philippines team does not have any naturalized player. we have players who have dual citizenship. these players are recognized as philippines citizens by the philippines government as they have proven that their parents or grandparents were philippunes citizens at the time of their birth.

manu ginobili has dual citizeship also. he plays for argentina but at the same time he also has an italian passport. peja stojakovic also has dual citizenship. one is for serbia and the other one I can't remember, maybe italy, am not sure but definitely european.

hope that settles it.

yeah, peja stojakovic holds dual citizenship of both Serbia and Greece. . .

TOKUSHIMA, Japan (AFP) - Jordan pulled off a stunning victory over four-time defending champions China 78-65 on the opening day of the Asian men's basketball championship on Saturday.

Rasheim Wright became the hero of his side, scoring 10 two-pointers and one three-pointer as well as eight free throws for a total of 31 points, while Zaid Alkhas also scored 22 points.

The Chinese men, who have dominated the continent since 1975 winning a total of 14 championships, once took a 23-17 lead in the second quarter, but Jordan soon overcame the deficit to lead 35-30 at half time before enlarging the lead.

Sixteen countries were divided into four groups in the preliminary round and top two from each group will advance to the second stage.

The winners of the tournament will qualify for the Beijing Olympics next year.

In case Olympic hosts China win, the second team will qualify, while top two except China and the champions will be eligible for the final qualifying round in July next year.

In other matches, Qatar defeated India 106-49 and Kazakhstan downed Indonesia 107-53 in Group C, while two-time former champions South Korea outclassed Hong Kong 107-53.

it's just the breaks of the game, iran played well in the 1st and 3rd quarter. while the RP starters played so slappy in offense and defense. it's the second stringers that give hope to RP, plus the injuries on seigle, asi, and jimmy. and the fouling out of dondon, norwood, and caguiao. not to mention that freaking technical foul slap by the referees on RP bench. it's just not this lost is a wake up call for the Philippines, the game tomorrow is a must win situation. they just have to believe that they can do it...that's what kerby showed today. he never give up, thus showing the heart of a Filipino. hope this lost gives them the motivation and remember that they already gave so many sacrifices for them to give up now. the Filipino people is counting on all of you, never give up and believe!!!

i just hope jordan will beat this iranian team tomorrow.

Iran MUST beat Jordan to avoid a possible triple tie at 2-1 by Jordan, RP and Iran. Iran then must beat China and RP wins thier last 2 assignments. I dont like the idea of the quotient system because Team Pilipinas wins on close games.

IRAN 3-0
RP 2-1
JOR 1-2
CHN 0-3

I believe this is the best possible scenario for Team Pilipinas to advance to the next round.

it was really an OFF for the team. i dunno if someone put spells on our team cus heck, lotsa shots getting in went out(count those, story wuda changed). that was really weird. weird as f*ck damnit!! i cudnt imagine Seigle, Mark C, Norwood, Honti malfunctioning. we had a lot of TOs as if the ball had grease. another blackeye is the injury of Asi. i dunno if alapag and seigle have one too. Wtf is this day for our team? i guess the father of all bad breaks visited the team earlier.

thank Pennisi, Kerby,and jimmy who were fighting hard tho the team was wounded.we cuda saved ourselves but damn! i sh!t my pants when that Technical foul was called(i think even Quinitio.lol. he was rle freakin out); it killed the momentum. =(

anyhow, remember Lebanon's opening day in Manila Invtnls??they lost. they got into finals tho. there's still life RP! we're still breathing!!

it was really a freaking game for RP team
everybody was so tense and tentative
it seemed that we're not mentally prepared
im also surprised seigle wasnt effective
i think coach chot should have let seigle post-up on offense more often

chot has his share for this crazy thing
here's my observations:

1) coach reyes has a horrible rotation of players

why did reyes benched kelly williams for a long time?
i think williams was summoned back into the court only until asi got injured in the 4th quarter
he's very good for the team
he's aggressive, a hustle player and a high flyer

next, when alapag got injured in crunchtime, he replaced him with renren ritualo which i already think was very wrong bec. that guy cant play defense, period. here's what happened during his stint on the court:

he was late in the defensive rotation that cause us a 3 pointer by iran
then he gave up 2 useless fouls that kills the momentum of the team
sending iranians in the line to shoot free-throws instead of executing their offense in a pressure-packed situation
i think hontiveros should be there instead of ritualo since hontiveros plays defense, can shoot 3's, and provides leadership

2) but all in all, what cause us the game is the STUPIDITY of coach reyes
in that crucial situation, you would not expect the coach to be the one to lose his cool
his stupidity cause us the game and the golden oppurtunity to get to the olympics

now, we need iran to finished undefeated
and try to beat china and jordan
it gets harder for us now

This is a very young and very weak Chinese Team B but it does have height and is dependent on it not skills or experience. I see Team B losing to Iran because the height differential is not so great. But beating the Philippines because of the massive height advantage.

