have to wait 45 days for the president of Poland (Lech Kaczynski) to make his decision. "

The 1.84m Logan says his point of contact regarding the Poland opportunity has not been national team coach Muli Katzurin, who will lead the team in Group D in Wroclaw against Turkey, Lithuania and Bulgaria.

"I know that he is a coach in the Czech Republic (CEZ Nymburk)," Logan said.

"He wanted to sign me this year to play in the Czech Republic but I ended up coming here. I haven't talked to him yet."

Logan had an outstanding collegiate career at Indianapolis and was voted NCAA Division II Player of the Year in 2005.

In Europe, he had stints in Italy and Israel before moving to Poland.

He signed at the start of 2007 for SKS Starogard and spent last season with BOT Turow Zgorzelec before joining Prokom for 2008-09.

While Logan hasn't grown up with the Poland youth teams, he would not be a complete stranger if he ended up competing at the EuroBasket.

"I know quite a few of the Poland players," Logan said.

"I had some on my team last year and this year, and at the All-Star Game I met some. Whenever we play against other teams, I talk to them (Poland internationals) a little bit."

As for the opportunity to play at the EuroBasket, Logan admits it's not something that he craves but admits it would be a great opportunity.

"I just know that the EuroBasket is in Poland and know the teams that are in our group, but I don't know what to expect from it overall," Logan said.

"I don't know if it would be a highlight of my career or not because I have played against a lot of good players.

"But it would definitely be a highlight of my summer.

"I would look forward to it, though."

The Windy City

Logan was born in Chicago and both watched and played a lot of basketball while growing up.

"When I was younger in Chicago, I used to live right down the street from this high school where Marcus Liberty played," Logan said.

"He ended up making it in the NBA for several years. My uncle used to always take me down there and watch him play in high school.

"He's one of the players who stood out for me when I was young. And of course there was the (Chicago) Bulls.

"Right now, the person I like in the NBA is Mike Bibby (Atlanta Hawks)."

Logan moved to Indianapolis at the age of eight and eventually attended North Central High School in Indianapolis before remaining in the city to play college basketball.

He says his experience overseas has been good both on and off the court.

"I have had a lot of fun learning and travelling, so far it's been great in Europe," he said.

"The last game in the Top 16 for us, when we beat Milan by 24 points, that was probably the one game I remember most from this season so far because we won by a lot and it was a good way to finish the Top 16."

Prokom did, he admit, exceed expectations by advancing to the Top 16.

"It was a surprise for us to make it to the Top 16 this year because the budget went down and the coach (Tomas Pacesas) probably couldn't get the players that he really wanted," he said.

"But he picked the team by himself, did a good job and surprised a lot of people."

As a player, Logan says he has gotten better.

"My game has changed a lot since I came to Europe," he said.

"I am still learning a lot about the game offensively and defensively and every year that I've been in Europe, I've improved.

"In the off-season, I work on my game a lot, doing one-on-one moves in order to be able to hit tough shots.

"To put me in a position where I can play on the ball, or off the ball - it's really helped my game."

Should he get his passport, Logan could end up being a big help to Poland as well.

Poland Still Waiting On Passport For Logan

Poland basketball fans must bide their time a little longer before knowing if Asseco Prokom's explosive guard David Logan will be able to play for the country this summer at the EuroBasket.

The American, who is currently involved in the Polish domestic play-offs with Prokom, has applied for a passport.

"Right now we do not have the passport," a spokesperson at the Poland Basketball Federation said to Basketball World News.

"We're waiting for the decision. Right now, all of the documents are with the President of Poland. If the President signs it, then we will have the decision that he will have the passport."

Logan, 26, is the leading scorer in Poland's top flight at 18.8 points per game.

In the Euroleague, Logan averaged 16.9 points.

Logan had an outstanding collegiate career at Indianapolis and was voted NCAA Division II Player of the Year in 2005.

In Europe, he had stints in Italy and Israel before moving to Poland.

Poland, meanwhile, also have their eyes on the NBA where big center Marcin Gortat of the Orlando Magic is involved in a thrilling play-off series with the Boston Celtics.

