  • Will Ricky Rubio play in the Olympics?

I figure I'll start this threat so that we can be updated on whether Ricky Rubio has made it on the Spanish NT team and of course, goes on to the Olympics!
Anybody's heard any info? please keep us(me) informed!

Spain have good guards and there will be no place for Rubio this Olympics.

There are three or four better/more experienced PGs in Spanish NT, such as:

      Raul Lopez
      Carlos Cabezas
      Jose Manuel Calderon
      Sergio Rodriguez

I believe his only chance to play on Olympics is injury of previously mentioned players.

I would guess that there will be a PG rotation of:

        Calderon
        Cabezas
        Rubio (as specialist)

Rodriguez is not really developing in Portland and would be too young in combination with Ricky and R.Lopez is not really part of the bunch that played the last few tournaments.

Imo the order of the guards for the NT more or less could be:

          - Jose Calderon
          - Carlos Cabezas
          - Ricky Rubio
          - Raul Lopez
          - Javi Salgado
          - Albert Oliver
          - Mario Fernandez
          - Javi Rodriguez
          - Victor Sada
          - Sergio Sanchez

Sergio Rodriguez is not going to go, after the last EC Pepu said that in the next big tournaments there would be some changes in the rosrter of the NT, and Sergio was the weakest part of the team, so its not a mistery to deduce that he wont go.
Also, what can u expect from a guy that hasnt played in the last 7 games of the team a single minute, and that before that, had played an average of 7 min per game? I really dont see him in the roster.

While Ricky is doing a superb seson, he is the hell of a defender and has shown no fear at the time of directing and taking responsabilities in the second best team of a league as strong as the ACB is. And he's not only doing it, he's doing it being one of the best players of the team (just after Rudy) and being even one of the best players of the league.
Imo the only thing that could stop him to go with the NT would be an injury or maybe that some of the NT staff considers him still too "unexperienced" in this kind of tournaments. In any other case, im quite sure that he will go.

But R.Lopez and Cabezas would be too similar. A combination ofone of these two and Rubio would make the team more flexible on defense.

                I would pick Ricky for the NT or 4 excellent reasons;

                1. He tops the ACB league in steals

                2. He's #5 in the ACB's overall players rankings

                3. His team is in 2nd place and won the recent Copa Del Rey tourney

                and my favorite
                4. He complements soon to be MVP Rudy Fernandez rather well!
That was'nt always the case when Rudy had to step up to the starting spot at last years Euros. He seemed kind of lost, especially when his pal, Sergio Rodriguez was'nt given mich playing time. Rudy and Ricky would make possibly the best guard sub combination at the Olympics

anyways, Spain's NT is my fav team, but naturely I would like to see some changes since they did'nt win last years Euro's

The fouth point is a really good one.

And dont worry, you will see some changes in Spain's roster. Sergio wont go, Berni is more than probable that will stay at home too (Bullock would be a huge replacement there), and Garbajosa is still quite doubtful if he will arrive on time for the Olimpic Games on time
