  • Rasho Nesterovic Traded from Spurs to Toronto...

    http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news?slu...v=ap&type=lgns

Spurs send Nesterovic to Toronto for Bonner, Williams
SAN ANTONIO (AP) -- The San Antonio Spurs traded center Rasho Nesterovic and cash to the Toronto Raptors on Wednesday for forwards Matt Bonner and Eric Williams, and a second-round pick in 2009.

The move creates flexibility for the Spurs on their roster and salary cap.

The 30-year-old Nesterovic has $23.5 million and three years left on his contract, while Bonner and Williams are entering the final year of their contracts. They could be traded again to teams hoping to open cap room next summer or the Spurs could keep them and enjoy that luxury themselves in 2007.

Raptors general manager Bryan Colangelo is eager to put the 7-foot, 255-pound Nesterovic in the middle alongside blossoming forward Chris Bosh.

"He's a smart basketball player who will help address our needs, particularly on the defensive end of the floor," Colangelo said.
Nesterovic signed with San Antonio three summers ago with the unenviable task of replacing David Robinson -- numerically, that is, as no one expected him to live up to the Admiral's standards.

Nesterovic averaged 8.7 points and 7.7 rebounds over 28.7 minutes his first season, then dropped off drastically. He was down to career lows of 4.5 points and 3.9 rebounds this past season, while splitting time with Nazr Mohammed.

Neither center played much in the second-round series against Dallas, which the Spurs lost in seven games. Coach Gregg Popovich used a smaller lineup with forward Robert Horry at center and hinted he might go with that kind of lineup more next season.

This move could be the first step in that direction, with the 6-foot-10 Bonner a candidate to start in the middle.

Mohammed is a free agent, so whether the club tries to re-sign him will be the next indicator. If the Spurs are interested in keeping Mohammed, he might be more willing to listen with Nesterovic out of the way.

Bonner, coming off his second season out of Florida, averaged 7.5 points and 3.6 rebounds last season. He also made 42 percent of his 3-pointers.
"Bonner is a big guy who has the unique ability of knocking down the outside shot, which will help us spread the floor," Spurs general manager R.C. Buford said. "Williams gives us a steady veteran presence and some added depth at the forward position."

Williams, who turns 34 next month, is an 11-year veteran with career averages of 8.8 points and 3.3 rebounds. He played only 28 games last season and averaged a career-low 3.3 points. The Spurs will be his sixth team, fifth in four seasons. He was acquired by Toronto in the deal that sent Vince Carter to New Jersey.

The Raptors also released center Robert Whaley.

Not only for Javtokas but also for Scola. Probably both will be in San Antonio next season

I hear the news about Scola's buyout being lowered are rubbish and that he's not going anywhere at least now.

As for Spurs and Raptors -- a good trade between two great GM's. Canadiens get a super-upgrade over Araujo. And San Antonio wanted to get rid of Nesterovic's contract since last summer. Good for the Slovenian also.

          yeah, baby SHOW TIME!!
          ...well, not exactly but...
Depending on the role Nesterovič will get, he could easily be a 15ppg, 8rpg, 2 bpg type player if given some trust by the coach= worth of his contract...
onlything I am dissapointed is that Udrih wasn't traded as well...

          good news afterall...

And lets not forget Oberto will probably get some minutes from this too, with or without Scola or Javtokas.

Great signing for Toronto...with Rasho they get experienced player who will be instrumental for raising their level of defense...with Ukic most probably already going to NBA next season Toronto is also getting a mentor for him...they are building quite a nice team this season...and still they have 1st pick of the draft and are trying to sign some other great european players...Garbajosa?...it looks like Toronto will become a team with most european players ...maybe also european GM

Rasho and Ukic with the 1st pick possibility of picking Bargnani with Calderon running the point and Pape Sow on the bench, Toronto could be a very diverse international team in a couple years...

I have this unique theory that Toronto will draft Morrison... this trade makes me belive more on the theory
                  C/PF- Rash, Bosh, Villanueva
                  SF- Morrison

a SG and a PG away from contention

Garbajosa confirmed that he will sign with Toronto on 1st July...he is traveling to Canada to finalize all the details and to look for real estate to live in etc...Garbajosa also stated that he personally will pay the buy-out of his contract with Malaga so he would get the chance to play in the NBA.

Toronto is really becoming european NBA team...they will be fun to watch this year ...with Rasho and Garbajosa they will also get experience they need.

On the other hand it looks to crowded for Bargnani at the moment...maybe if he would play SF...which is not impossible

                      Raptors 06/07:

                      C: Nesterovic
                      PF: Garbajosa
                      SF: Bargnani
                      SG: Ukic
                      PG: Calderon

+ Italian management + Messina or Blatt as head coach in future.

                      Funny stuff.

That team would rock in Euroleague, but not in NBA.
"Rudy Gay is a pretty good young player and yet he might be the only BB player that people feel very uncomfortable wearing his jersey."

I know. They'll have American starters other than at center. I'm just impressed with the quickness and level of their European turnaround.

The Raptors signed their second-round pick from last year, Uros Slokar to replace Pape Sow. Garbajosa has yet to sign, and the signing of Slokar now tells me that something has fallen through and the Raps might not sign Garbajosa after all.

Slokar was asked about his role in Toronto this year and he also included Garbajosa in the lineup when commenting his playing time...he stated that the reason he signed was the injury of Pape Sow...so Slokar transfer IMO is irrelevant to that of Garbajosa.
