Orlando Magic to sign Polish draft pick Marcin Gortat

The Orlando Magic's Marcin Gortat goes up for a layup in front of the New Jersey Nets' Josh Davis during their teams' opening game in the 2007 Pepsi Pro Summer League at the RDV Sportsplex in Maitland on July 9, 2007.

The Orlando Magic have decided to sign center Marcin Gortat, a second-round draft pick in 2005 who has played the last two seasons in Europe.

Gortat, who played well on the Magic's Summer League team earlier this month, would become just the third player from Poland to ever play in the NBA.

Gortat, 23, is a 6-foot-11, 240-pound center who is expected to provide depth in the frontcourt and ease the loss of free agent Darko Milicic, who left the Magic recently to sign with the Memphis Grizzlies.

In five Summer League games, Gortat averaged 10 points, 6.8 rebounds and 3.2 blocks. He has played the past two seasons in Germany, along with playing for the Polish National team.

He originally was a second-round pick by Phoenix, then traded to the Magic on draft night of 2005.

"We've decided to keep him here instead of sending him back to Europe again," Magic General Manager Otis Smith said. "We think he'll develop faster here, and we want to see what he can do for us. We think he can become an NBA player."

The Magic also have decided to keep power forward James Augustine for a second season and bring him to training camp. They have an option to void at least part of the second year of his contract if they waived him by Aug. 1, but they have decided against exercising that option. He was a second-round pick in 2006 out of Illinois.

Trybanski is so poor - wooden player, but I think that Gortat will be better then Lampe and spent more minutes in game :) Orlando wait for player under basket like Gortat, and they made great move when they sign contract with Marcin :)

i can see i m the only fan of trybanski:D i think is not great talented and not nba plyer but i think for a medium low euroleague level is good,he doesn t give so many points, even if he shotted with 56% last year, but he is a good defender and was best shot blocker of d leaugue, hope with peristeri he will improve his carreer:) .about lampe he is definetly one of my favourite player and i m really glad in russia he is showing his skills even if he didn t has so many minutes in game last year,i really hoped my team bought him last year but they prefered the horrible mavrokefalidis:( .philip can you tell me what's wrong with him with nt?i knew that at begining he was on list but after disappeared,i searched some infos but only found in polish and didn t understand:D .about gortat, lets cross the finger but i think will be difficult:rolleyes:

Magic Assign Marcin Gortat To Anaheim Arsenal

Anaheim, Calif., November 20, 2007 – The Orlando Magic today announced the assignment of rookie Marcin Gortat (MAR-chin GOR-tat) to the Anaheim Arsenal, their D-League affiliate. A native of Poland, the 7-foot 240 pound center-forward was drafted in the second round of the 2005 NBA Draft by the Phoenix Suns with the 57th overall selection. His rights were acquired by Orlando on draft night (June 28, 2005) in exchange for cash considerations.

Hello man :) Lampe play great basket in Russia, and he will propably try to comesback to the NBA, but Trybanski is so poor that he didnt have any chances - just look where he play now, and how much points he scored (1.2 per game?). Any other prospects ... I will write about they later :) best regards !!!

Gortat started and had his first big minutes (30) against the Jazz and managed 4 points, 4 rebounds, 4 blocks and 1 steal.

First big game for Gortat with a double-double: 16 pts + 13 rebs + 3 blocks as the Magic beat the Warriors.

14 pts + 7 rebs off the bench in 19 minutes. Magic won.

He's great, he's really great !!!:) Gortat is a good, solid, big player. He might be averaging only 3.4 points and 4.2 rebounds in about 10 minutes per game, but he has a great NBA body. He also seems to enjoy "pounding" with the big guys by the basket, which means he might be a contributor for many years in the NBA.

Another great game for Gortat.

As starting center he made in 40:18 min (team leader), 11 pts, 15 reb (team leader), 2 ast, 4 stl (team leader), 29 +/- (team leader).

Magic won series 4-2. Without Dwight Howard and Courtney Lee in the final game.