So this is the final standings:

Jordan 3-0
Iran 2-1
China 1-2
RP 0-3

dude i dont agree with no.2 refs dont call technical foul outright unless its reasonable. chot just complained just like any other coaches. it would be understandable if a player is the one who complains.

warning is just a sign of courtesy and a reminder before coaches' nagging gets into the referee's skin or somehow overboard..

i think its nicer hahaha....

i don't see RP losing to china. well if that happens, we better kiss our hopes of getting a slot for an olympic berth goodbye. it's a must win situation for the Philippines. i think it's a win over the other.

jordan - 2-1
PILIPINAS - 2-1
china - 1-2
iran - 1-2

It appears China couldnít care less about winning in Tokushima with an Olympic ticket to Beijing a sure thing as host nation.

At the recent Manila Invitationals, the Tokushima-bound Chinese squad finished fourth and last. There were rumors that coach Adijan Chang Bin would recruit at least three players from Chinaís A team to reinforce the squad but in the end, only 6-5 Chen Lei was brought in to replace Zhang Qingpeng.

Curiously, Adijan took out one of his four original picks from Chinaís 22-man national pool. Zhangís dismissal left only Wang Yong, Han Shuo and Yang Ming from the pool in Chinaís selection for Tokushima.

Chinaís A team is playing in the Stankovic Cup while Adijanís squad is trying to keep head above water in the Olympic qualifiers.

Chinaís vulnerability was evident in its opening day 78-65 loss to Jordan in Tokushima yesterday. The Philippines plays China today in a crucial match that could determine the second team from Group A to advance to the quarterfinals.

Without Yao Ming, China is just an ordinary team.

* * *

The only naturalized players in Tokushima rosters are Lebanonís Joe Vogel of Colorado State and Jordanís Rasheim Wright of District of Columbia.

Vogel, 33, was drafted by the Seattle SuperSonics in the 1996 NBA draft. He played as an import in Turkey, Japan and Saudi Arabia before taking out Lebanese citizenship in time to lead Lebanon to second place in the FIBA-Asia Championships in 2001. The 6-11 center has represented Lebanon in the last two World Championships.

Wright, 26, has guaranteed an Olympic ticket for Jordan.

A player whom Jordan tried to smuggle into Tokushima has been disqualified. Seven-foot center Dshmal Schoetz (renamed Maitah) averaged 6.2 points and 4.1 rebounds for Jordanís title squad in the recent Jones Cup where the MVP was Wright.

But it was discovered that Schoetz played for Germanyís under-18 national squad in 1998. Under FIBA rules, a player may see action for only one national team in his lifetime. So if Schoetz ever hopes to play in a FIBA tournament again, itíll be only for Germany.

IN OTHER NEWS......

Iran shocked South Korea, 89-75, and edged Japan, 69-64, to end a 55-year absence from the semifinals of the Asian Games in Doha last year. Iran lost to Qatar in the semifinals and settled for the bronze by crushing Jordan, 84-78.

Iranís 6-6 forward Samad Bahrami was the Asian Gamesí leading scorer and heads the squad in Tokushima with brother Aydin who is 6-7.

Iranís coach is Serbian Rejko Toroman who was an assistant coach of the Yugoslavian national team with head coaching experience in the Hungarian and Dutch leagues.

in the other hand, a 2-1 record does'nt assure Pilipinas of getting a quarters slot...we just have to wait and see how the other teams will perform. i also believe on the RP Team, but it's the players who must believe that they can do it. playing tentatively won't help. they just have to learn from this lost and move on.

Iran is rle underrated. theyre silent beasts. i think theyre rle good at shutting down perimeter plays from teams that rely on it. Sokorea, japan, RP play very similar.. and they all have ended up victims by Iran. that's their specialty. anyway, i guess that team is kindof having problems on teams like Jordan,qatar,lebanon

Karim don't you think our coach is very bad ? We owned the game eventhough we have no system,no coaching at all ,and our players not themself as usual,,,plus as you said some mistakes with referees calls, and God help whoever plays Japan in such "surroundings" though I put the biggest blame on the coach who didn't rest Fadi against kuwait when were winning b y 42 pts !:eek: dunno what happened in the 4th simply BAD COACH ! we should not collapse now we must continue maybe we can beat Qatar and winner of group A Iran or Jordan and Taiwan...

