Gophers forward Jamal Abu-Shamala will try out for Jordan’s national team next month, according to Gophers spokesman Matt Slieter.

Abu-Shamala is eligible to compete for the Jordanian national team because his father, Subhy, is a native of the Middle Eastern nation.

Abu-Shamala was unavailable for comment for this story.

According to asia-basket.com, Abu-Shamala is the only Division I basketball player of Jordanian heritage.

He averaged 3.4 points and 1.8 rebounds per game last season for Minnesota.

Hmm... I wonder when the time will come for an Asian/Arab player to be a top scorer for an US NCAA Div I team. Yes there's a lot of Asian representatives in many US leagues but it's very very rare for them to be the team's top scorer.

        Good point.
Rony Seikely was one of the historical scorers in the NCAA,he scored around 10000 points in his career with Syracruse.

The jordanian federation decided to naturalize either Ira Clark or Darlin Jonhson instead of Rasheim Wright to represent the NT.

As i read in other boards, the jordanian federation is doing a great efforts to find players from jordanian heritage and the last one was Sami Badawi after Jamal Abu Shamala.

but his father is from Jordan.

                          Yo Daniab!
Do u think that the level of basketball in Jordan might soon surpass that of Lebanon?
The Jordanian league has greatly improved over the last few years and the foreigners that are playing there (especially those playing with Zain) are of excellent level.
The problem in Lebanon is that our league is still considered as an amateur league and not a professional league. Most of the teams are funded by individuals (Harriri for Riyadi, Safadi for Mouttahed, etc.).
This is why I am concerned that there might be a time when we won't be able to keep improving unless we become a professional league sponsored by organizations.
Lebanon though i believe is still better since the national team has already qualified twice to the World Championships and they still have a chance to qualify to the Olympics (inshalla).

                            Hey khalid !
No Lebanon is still way way better than Jordan.
Jordan doesnt have any talent forwards and guards unlike Lebanon. The good thing in Jordan, that the federation is really thinking to prove their performances and they have started the work by naturalizing Rasheim Wright and get back the identity of some abroad players such Sam Doughlas,Enver sobsokov,Jamal El Maayta, and lately Jamal Abu Shamala,Sami Badawi,Roman Halik and Raouf Al-Obeidy.
If Lebanon also work on getting back the lebanese abroad then theres another talk even on the dominance of China in Asia.
Its pitty that Lebanon haven't yet a superleague due for the bad bad situations in Lebanon since a long time and no solution soon for it.
To progress the game,u need advertising, sponsors, money, banks, cool time, safe society.....Jordan,iran,quatar and all these countries have all the mentioned above while Lebanon doesnt.
How could we attract the sponsers and the political situation is effecting on everything in the country ???

Yeah i'm worried that if the political situation stays unstable then there won't be any sponsors and no Lebanese players abroad would be willing to come play in Lebanon.
But yeah if the situation does improve here then I think that we might be able to compete with China even though this is still a long shot. China almost has more basketball players than the Lebanese population living in Lebanon and they have excellent players over 2 meters (I think that the average height of the Chinese national team is 2 meters).