That Gortat's 4th career game as starter and 6th career double-double.

SVG for the second time with Gortat in S5 said that it is the best win he ever had.

Just another prove that holding him with Dwight Howard in one team is just a big waste.

Marcin Gortat vs. LeBron James @ Game 3 Playoff 2009:

Marcin Gortat getting it done for the Orlando Magic

Kyle Hightower | Sentinel Staff Writer
May 27, 2009

The Cleveland Cavaliers entered their Eastern Conference finals series with Orlando believing that if they could somehow manage to get Magic Dwight Howard in foul trouble, they would be in pretty good shape.

Simple logic, really. Get the big man off the floor and their star, LeBron James, would be free to roam free.

The Cavs forgot about Marcin Gortat.

Heading into Tuesday's Game 4, Gortat had provided everything the Magic wanted and more from their backup center.

With the confidence he already was riding after starting for Howard in Game 6of the Magic's first round series win over Philadelphia, Gortat continues to add sparkle to what has already been a jewel second season.

"It's been his year, really," Coach Stan Van Gundy said of Gortat, who is a restricted free agent after this season. "He's been good and consistent. And not only does he have a lot of confidence, but we as coaches and his teammates have great confidence in our ability to play with him."

A project when he arrived in Orlando, Gortat rebounded from what he admits was a "bad training camp" to find his groove during the regular season. It included playing exceptionally well in back-to-back starts for an injured Howard in mid-December.

"I went through a lot of things this year," he said. "The first 20 games I was sitting on the bench and just praying for the chance. And finally in [Utah, Golden State], everything started. ... And I believe I can help the team even more."

His numbers haven't been staggering in the playoffs. Entering Game 4 Tuesday Gortat was averaging 3.7 points and 3.3 rebounds in limited minutes.

But his presence has been felt in other ways.

He had two blocks on James in Game 3 and helped the Magic hang on to the lead and the win with quality minutes after Howard got his fourth foul in the third quarter.

He finished the night with four points, five rebounds and the two rejections.

"I don't even know how to compare it," Gortat said. "It's like having an Escalade and beating a Ferrari. ... I got over 30 messages [after Game 3] and most of them were about blocking LeBron rather than winning the game. But I just look at it as it's more important to help stop LeBron from getting to the basket and getting dunks.

"After the second block he looked at me and I could read his face and it was like 'Next time I'm going to dunk on you.' So I'm waiting for that."

As to what his signature season might do for his prospects this summer and beyond, Gortat said right now he's just living in the moment.

"There's such a big pressure right now with everything is going on," he said. "I really don't know what's going to happen. Right now I'm just trying to focus on the game. And trust me, right now there is nothing else in my head except trying to block LeBron James [again]. That's the only thing I'm thinking right now."

Despite being blown out by the Lakers, Gortat got some good minutes and contributed 4 points. 8 rebounds, 4 blocks and 2 steals in 20 minutes of play.

Gortat should get a nice little contract this summer, even though he has the tackiest tattoo in the NBA (http://nba.fanhouse.com/2009/06/09/reebok-to-marcin-gortat-jordan-tattoo-wont-fly/). Gortat is an unrestricted free agent this summer. A lot of teams will take a long look at him. He's proved that he can be a good 15-20 minute back-up in the NBA...will any team let him start?

For me, he's a good back-up. His power game is fantastic, which makes him a good back-up for Howard. Unfortunately, I really don't think his skills game is that great, like Howard. I don't know. Still, he'd be nice for Cleveland to look at. :D

Gortat is restricted free agent. Stil a very small possibility of staying in Orlando.

And he can be a starter in NBA next season.

Sources told ESPN.com that the Mavericks are bringing Gortat to town to tour the area and the team's facilities after extending him an offer believed to be worth Dallas' full mid-level exception -- which could translate to a five-year deal starting at roughly $5.6 million -- in hopes of dissuading the Orlando Magic from matching the offer.

It means $5,6 million per year, right?