We have no good guards in the world fiba.
But in asian our guards are not bad.
We have many good veteran PG in CBA.
But the aim of team B is to afford some potential player to team A
I don't oppose to take Yangming and hanshuo in this team,they are some nice player.But we still need a good PG who have more experience.

Plus,Hansuo play MVP level with Chen Jianghua in the U17 asian champion last year in which tournament China U17 win average 40points towards all opponents.

well, the "duh" word is really irritating but maybe he meant no harm by that, its just an expression. btw, there's this anti-Filipino Chinese forum member named BigFatPandaKotngTae who said that the Chinese who was absorbed by the Lakers from the recently concluded NBA draft was Sun Yue - a 6'9" point guard. Imagine a Marlou Aquino playing like a PG, lol. I don't know if its true or what, maybe some details were true and some were overrated, I doubt some of it because it came from a Pancit Cantonese bragster. :D peace to everyone here, let cool heads prevail, panalo naman RP today e :D

yah. when some people here always say "China's got poor ballhandlers, all we need is trap them." that to me says they havent been watching a lot of Asian basketball for a long time. Theyre still stuck in the 1980s, where Chinese guards were still pretty crude and basic. But today, every starting pointguard on any of the ACTUAL national teams in the FIBA ASIA tournament (not team B) is at least at par, ballhandling skills-wise, to any starting pointguard in the PBA today.

TOKUSHIMA (FIBA Asia Championship) - Iran became the first survivor from the 'Group of Death', with a Phoenician rise to beat Jordan 60-54 on Sunday. The win put Iran as the first team to enter the quarterfinal round from Group 'A', leaving Monday's encounter between Jordan and Philippines a virtual knock-out for the other berth.

Like it was in a majority of other matches of the day, Iran transformed 5-point deficit at the end of third quarter to a six point victory margin at the end of the match. Saturday hero Mahdi Kamrany's free-throw conversion following a blistering three-pointer with 03:30 left in the third quarter put Iran ahead for the first time in the match.

Along with giving Iran a 37-36 lead, those efforts also injected a sense of poise and confidence in the whole Iranian approach. There was a sudden spurt of energy and intensity in the way Iran played.

Where Iran grew in confidence, Jordan went on the decline.

"I'm really glad we are through (to the next round)," Iran coach Toroman Rijko heaved a sigh of relief. "Advancing from this group makes me feel really confident for the next stages of the Championship," the Serbian added.

"I think the pressure of playing in the toughest group got to my players in the early stages of the match. But they showed a lot of character to stage this comeback. Now I think we can beat any team in the competition."

Jordan coach Mario Palma attributed the defeat to "total lack of control in the second half."

"We made so many mistakes in the second half. My players just stopped playing the way we wanted."

Scores
Iran 60 (Hamed Ehadadi 18, Mohammad Nikkah 16, Aidin Nekkah 10) bt Jordan 54 (Enver Soobzokov 14). Quarterwise: 11-21, 21-33, 46-41

The game between the Philippine and Jordan would be decided on breaks.

TOKUSHIMA (FIBA Asia Championship) - "I just challenged my players to play all the 40 minutes like they played the last six minutes yesterday. And they rose to meet my challenge," beamed Philippines coach Vincent 'Chot' Reyes after his team caused a remarkable turnaround to down defending champions China on Sunday.

The 79-74 win, which pushed China effectively out of the contention for the Championship, left the Filipinos needing to beat Jordan on Monday to stay alive.

Having trailed all along, and faced up with a 56-57 deficit going into the final 10 minutes, Philippines fought tooth and nail and struck success.

Point guard Jim Alapag, whom Reyes called "the spiritual leader of our team", led the Philippines cause top scoring the game with 25 points along with five rebounds and three assists. Two of those assists, which Mark Anthony Caguioa converted, proved decisive for Philippines to take charge of the proceedings at the start of the fourth quarter.

China, on the other hand, looked bemused by their rivals' rally. Yi Li and Bo Wang, who otherwise had an impressive outing, went out of form and the fluency was lost. And thus the Chinese hopes of a fifth consecutive title disappeared.

"It was bound to happen, given the inexperience of the team," Chinese coach Adijiang reasoned out. "In fact, I was quite surprised they allowed us to build the lead. That way, I must say I'm satisfied with the way my team played before they fought back."
On China bowing out of the Championship race, Adijiang said, "I'm not surprised at all. When we decided to bring this team, we knew what to expect. Or to put it better, what not to expect."

