If I'm not wrong this should be his third season here, I like Aubry, he is a great role player.

About Inaugural game, Leo Gutirrez could have his best season in his career, his seems in his prime.

Is good to see Schattmann's getting minutes and hitting 4/4 form 3 PT...

El Nacional jersey is pretty cool

It looks to me like the scores are down from what they were a few years ago. I seem to recall that the LNB was a high-scoring league, but these numbers look like the Eastern Conference in the NBA.

Leandro Gutiérrez is one of my favorite Argentine players (if he's the same guy from the NT). He reminds me a lot of Scola. I think he could make the NBA. It's good to see him succeeding and leading Boca.

If you are talking about the 90's, that high scoring was because between 93/-98 the LNB playerd 48-minute games.

I think the NBA is a little too much (he's too short for a PF, and he's 30 years old), but he is definitely the best clutch player today. And a very effective three-point shooter, he shoots more threes than twos nowadays.

True, i must be the season with the most minutes played by young players in some years.

I think the NBA is a little too much (he's too short for a PF, and he's 30 years old), but he is definitely the best clutch player today. And a very effective three-point shooter, he shoots more threes than twos nowadays. I first heard about Gutierrez in 2002 at Indianapolis, before he joined Ben Hur. In the program, it mentioned that he was an All-Star in the Argentine League (practically everyone on the NT not in Europe was an Argentine All-Star), and he looked the part. His problem now, I think, is age, not skill.

Alermac, I have never believed that a player is "too short" for any position. If they play well at any position, it doesn't matter how tall they are. I think that's a mistake so many managers make. A good example is Malik Rose in the NBA, one of my favorite players. He played 7 or 8 years for San Antonio and won 2 NBA titles as a PF, even though he is "only" 6'7". I suppose the best example of such a player is Charles Barkley, who is what, 6'4"? And Bill Russell was 6'9". It's just that some managers see those physical statistics as being the key. If a player is not a certain height, they just won't put them in the game. It's a shame, if you ask me. So I think Gutierrez could play in the NBA. He certainly has done well against NBA players in FIBA games.

I have never believed that a player is "too short" for any position.
The problem is, those NBA PF's who are short and good enough (like Malik Rose or Paul Millsap) are guys who have great energy, are very quick and powerful, and usually great rebounders. Gutiérrez has one big problem: he is too slow for that. He could play well in an important European league, however.

PS: an interesting fact about Leo Gutiérrez is that, after Indianapolis 2002, he played for a few months in Colombia, since he didn't find a job in Europe because he doesn't have EU citizenship and it was a year when Argentinean LNB salaries were too low because of the December 2001 crisis.

PG Agustín Carabajal 16 pts - 6 assists - 3 setals
Ben Hur Rafaela 68
PF Durelle Brown 22 pts - 7/11 2P - 7 rebs

-----------------------------------------------------------------

El Nacional Monte Hermoso cut Michael Peeples, replaced him with 34 year old G/F William "Junnie" Sanders who already played 4 LNB seasons and is known as a good scorer.

Great work Alermac :)

Atenas lost its fifth consecutive game, something needs to change and I believe that something is going to be Coach Ligorria... The Good thing about last weekend games was the debut in the 2007/08 season of 17yearolder 2.07 Pablo Orlietti, taking over Mauro Bulchi garbage minutes

What's happened to Ben Hur? They were a great team. Now they've lost quite a few games. Do the have some injured players or something? Personally, I think they could find better imports than Battle and Brown.

Ben Hur is playing with a very youth team, due to budget problems if i'm not wrong. Like you said they were one of the best team in LNB recent history with Leo Gutierrez, Diego Garcia as stars and Lamas as coach. Anyway they have some very promising youths.

In others news Atenas de Cordoba the most important team in Argentinian Basketball history has lost its sixth straight game which is the worst start ever for the team. Coach Ligorria resigned and Carlos "Caco" Bualo is now the new coach.

As Jokinen said, financial problems led to BH's fall from greatness. After the 05/06 season they lost their whole starting five (Legaria, García, Stanton, Gutiérrez and Osborne) and replaced them with cheaper players and promising young players recruited by Julio Lamas. That new team reached LNB quarters and LSB semis. And now they gave more minutes to their kids (Machuca and Lockett especially)

-Ariel Eslava signed in Gimnasia, which released Chris Jackson.
-Atenas replaced coach Ligorria with Carlos Bualò (LSB 2007 champion with Libertad)
-Quilmes signed Antwon Hall.

That's a pathetic situation. I feel sorry for Ben Hur's fans. I'm surprised that they have financial problems because I think Ben Hur doesn't have a soccer team, so they don't have to waste money there.

alermac

Actually, Ben Hur has a soccer team playing in Argentinean second division league, but the problems don't come from there. Ben Hur, like many clubs from that area, is not just a club but a mutual institution that provides health care, social security and basic banking services for its members. A couple of years ago, the mutual went bankrupt as much of the people's savings disappeared (i think the issue is being investigated). The sports teams have survived, but the mutual was believed to be one of those teams' main sponsors.