03-13-2010, 09:19 PM
Not that this has anything to do with Gortat or Polish basketball, but Lietuvos Rytas' Aussie center Aron Baynes will be in the Lithuanian League dunk contest. I doubt he can do something of Gortat's caliber shown in the last vid... :)

04-15-2010, 11:41 AM
Gortat had a great final game. He scored 16 points, making 5-6 (two pointers) and 6-6 (free throws). He also had 6 rebounds in 15 minutes of playing time.

He finishes the regular season with 3.6 points, 4.2 rebounds in about 13 minutes of playing time per game. He shot 53% from the field.

In the play-offs, the emphasis turns toward defense and big men, and Gortat is a pretty good defender. If Cleveland and Orlando play, I expect to see him a lot.

Marcin Gortat has a Flickr photo page (http://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/). It's really fun to look through. He's got some great pictures of his teammates and they seem to be having. I guess he's a big sports car fan.

Marcin Gortat wants bigger role, but Orlando Magic not interested - Oct 7, 2010 (by Eurobasket News)
At the EuroBasket qualifying tournament in August, few big men were more dominant than Poland's Marcin Gortat (213-C-84).

He led the tournament in field-goal percentage. He played almost every minute. He had 29 points against Belgium. 23 against Bulgaria.

When playing for Poland, Gortat is the man. His teammates look to him almost every trip down the court, feeding him the ball near the hoop and out near the perimeter. Jumpers, post-ups, cuts off the pick and roll; Gortat shows off a versatile offensive repertoire when playing for his home country.

Then Gortat returns to Orlando, where his role is simple: rebound, defend and run the floor. Stuck backing up the league's best center, few plays are called for Gortat. On offense, he's little more than a pick-setter and boards-crasher.

When Gortat does try to showcase his offensive game with the Magic, he gets talked to by the coaching staff.

And that adjustment has not been easy for the 26-year-old big man.

'There are days when I'm about to explode and just say a couple of things or go to the coach and tell him what I want to do,' Gortat said. 'I feel like I'm one of the guys who has to sacrifice a lot to adjust to this team. I can tell you that it's not easy.'

The Orlando Magic, meanwhile, are not overly concerned about Gortat's desire to play more offense. During the team's 3 1/2- hour meeting last Monday, his teammates told him they wanted him to focus on his role of defending, rebounding and running the floor.

They weren't interested in any offensive flash from Dwight Howard's backup.

'A lot of players feel that they can do more than what everybody's asking them to do,' Howard said. 'But you've gotta know your role. Teams that win championships, everybody knows their role.'

After the first week of training camp, coach Stan Van Gundy was concerned about Gortat's focus on his role.

He finished last among Orlando's big men in rebounding and failed to register a block in the team's four scrimmages last week. And Gortat shot just 36 percent from the field among the worst on the team. In Tuesday night's preseason opener, however, Gorat scored 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting and grabbed 10 rebounds in a little more than 20 minutes.

'I think that he's a guy who has a lot of trouble accepting his role,' Van Gundy said. 'He really wants to be more of an offensive player. I'm not discouraging that. But he needs to focus on defending and rebounding and running the floor. He needs to get back to that.

'Those are the things he does well, and he has not done a good job of that.'

The Dallas Mavericks made Gortat an offer worth about $34 million over 5 years last summer. In Dallas, Gortat would be the starter alongside forwards Dirk Nowitzki and Shawn Marion. He'd be the leading big man on a Western Conference contender.

Somewhat surprisingly, Orlando matched the offer. At the time many thought Gortat was simply long-term trade bait, but it's looking more and more as if the Magic intend to keep him around as Howard insurance.

Gortat isn't unhappy in Orlando he likes his teammates, the city and the legitimate possibility of a championship but the thought of playing a bigger role somewhere else rarely leaves his mind.

'I'm entering my prime years,' Gortat said. 'I want to keep winning, but I also want to play. So I hope I'm going to have both those things.'

Gortat is generally a good soldier. It's not as if he walks around the Magic facilities with a chip on his shoulder. He's always laughing and joking with his teammates; he's a pleasant guy to be around.

