After a long Asian tour with the national team, Roy Samaha is back in Lebanon. But not for long.
The 22-year-old center will leave for Italy on Friday, August 9, 2007 after a mere three-day break from basketball.
Samaha will head to the scenic town of Norcia to join the French ProA team, Paris-Levallois for training camp.
“I’m very excited about it. It’s a great opportunity,” Samaha said. “The timing couldn’t be better. I am looking forward to it and hopefully, with the European experience, some doors will open for me.”
Samaha might be a little anxious about leaving home to join a foreign team for the first time, but he will be happy to see a certain familiar face.
“Coach Elias Zouros… he’s one of the best coaches that ever came to Lebanon,” Samaha said. “I wish he stayed longer.”
Samaha played under the Greek coach in the 2003-2004 season. Together, they won the Lebanese league championship and the Asian Cup with Sagesse.
Samaha’s advantage in an otherwise alien environment is the fact that he is familiar with Zouros’ coaching style.
“I know what he wants and looks for in a player, so that helps a lot,” the center said.
Samaha’s contract with Lebanese league runner-ups Blue Stars has ended, thus making him a free agent.
Samaha, who also carries a French passport, is aiming at a spot on the Paris-Levallois roster, where he will be considered a local.