Gortat is playing an average of 12 and a half minutes per game.

When Orlando's starting center Dwight Howard was suspended for a game in the first-round series against Philadelphia, the 2.11m Gortat played 40 minutes and had 11 points and 15 rebounds.

EuroBasket hosts Poland will play in Group D with Lithuania, Turkey and Bulgaria.

Logan Cleared For Poland Duty

David Logan is set to play for Poland when they host EuroBasket in September after receiving his citizenship papers on Tuesday.

The American-born point guard attended a ceremony in Gdansk, where he was handed his documents at the Pomeranian Voivodship Office.

"I now hope to help Poland achieve great success," said the 26-year-old, who plays his club basketball for Asseco Prokom Gdynia.

"I have not had much time to dedicate to learning the language - right now I only know about 15 words. But I promise to improve my Polish."

Logan has been at Poland's training camp in Spale, where coach Muli Katzurin has been putting his team through their paces as September's EuroBasket approaches.

Before then, Poland have several friendly games lined up, including a trip to London to play in the GameOn tournament alongside Great Britain, Turkey and Israel.

Logan, who last season averaged 18.3 points per game in the Polish league, will need those games to integrate himself into Katzurin's team.

"I have not yet talked to the coach in much detail about my role on the team," Logan added. "I just hope that I can be a driving force. It is not long now until the Championships start. I think maybe Spain are the favourites, but in any event like this there are surprises. Maybe we can be that surprise."

POL - ‘Twin Towers’ Lampe, Gortat give Poland possibilities

ZARAGOZA (EuroBasket 2009) – Poland appear to have two clear advantages heading into the EuroBasket.

They will be the host nation for the event which gets underway on September 7.

The Poles will also have a very mean one-two punch under the basket.

Indeed, Maciej Lampe and Marcin Gortat could end up giving Poland one of the best frontcourts in the competition.

Former NBA big man Lampe has been in terrific form of late and he led the way with 24 points in Poland’s 82-67 triumph on Tuesday over the Israelis in Seville.

Gortat, just a couple of months removed from playing in the NBA Finals with the Orlando Magic, missed a few games while nursing a minor back injury suffered in the ´Game On at the O2´event in London, but he returned to the line-up on Tuesday and had 13 points, eight rebounds and five blocked shots.

Poland coach Muli Katzurin said of his Polish big men: "These are our 'twin towers'. It's a great combination."

No one is going to disagree with that assessment and certainly not Gortat.

"Maciej is very dangerous on offense while I scare rivals on defense,” Gortat said. "We understand each other almost perfectly.”

In the immediate aftermath of Poland´s win over Great Britain on August 14, when Gortat hurt his back, Poland looked like a team that would be hard-pressed to win a game. Lampe was not yet in his rhythm and there were questions about the severity of Gortat’s injury,

Now, Group D opponents Turkey, Lithuania and Bulgaria will be on full alert when they go up against the Poles.

"In the minds of every one of us is the awareness that when Marcin is on the court, it's harder for our opponents to attack the basket," said Poland's Michal Ignerski.

"We feel more confident because it puts pressure on them. This makes our defense looks better."

The possibilities are endless for Poland next month.

Anything can happen at a EuroBasket, especially for a host nation.

If Poland do advance from the group stage, maybe then they can start to dream of claiming a top-six finish.

That’s what is needed to qualify for the 2010 FIBA World Championship.

Gortat Will Be Ready For Poland

Poland's Marcin Gortat was the face of EuroBasket 2009 with the Orlando Magic center's image on billboards and magazine covers and television before, during and after the tournament.

Expect more of the same this summer for the Orlando man nicknamed ‘The Polish Hammer' in America because Gortat has confirmed he will represent Poland again this year when they attempt to make it to next year's EuroBasket in Lithuania.

Poland Basketball Federation president Roman Ludwiczuk travelled to the United States to meet with Gortat and has returned home with the good news.