Scores
Philippines 79 (Jim Alapag 25, Mark Anthony Caguioa 16, Kerby Raymondo 12) bt China 74 (Yi Li 14, Bo Wang 14, Ke Li 13). Quarterwise: 19-25, 38-49, 56-57.

I'm begining to hate this guy (Adijiang)...China Team A can be beaten, Yao Ming can be contained, no excuses for China B, they have beaten China A a couple of times. Without Chairman Yao, they're just an ordinary team. Don't deny and give credit to other countries they deserve to win. What if Yao can't play for any other reasons in Beijing, wonder if Adijiang would say the same thing.

im happy Iran topped this group , lebanon plays well against Iran cuz they can match them in terms of height but lebanon are more talented , jordan and RP are more talented than iran but iran won them cuz they have an advantage in terms of height but against lebanon , iran wont be that much taller so lebanon,s chances should be better than iran,s in winning this game.....i hope kazakhaztan can pull off an upset against qatar than it would mean it was perfect losing against Japan :p man tomorrow the RP JORDAN is gonna be great i cant wait to watch.....these 2 countries have their hearts beating so fast right now im sure......2morrow the teams are gonna be so nervous.."You can get the tension with a knife" as Hubie Brown NBA legend usually says :p ...........

I had a comments on Coach Chot.. He forced his starter players were started ice cold.. Against the Iranian National squad they shot 17% FG from 1st to 3rd quarter with Danny Seigle, Alapag, Caguioa, Norwood and Taulava had more minutes... Danny Seigle getting injured again, Caguioa's fouled out and Taulava's minor injured and then throwing their garbage to second units were observed playing and conceived they're on fire in peremptory in regulation with Raymundo, Rennisi, Helterbrand positioning at SG, Kelly Williams. Jimmy Alapags too late on fire. Why Kelly Williams didn't play more extra minutes he's really aggresive help in rebounds offensive inside and defense? A jittered Gabe Norwood. Kerby Raymundo's fighting in the paint. From trailing by 15 and then the second unit conceived came back to 1. After many starters were out and before came back from in to big deficit, Jimmy Alapag and second units guys were talking for advice and strategy intructions how effective. Coach Chot Reyes didn't thinking how effective their game... Motivation is a must. Coach Ron Jacobs knows about how effective their players during the game. He said "The players doing to win the game, coach is a loser"

look on the bright side, as u will observe it; you will notice that in SouthEast Asia, it's quite rare for teams there to be competitive in Football or Basketball.

As what I've realized, Philippines is the only country in SouthEastAsia who has a rich history in Basketball. RP is the only country in SouthEastAsia who appeared in World Competitions in Basketball. Look at Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and the rest our SEA neighbors; they haven't been to a world competition in Football nor do I think they will ever be in basketball.

This is only the beginning, let our failures lead to our success in the future. What I mean is that let it be an inspiration for us to get better. Philippines will always be the best SouthEastAsian country.

good point
i think we need a european coach
i dunno about reyes' system coz it didnt show in our games
i really believe china deserved to win against us bec. they're the better team but we're the lucky ones lol
wat i saw in our 3 games were a lot of isolation plays for alapag and caguioa

i have no doubt about our players' skills but i really think that a team which is intimidated, scared and hesitates a lot DOES NOT DESERVE EVEN A SINGLE WIN in this kind of competition

my sentiments:

pennisi- no energy on def., his slow defensive rotation gave jordan 2 if its 3 3pointers in the 2nd quarter which ignited jordan's comeback in the game

caguioa- intimidated in all his 3 games, he shoots at least 5 teardrops a game in jones cup and manila invitationals, in this tournament i think he succumbed to the pressure, i love it when he gets inside coz he get a lot of fouls

hontiveros- please dont foul a player when he already took a bad shot, ur game didnt blossom here bcoz of ur foul troubles

and lastly...

chot reyes- i really dont know wats in ur mind here in japan
in our loss to iran, u benched williams who's comeback in the game late in the 4th quarter started our last and only succesful rally against iran

in our loss to jordan u limited alapag's playing time, he's our main guy, its good for him, i think, to get his rythm early in the game
he's gonna give a lot of pressure to jordan

Coach Chot is not good entry of his players, second it's easy to gap and slow on his defensive rotation lingering, third lack of motivation, forth if his players are ice cold, jitters etc he urge of trying to get, fifth it's easy to trace our offensive passing and shooting the ball like a robot

We need the next Ron Jacobs, American or European coaches

Sidelights: Jordan coach labels grouping Ďbig jokeí

By NELSON BELTRAN
The Philippine Star

TOKUSHIMA, Japan Ė To Jordan coach Mario Palma, FIBA-Asiaís system of bracketing "is a big joke." Palma said he still canít understand why three of the top four teams in last yearís Asian Games plus the Philippines, which has always been a top contender with its professional players, allowed to slug it out in one group.

