Boomers beat China in hostile environment
A television audience of over half a billion people tuned in to watch the Australia Post Boomers defeat Team China 77-66 in Foshan, China overnight.
In front of a hostile home crowd, the young Boomers team displayed maturity beyond their years to remain undefeated after the first two games of their nine-day tour, following yesterday’s win over Croatia.
“We were all over them for forty minutes,” Head Coach Brian Goorjian said.
“The atmosphere was electrifying and given that we have been together for a limited time I am just so impressed with the way these young guys are going about it.
“The guys didn’t back off anybody. They made every possession tough for them and they are playing fearless and for each other.
“The country should be very proud about the way they are going about their business.
“We are in a country where basketball is the number one sport and played in front of a 500 million people viewing audience. It is big time here,” he said.
Perth Wildcats guard Damien Ryan scored a game high 18 points including five-of-seven three point baskets to lead the Boomers while Sydney King Mark Worthington contributed 16 points and 20-year-old Brisbane Bullets guard Adam Gibson added 7 points in support.
After arriving at the court under police escort, an energetic Boomers started the game with all guns blazing and on top of strong defensive reads, opened up a solid 21-14 quarter time lead.
The Boomers continued to play with tenacity and desperation at both ends of the court and extended their lead early to 43-28 by halftime, winning the second quarter 19-14.
After the Boomers pushed the lead to over 20 points early in the third term, a vocal home crowd lifted the Team China who surged late to win the quarter 21-16 and trail 59-49.
The Boomers staved off a number of runs from Team China in the fourth quarter, with the highlight being Worthington’s dunk over former NBA star Whang Zhi Zhi, to register the 11-point win.
There were nil injuries to report.
The Boomers play Italy at 9pm AEST tonight, Sunday June 17.
“They are a very hard working group,” Goorjian said.
“Another pleasing aspect is that we have been shooting the ball really well.
“Last night Oscar Forman was hot and tonight it was Damien Ryan,” he said.