"Marcin made a clear declaration that he will participate in the preparations for the qualifying games in August," Ludwiczuk said in the Sport newspaper in Poland.

"He said that he would be available to the new coach in July."

Poland have yet to name a new coach as a replacement for Muli Katzurin, but Ludwiczuk said he expects to have a new man in charge by the end of March.

The Poles will compete in Division A, Group C, against Belgium, Portugal, Georgia and Bulgaria.

Gortat, meanwhile, spoke recently about what it's like to be a basketball star in his homeland.

"Every year, we've got more kids that are trying to be like Marcin Gortat and make it to the NBA Finals, and just trying to get to the league," he said to NBA.com.

"I'm really happy that more people are trying to play basketball. On the other hand, I'm happy that I can help make basketball more famous."

Gortat was interviewed by FIBAEurope.com in Lodz last summer and spoke about the good fortune he had to play basketball (review here).

It's something he repeated in his interview in America.

"I'm waking up every day and pinching myself and asking, ‘Is this really happening'?" he said.

He shed light on his family's sporting background.

"My dad was a boxer, my mom a volleyball champion," he said. "I've got the right blood running in my veins."

He also wanted to set the record straight for American basketball fans on another subject.

"I like the Polish Hammer and appreciate that, but I'm the Polish Machine," he said.

"That's the nickname from Day 1 since I started playing basketball because I move like a machine."

GRISCHUK POISED FOR POLAND

// 07 March 2010
Anwil Wloclawek boss Igor Grischuk is on the verge of becoming Poland's national team coach.

The Belarus-born Grischuk, who spent his entire playing career at Anwil and received Polish citizenship in 1998, is expected to be put in charge of the national team through the 2012 Olympics on the condition he leads the side into next year's EuroBasket.

Polish Basketball Federation president Roman Ludwiczuk said to Sport.pl: "He is ambitious, hungry for success, has experience of European basketball but not as great as, for example, as (former Croatia coach) Jasmin Repesa ..."

Ludwiczuk added that Grischuk "will be perfect for this group of basketball players we have".

Grischuk, 45, became coach Anwil in 2008.

Anwil won 96-89 on Saturday over Black Energa Slupsk and trail Asseco Prokom by just one point in Poland's top flight.

He is expected to sign a contract with the federation next week.

Muli Katzurin coached the Poles at last year's EuroBasket but left the post after the team failed to reach the Quarter-Finals.

Seems like Polish NT getting into more trouble as they'll be without starting SF Ignersky, back-up PG Szubarga and back-up PF Dylewicz...

Foock  Where have you been when Poland started their qualification to Eurobasket, could escape them from wastin' 2 years...

On a serious note, with such silly attitude half of the teams should never step on the court...

I definitely see Poland becoming a much stronger force in basketball in the not too distant future. It will be a pleasure to witness.

What a pity :(

Marcin Gortat won't play in Eurobasket'11... the insurance is too expensive for Polish Federation (2 milion Euro)...

Gortat's absence is a huge blow to polish team...without his hustle plays and energy on the boards they instantly become considerably weaker. Is Lapeta gonna be starting now at a C?

I think that the roster on C will be Szeczyk/Hrycaniuk...

Without Gortat our national team is going to be blown probably. We're going to start with Hrycaniuk at Center position. Szewczyk, Hrycaniuk will form our front court probably and back court will consist players like Koszarek, Kelati and Waczyński.

The main aim for our national team on this tournament is to avoid a huge shame. Don't expect too much from us :)

Poland’s Lampe On The Way Back
By Jeff Taylor

One of the upsets to take place at last year's EuroBasket was turned in by a Poland national side that was missing a couple of vital frontline players.

Phoenix Suns center Marcin Gortat, due to insurance issues brought about by the NBA Lockout, wasn't able to represent the Poles in Lithuania and neither was his fellow big man, Maciej Lampe, because of injury.

Lampe tore his labrum and had hip surgery and is only just getting back into top shape in Spain's Liga Endesa with Caja Laboral Baskonia.