"So what you see is the four teams in this group playing with so much pressure while top seeded teams in the other brackets winning by more than 50 points," rued Palma.

"Because of the pressure, players in our group are getting hurt. The top two teams in the other group easily advanced to the quarterfinals with the luxury of keeping their top players fresh," Palma added. He cited two players in his team now injured. Heís also aware that Danny Seigle, Asi Taulava and Jimmy Alapag got hurt in the SMC-RP teamís first game against Iran.

"Now Jordan and the Philippines are playing in a knockout game. But the loser in this game is capable of winning the championship," said Palma on the eve of the match.

China topped the Doha Asia Games with Iran coming in third and Jordan fourth. Yet, they found themselves in one group with Philippines in the elimination round of the FIBA-Asia menís championship here. "Itís a joke. But I canít do anything. Iím just a coach, Iím not a politician," Palma said.

Posted as seeded teams in the four groups are China, Lebanon, Qatar and South Korea Ė the top four finishers in the 2005 FIBA-Asia championship in Qatar. The rest of the teams, except host Japan, drew their brackets. After the second round of the draw, Japan chose to join Lebanon and Kuwait in Group B.

The Philippines was drawn second to last, being the second team with the lowest world ranking here. Unfortunately, the Philippines found itself in the Group of Death with China, Iran and Jordan while Indonesia, the lowest-ranked squad, joined Qatar, Kazakhstan and India in Group C.

FIBA-Asia used to employ the inverted "S" bracketing system where the No. 1 and No. 8 teams in the previous championship are put together in one group, No. 2 and No. 7 in another group, No. 3 and No. 6 in their own bracket and No. 4 and No. 5 in the last group.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I kinda praise what Mario Palma said. He's right, FIBA's rules and regulations suck as well as their style of management.
In Doha Asian Games, many good players were injured; the country who suffered many casualties was Lebanon. What are they playing at? Putting together all the good teams, the Jordan NT weren't even happy of the win because they lost 2 of their players.
In my opinion, I think they should change the way they manage International basketball. Plus, they do really need to think about altering the rules and regulations of basketball.
NBA style is not for entertainment but was designed for Professional players. How on earth would basketball players be good if they aren't used to very long 3 pt. shots? And also 12 minutes of game play? If you notice, NBA style of basketball is far more physical and a lot harder to get used to.
They should change not only the FIBA Asia's leaders but also from other continents as well.
Everyone is saying that for this years. Especially in this forum where there are so much Chinese bragsters who thinks and feels that the China team is now the best in the world.
Most of those who brag unreasonable here at IBN are, unfortunately, filipinos.
QUESTION! :D :D :D
We all know that TEAM CHINA DIDNT WIN THIS YEARS CHAMPIONSHIP...
So, what are the chances of the FINAL FOUR teams in the OLYMPICS?...
Are four of them qualified? or will they play another QUALIFYING TOURNAMENT AGAINST AMERICANS and EUROPEANS? except for the CHAMPION which is IRAN or LEBANON...
thank God that Iran won, i dont like lebanon to win............
i started to hate lebanon when karim here is posting arrogant statements about their team.... HAHAHA :p :p :p
nice work Iran!!!
i guess, the loss will surely make them humble once again.. but lebanon is really a world-class team. they just rely on elkhatib and vogel too much..
anyway, asian basketball is unpredictable...:D
Iran was the class of the championships. only 1 loss, though big, but they won when it mattered.
congratulations to iran. their boys became men in this tournament. it will become even harder to beat them in the next championships because of the confidence that they gained here.
congratulations to lebanon. they proved their maturity and steadiness here. although, in my opinion, they lack depth in the scoring department. they rely heavily on 2 players, khatib and vogel, for scoring.
to all the teams, including my beloved RP, the race for 2010 world basketball championships has begun.
Wang Zhizhi 、Mengke Bateer and LI Nan will retire the NT in 09.Yao shouldn't join in asia level games. But you could see Zhang zhaoxu ,JI Xiang, Shang Ping 、Su Wei and so on.
How did some of these teams qualify? I know the top 5 from before (China, Korea, Iran, Japan, Qatar), the host (Japan), SEA Toruney (RP,Indonesia), and Mid-Asia (Kazakhstan and India) qualified, but I dont get/know how the other 6 or so made it. HELP!!!
