I BELIEVE the "Jelani McCoy is a Fil-Am" urban legend died down a long time ago.

When it first came out, I looked at a picture of McCoy and concluded that the story may have been fueled by the fact that he had Chinese-looking eyes and that he lived in an area with a significant Fil-Am or Asian population.

Like what I said in another thread, PBA teams at the time (1999) were scouring the globe for their one direct-hire Fil-foreign recruit hence the fierce competition to outdo each other. It reached to the extent that any player with a Hispanic-sounding surname or even the slightest hint of Asian features would be considered.

It was Ali Peek who said that Jelani McCoy back six years ago. At that time Jelani McCoy was still playing in the NBA and did not want to play here. No one has been able to prove, though, his Filipino lineage. If he is a legit Fil-am he could be a great catch for the RP team. He is only 29 years old and can still play. There's a good chance though that he could be Filipino because he comes from the Los Angeles area.

I've heard this news during the invasion of Fil-am players in the country. that was in the year 1999 and i also read an article about jelani McCoy in the Sports weekly magazine written by Mr. Henson. According to him, he was eyeing by Ginebra to be their direct hire Fil-am. Unfortantely, McCoy already committed to play for Seattle in the NBA. Also in the same year, same experience happened to ABAP(Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines) when Brian Viloria won the Gold in the 1999 World Amateur Boxing Championship in the Flyweight division. ABAP is eyeing the services of Viloria to be part of RP boxing team that will compete in the 2000 Sydney Olympics on their quest for the elusive gold. Unfortunately, ABAP is already late. Viloria is commited to be part of the US boxing team.

“Hindi ko na inaano ‘yun (mapasama sa pool) eh,” Santos said. “Kung susumahin mo ang buhay naming mga player, ‘san ba talaga ang first priority namin, ‘di ba? Ang first priority ko, dahil dito ko nakuha lahat ng kagandahan ng buhay ko at para sa pamilya ko, ang San Miguel. Alam naman ng lahat ‘yun. Ito ang dapat kong paglingkuran.”

YES, Clark Hugh "Pep" B. Moore played for San Sebastian College. He has also seen action for Hapee in the PBL and also for the Cebuana Lhuillier version of the national team.

A very young and raw Pep first came here in 2000 to try out for the professional MBA but did not make the grade. Instead, he found his way to San Sebastian College, winning a pair of NCAA crowns along the way.

He is reportedly back in the United States.

                  McCoy

                  The Real McCoy

Jelani McCoy seems not a pure black so as Juwan Howard (see the similarity)

But they aint have any pinoy blood

The only McCoy that is Filipino is this Ex-San BEda College player Kerwin McCoy 6'4 who played back late 90's

And Since Jelani and Howard look similar we still have our own Howard

We all know Stephen Howard(Played IMport San Miguel and Sta Lucia, NBA Utah Jazz) has a Pinay Wife...lets wait if their fruit will grow 6'9 or more and we will have our own Howard

This was a topic ages ago but If he really is Fil-Am someone from the SBP should have talked to him.I'm not sure If he is Fil-am or he just doesn't want to play in/for the Philippines.

                            J McCoy is not Pinoy

He went to St Augustine, a catholic high school in San Diego and was a star and in the papers all the time. With 200,000+ Filipino/Filipino Americans in San Diego this would have been big news or someone would have claimed him. I remember him well, he is not even part Pinoy. He also has the rep of being a head case, hence the short NBA career given his enormous talent.