Despite their absences at the EuroBasket, coach Ales Pipan led the team to an upset of Turkey in group play, an 84-83 victory on 4 September in Panevezys.

Dardan Berisha (21 points) capped a terrific individual and team performance by hitting a game-winning jump shot just 12 seconds from the end.

The Poles held on for the triumph as Kerem Tunceri missed an attempt from long range at the buzzer.

Just one more victory was needed the following day against Great Britain for Poland.

Had they won against Luol Deng and Co, the Poles would progress in the competition against all expectations.

The talented Brits played the role of spoiler, though, and won the encounter, 88-81.

The aim is now to make it back to the EuroBasket and this summer, Poland should have a stronger team on the floor as they go up against Finland, Switzerland, Albania and Belgium in the Qualification Round.

LAMPE'S RETURN

Lampe has recovered and is playing basketball again.

He has appeared in five league games with Baskonia.

"I'm just trying to get back into the swing of things," Lampe said to Basketball World News.

"I was out for a long time but I'm feeling pretty good about being healthy and coming back."

Lampe is not easing his way back into action, but competing for a demanding Baskonia coach, Dusko Ivanovic.

The 2.10m Lampe has discovered that under Ivanovic, mental mistakes or poor execution will lead to his immediate removal from games, and harsh words from the coach.

"Yes, he's on me," Lampe said.

"It's going to take some time for him to build his confidence in me but I understand that.

"I've just got to keep working hard, doing my job, keep my mouth shut and do what he says."

Poland basketball fans, and coach Pipan, will be relieved that Lampe is on the court.

There is nothing more disruptive for a national team than to lose key players.

"I'll be with them this summer," he said.

"I'm excited, and I'm going to be there for sure."

Poland Can Count On Gortat This Summer

Marcin Gortat will play for Poland again this summer and do his best to make sure the national team returns to the EuroBasket Final Round in 2013.

The NBA Lockout prevented the Phoenix Suns center from representing his country at EuroBasket 2011 in Lithuania, where they beat Portugal and Turkey but did not progress to the second stage of the competition.

He'll be in the squad this year, though, when Poland face Finland, Switzerland, Albania and Belgium in Qualification Round Group E.

"I am coming to this summer very positive and I can assure you that I want to come to the national team and represent our country," Gortat said to mg13.com.pl.

Saying he looks at the qualifying campaign as a chance to make amends for Poland's defeat to Belgium in their vital game for first place in the group in 2010, Gortat said: "For my part, I want to join the team as soon as possible..."

"Now I am already in Poland. I came to the country to take part in family events at which I wanted to appear.

"I'm glad that I can use this time to meet with family. Now we can stay a little time.

"But I'll be here a few days, after which I'll return to Orlando to begin preparations for next season."

LOOKING TO IMPROVE

The national team will come after Gortat puts in a lot of hours on the court, and in the weight room, back in the USA.

The 'Polish Machine' teamed up often with Phoenix's point guard Steve Nash on the pick-and-roll this year when he grew into a terrific starting center after serving as Dwight Howard's back-up in Orlando.

But Gortat wants to get better.

"I've got to become a better post-up player, I've got to create more fouls, and I'm 100% sure I'm going to have to finish everything around the basket a little bit harder," he told the Arizona Republic newspaper.

"I've got to forget about being a finesse player, I've got to forget that I was able to work out with Hakeem Olajuwon (last summer) and all the Dream Shakes and left and right hooks.

"Sometimes I've got to be a simple basketball player and dunk the ball."

His aims, he says, are "just get better and bigger. That's it, that's the main thing."

Unable to represent the country in 2012 after a hard season with BC Khimki in Russia, Kelati says a return this year is possible.

"Last year, I decided to skip out because I had a tough year at Khimki and decided to rest my knee,” he said to FIBA.com.

"We'll see. It's something that's in the back of my mind.

“I felt bad that I wasn't there for them last summer but I was there watching them as they qualified (for the EuroBasket).

"I'd like to play in the EuroBasket again.

"It's always about how I feel at the end of the year because these European years, they wear you out, especially with my body, my knee.”