Amazing... he is just 18 years old. and is averaging 11.3 ppg 2.2 apg and 1.2 rpg in 25.9 mpg, right now I don't remember another 18 yearolder playing like that in the recent years.

Edit:I have to name Nicolas Aguirre who played with Machuca for the U19 NT in the last U19 WC as another great surprise in this 2007/08 season. Aguirre is averdaging 11.7 ppg 2.1 rpg 1.9 apg and 1.9 spg in 25.2. He is 19 Yold though

I can't remember any 18 or 19 year olds with such numbers in LNB since Manu Ginóbili, Nocioni, Scola or Jasen...

Other news:
-Belgrano released Tim Jones and Gabriel Domínguez; signed local idol Carlos Colla (41 years old) and Senegalese center Ya Ya Dia.
-Gimnasia signed center Anthony Knox.

-Belgrano released Tim Jones and Gabriel Domínguez; signed local idol Carlos Colla (41 years old) and Senegalese center Ya Ya Dia. Ya Ya Dia played at the University of Georgetown, the great "farm of centers," which produced NBA centers like Patrick Ewing, Dikembe Mutombo, Michael Sweetney, Othella Harrington, Alonzo Mourning and Ruben Boumtje-Boumtje. Unfortunately, Ya Ya Dia never played got to the level of those other players, but he is nevertheless very talented. He's a bigtime shot-blocker and rebounder, just like those other Georgetown players.

Ya Ya Dia has played in all over the world, most recently in Mexico. He's also played in Turkey, Israel, Uruguay, Italy, Jordan, Australia, the US, and Russia. This is actually his third time in Argentina: in '98 he played for Regatas San Nicolas, and in '01 he played for Quilmes Mar del Plata.

It looks like we've another star on the rise in Machuca.

So, here is the question: did even Manu and Scola get those kinds of numbers when they were 18?

I don't believe they did. If I'm not wrong Manu averaged around 20 ppg when he was 20 years old, but not at 18, acctually I don't believe he got much playing time at 18 and about Scola, he left to Europe at 17 years old, I'm not sure about Nocioni or Herrmann. I'll try to get more data, since this is a interesting question.
Anyway it was a lot harder to get playing time for a kid back then, 10 years ago, than now so offcourse we are not saying that Machuca will be as good as Manu, but he certainly could develop into a very good player, he is very promising

Thanks for the info, Matt. He's also a big player on Senegal's national team, but he didn't play in the most recent African Championships.

Outside of the NBA, the LNB and BSN are the two best leagues in the Americas, so he's playing against some very tough competition.

(If Mexico had just one major league, I would say they're in that category, but Mexican talent is dilluted in five different leagues, none of which are great).

Nocioni was the sixth man of the year in 98/99 at 19, playing for Independiente and starring in the Finals his team lost 4-3.

At 18, Herrmann played about 10 mpg and scored 3 ppg, but at 19 he was already scoring 13 ppg for Olimpia.

Did Ya Ya Dia play?

Man, Ben Hur can't buy a victory. I'm glad to see Boca playing well with a mostly Argentine squad. It's good that Leo Guitierrez is still putting up numbers. I'm a big fan of his.

Ya Ya Dia started at center scored 8 points.

And speaking of Leo Gutiérrez, on Wednesday he scored 7/11 threes in Boca's 95-74 win over Obras.

But the biggest game was Quilmes win over Peñarol, 72-70 with big performances by Nicolás Aguirre (again) and Antonio Reynolds-Dean, who scored the winning two.

Obras Sanitarias: Fernando Titarelli 7, Gabriel Cocha (x) 10, Christopher Jeffries 20, Lázaro Borrell 19, Tyler Field 6 (fi); Fernando Calvi 6, Daniel Chaher 0, Emilio Olsson 2, Cristian Cortés 0, Sergio Ravina 4, Emanuel Arévalo 0.
Boca Juniors: Luis Cequeira 12, Gustavo Oroná 12, Ryan Carroll 6, Leonardo Gutiérrez 25, Alejandro Alloatti 9 (fi); Fernando Funes 8, Juan Sartorelli 14, Leonel Schattmann 5, Federico Aguerre 4, Julián Aprea 0, Juan Orellano 0.

Peñarol: Sebastián Rodríguez 11, Byron Wilson 9, Marcos Mata (x) 2, Alejandro Diez 9, Román González 28 (fi); Lucas Picarelli 1, Jervaughn Scales 2, Cedric Moodie 8, Jason Osborne 0.
Quilmes: Hernando Salles 11, Eduardo Villares 9, Antown Hall 6, Antonio Reynolds 17, Ezequiel Dentis 0 (fi); Diego Romero 9, Nicolás Aguirre 15, Maximiliano Maciel 5, Selem Safar 0.

El Nacional also beat Gimnasia 86-68.

