Too bad Picu's not playing. I'd prefer his leadership to be on the court, rather than the x's and o's, although I bet he makes a good bench coach as well.

I am looking forward to Rick Apodaco getting more playing time even though it's because Eddie Casiano not's playing. He is a diamond in the rough.

I heard (http://www.eurobasket.com/scg/scg.asp) that PR NT will take part in the tournament in Valencia/Alicante (Spain) on 30/31.07., together with Spain, China and Serbia...

no word from officials in Puerto Rico. last time Puerto Rico played Serbia (then Yugoslavia) in a preparation game was in 2002 and Arroyo got injured, but we ended up beating them in the WBC :D

Now I understand Danny Santiago and Peter John Ramos are not participating. I wonder what the circumstances are. If that is the case, Puerto Rico won't have much size, which helped them in the past. At least not quality big men anyway.

SAN JUAN (FBPR) - The Puerto Rican Basketball Federation (FBPR) have announced that players who refuse to play for the national team will be banned for between three and five years.

FBPR president Hector Reyes announced it as a warning to all players who have refused to confirm their availability for the upcoming international competitions.

Chief among them is centre Daniel Santiago, who has been included in coach Julio Toro's preliminary squad for the FIBA World Championship but is still debating whether to make himself available.

"We say this for Daniel Santiago, for the situation we had last year with the Cabrera sisters (Yahimilly and Yoliana), for Josue Soto and others," said Reyes.

The Cabrera sisters were given a one-year suspension in 2004 for having refused to be part of Team Puerto Rico in a tournament in Havana, Cuba, while Soto missed the U18 FIBA Americas Championship played in the United States, quoting university exams as his reason.

The suspensions will mean players who refuse to play for the national team will not be allowed to play in any domestic league, or transfer to play in an overseas competition.

"These decisions were already included in statutes, but we'll be more energetic by imposing the bans," added Reyes.

Under the new rules, players who refuse to play for the first time will receive a three-year ban, while repeat offenders can be handed up to a five-year ban.

The Latinbasket website said Peter John Ramos is going to play for the national team. That certainly helps PR in terms of size. Maybe more. I was watching him play in a summer league game for the Wizards, and he looked rather light on his feet.

When I saw him play for PR last summer, he was really slow and had no stamina. Now he seems to be in better shape. Just his presence alone will help PR's perimeter game.

PRs jerseys are always tight! Do you have any better pics of them you could post??

I know this might be a dumb question but is there a reason Guillermo Diaz didnt make it? PR has known him since his volleyball days so its not like he is underground.

actually, Puerto Rico has the B Team playing on the CentroAmerican and Caribbean Games in Colombia.

The roster is...
4- Luis Villafañe (6'10" Center)
5- Filiberto Rivera (6'2" Point Guard)
6- Jose Juan Barea (5'10" Point Guard)
7- Andres Rodriguez (5'10" Point Guard)
8- Gabriel "Pirulo" Colon (6'7" Small Forward)
9- Alex Falcon (6'7" Power Forward)
10- Alejandro "Bimbo" Carmona (6'5" Shooting Guard)
11- Hector Valenzuela (6'8" Power Forward)
12- Angel "Buster" Figueroa (6'5" Small Forward)
13- David Huertas (6'5" Shooting Guard)
14- Carmelo Antrone Lee (6'7" Small Forward)
15- Angelo Reyes (6'8" Power Forward)
Coached by the usual assistant coach Manolo Cintron.

In Puerto Rico, practicing for the WBC are Carlos Arroyo, Bobby Joe Hatton, Larry Ayuso, Rick Apodaca, Antonio "Puruco" Latimer, Daniel Santiago and Peter John Ramos. Shariff Fajardo had surgery, he is still with the team, attending practices, but not practicing.

From the CentroAmerican Team, that just rolled over Mexico, we have Filiberto Rivera, the last cut of the Cavs Camp last year, Jose Juan Barea who already has made a name for himself in international ball, Andres Rodriguez, who played for Union Olimpija in the EL some years ago, Bimbo Carmona, who attended Detroit Pistons camp last year, Buster Figueroa who is the BSN leading scorer (europe will know him soon), David Huertas, from the NCAA Champs Florida Gatos, and Angelo Reyes, the up and coming PF who will be a surprise for a lot of people in the WBC (if he makes the team, since he already had trouble with the NT Coaches)

the team traveled today to Las Vegas, to a scrimmage with the US team, and an exhibition game.

Carlos Arroyo, Bobby Joe Hatton, Christian Dalmau, Larry Ayuso, Rick Apodaca, Antonio "Puruco" Latimer, Manuel Narvaez, Daniel Santiago and Peter John Ramos were the first players to arrive in Las Vegas. 4 or 5 players from the CentroAmerican Team will join the squad as soon as the Games are over. Alejandro "Bimbo" Carmona, Angel "Buster" Figueroa, Filiberto Rivera, Angelo Reyes and Jose Juan Barea are the most likely to join the team in US.