Van Gundy likes him, saying 'I have great faith in him. He's a smart guy, he plays hard, he knows what he's doing and he fits well with us.'

Gortat, though, won't see his role grow larger in Orlando anytime soon. His role, now and in the future, is clear: rebound, defend and run the floor.

'I'm interested in trying to do what's best for our team,' Van Gundy said. 'Some guys will have to accept some things role-wise; every guy out here has to accept some things role wise.'

Orlando Magic center Marcin Gortat was recently interviewed by the Orlando Sentinel on his thoughts about NBA Commissioner, David Stern's vision of a 5 Team Division in Europe carrying the NBA Brand. Gortat was quoted:

"It just wouldn't work. Right now, the NBA has a couple of guys in the NBA from Europe and we (the league) are elite right now. We have 350 to 400 of the best players in the world, and if we're going to expand into the entire world, I think the NBA's going to lose value as the best league in the world. This is just my opinion, but we'll see."

Gortat Most Coveted (http://www.orlandosentinel.com/sports/orlando-magic/os-magic-schmitz-nba-1212-20101212,0,264304,full.column) - December 12, 2010, by Brian Schmitz, Orlando Sentinel

...Despite PF Brandon Bass' sterling play, the Magic player who still attracts more trade attention is C Marcin Gortat.

Teams call General Manager Otis Smith and ask about Gortat followed by Bass and PF Ryan Anderson.

"Teams need bigs," Smith said.

The dilemma the Magic are weighing: Is Gortat more valuable to them in the postseason or more valuable to dangle in a trade? If the Magic could pick up another scorer or perimeter defender and an inexpensive big man in a deal, why not?

I say sell.... It's not a secret that teams want Gortat. He's a big man with strength and athleticism. He's got a fantastic body for a center.

Otis Smith, the Magic GM, really wanted to keep Gortat over the summer in 2009, so he matched Dallas' 34 million dollar contract. Because Orlando already has Dwight Howard, Smith is basically paying Gortat to prevent other teams from having him.

Truth is, Gortat is valuable for the play-offs, when teams go bigger, slower, and more physical.

12-12-2010, 09:36 PM
He'd be the missing piece in Dallas imo. He really needs a bigger role and minutes, he already proved he's a quality centre.

Since being traded to the Phoenix Suns and playing with them for 6 games, Gortat is averaging 30 minutes, 10 points, 6 rebounds, 1.5 assists, 1.2 blocks and shooting 57%.

The agent of Gortat, Guy Zucker denounces the news of his client signing in Russia. Zucker said in hoopshype (http://blogs.hoopshype.com/blogs/sierra/2011/07/18/gortat-report-denied/):

“I can assure you that the story claiming that he has reached an agreement with Spartak St. Petersburg of Russia is incorrect. While I have a lot of respect for Spartak St. Petersburg and its GM, Alex Karvanen, Gortat has not signed with or reached an agreement with Spartak St. Petersburg or any club whatsoever.”

it's a pity he didn't play in national team lately, Poland would have better chance of winning with him.

Suns center Marcin Gortat is not saying that he does not believe he deserved to be an All-Star. He is just saying he did not expect to be.

"I need a minimum of two years to be considered a true center who is dominating the game and putting up good numbers," Gortat said. "I believe I can reach up to the level of (All-Star center picks) Andrew Bynum and Marc Gasol, definitely. It is just a question of working hard."

Gortat still will be in Orlando during the All-Star festivities because he has a home there and friends from Poland visiting.

Gortat's statistics were similar to Gasol's, but the coaches likely rewarded Memphis' better record, and some coaches have noted that Nash has much to do with Gortat's scoring.

Gortat said he was honored just to be on the ballot and that his only expectation was to be mentioned as a candidate.

"I will take this as motivation for the next couple years," Gortat said. "I've got to work hard. I'm 100 percent sure that if I play the way I've been playing and even better that I'm going to get selected to that. I've got to do it longer and work harder to get there. It isn't going to happen after 25 to 30 games."