El Nacional: Mariano Castets 11, Patricio Rodríguez 11, Federico Ferrini 8, Djibril Kanté 23, Cristian Amicucci 12 (fi); Pablo Barrios 5, William Sanders 9, Sebastián Farías 4, Fabián Sahdi 3, Lucas Pérez 0.
Gimnasia: Sebastián Festa 5, Zachary Ingles 11, Facundo Venturini 0, Diego Prego 19, Anthony Knox 12 (fi); Matías Fioretti 5, Ariel Eslava 9, Bruno Ingratta (x) 4, David Oviedo 0, José Alessio 0, Federico Mansilla 3.

I had too much work these days XD

-Estudiantes released PG Lawrence Wallace, replaced him with C Robert Bryant who played in Portugal and Turkey.

Wow, it'll be weird to imagine the LNB without Pittman. He's been playing very well since 2000 or so. What drug was he doping?
Marijuana, and his second suspension. He did 3 months in 2005, when playing for Atenas.

Pittman had been playing every year in Argentina since 1998, always scoring plenty.

I haven't updated this in a loooong time...

6 games to go in the Regular season:

54 Libertad
49,5 Regatas
49 Obras
49 Boca
48,5 El Nacional
48 Atenas
47,5 Quimsa
46,5 Peñarol (two games pending, winning them would take them to 50,5)
45 Quilmes
44 Sionista
44 Gimnasia
43,5 Ben Hur
43,5 Belgrano
43 Central Entrerriano
41,5 Estudiantes (one game pending)
40,5 Independiente (one game pending)

A few news:

-Lots of players were signed: the most notable ones are Gaby Fernández in Boca Juniors, and Laron Profit in Libertad.

-Ben Hur got a big sponsor that helped them save their season financially, and the team begun climbing the standings. Gimnasia also improved much after the arrivals of Jimmy Boston and (again) Charles Jones.

-Atenas climbed by winning 15 consecutive home games.

Regular season: two games to go.

1) 60 Libertad
2) 56 Boca
3) 54,5 Regatas (one game pending)
4) 54,5 El Nacional
5) 54 Atenas
6) 53,5 Peñarol (one game pending)
7) 53,5 Quimsa
8) 53 Obras

13) 48,5 Independiente
14) 48 Central Entrerriano
15) 47,5 Estudiantes (one game pending)
16) 46,5 Belgrano (one game pending)

-It's 2 pts for the win and 1 pt for the loss, so Peñarol and Estudiantes are actually 5th and 14th.

-Belgrano is virtually doomed to relegation. Central will have to win at least one game this weekend to climb to the heavenly 14th spot.

-Independiente had a big week, beating Peñarol and El Nacional on the road.

-There will be a BIG fight for the 3rd and 4th spots, which qualify to quarterfinals.

-Libertad clinched the top seed.

It was a sad regular-season ending for the League. Before explaining what happened, there are the final standings:

1) 63 Libertad
2) 60 Boca
3) 59,5 Regatas
4) 58,5 Peñarol
5) 57,5 El Nacional
6) 57 Atenas
7) 56,5 Quimsa
8) 56 Obras
9) 55 Sionista
10) 54 Gimnasia
11) 53 Quilmes
12) 52,5 Ben Hur
13) 51,5 Estudiantes
14) 51,5 Independiente
15) 51,5 Belgrano -relegated-
16) 50,5 Central Entrerriano -relegated-

The sad part happened Sunday, during the last games. Independiente hosted Estudiantes, Ben Hur hosted Libertad and Belgrano hosted Central.

Estudiantes was beating Independiente by 13 with 3:00 left. With that loss, Independiente would have been relegated instead of Belgrano. Suddenly the lights went out for 10 minutes, and play was resumed after the other two games were finished.

Then Belgrano had already beaten Central, and Ben Hur beaten Libertad. Thus meaning that Estudiantes had no chance of reaching the 12th playoff spot, neither of being relegated (which would have happened had Central beaten Belgrano).

Estudiantes' coach pulled his starters off, and Independiente came back to win it in overtime. These two attitudes (the suspicious blackout and the suspicious player changes) have generated a major scandal, leading to Belgrano going to a Federal Court to suspend the playoffs or at least get compensation for what happened. Independiente and Estudiantes both claim those were honest facts, not some sort of arrangement. For now, League president said he'll propose that next year's relegations are decided on playoffs.

For now, first playoff round awaits: 5th vs 12th, 6th vs 11th, 7 vs 10th and 8 vs 10th, while top four teams advance to quartefinals.

Libertad is now the first finalist, after sweeping Peñarol 3-0, led by Robert Battle and Laron Profit (who apparently waited until the playoffs to explode).

Quimsa is up 2-0 against Obras, could become the other finalist today.

Lanús (from the south side of Buenos Aires) gained the promotion to Liga A, for the first time ever. The team gained a lot after Wendell Gibson's arrival, undoubtedly the playoffs MVP.

argentinean league jerseys? Probably nowhere outside each team's city...

national team jerseys? Since Li Ning took over the uniforms, there is absolutely no store with current jerseys on sale. You can still find Topper uniforms in Argentinean stores though, but i don't know if they'll ship it to Europe.
