Slovenia will be represented by Alenka Gotar (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alenka_Gotar) with the song named ‘’Cvet z juga’’ (“Flower of the South”), she is a professional opera singer. In my opinion our song sucks as always. I don't like it at all. I would vote for this song Don Corleone - Bella Mia (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H9JiijaHsbI) but unfortunetly the guy didn't win. Godfather. :D

Anyway... here's the Slovenia's pick. grrr..

It is a given that Eurovisions' songs suck every year, so there is no point in me saying that this year the songs suck. But, nonetheless, I will :D

Here's Bulgaria's entry which (to its credit) has a strong traditional element. Props for the guy with the Pechalov-like mullet :D

the only problem is that noone ever listens to me:rolleyes: :p

edit: oh my god, Elaj. Could we possibly pick a worse song (I know, the answer is yes-no proof please- but it still makes me wonder :D)?
anyway I know we're loosing it on purpose year after year, since we care about all of our "western/eastern brothers" and their joy at winning the eurovision:D
the only problem is it's starting to get too obvious + the torture is not worth it... Our eurovision contenders are ussually just as bad sending Fredi Miler (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cC1OC4_NZ6A) year after year... okay not that bad but close
...as close as you can get to Fredi Miler anyway- and that's hard, you need loads of talent and extremely unfortunate circumstances for that :D

I liked the one from Bulgaria. But it doesn't have a chance in Eurovision cause the mentality of Eurovision is totaly different. First of all it took (us Greece) 50 years to understand that everybody wants english spoken lyrics. And second of all, they want "groovy modern music" and no classic or traditional sounds.

no, he actually recorded a video, put it on the net, and became the no.1 internet joke here in Slovenia, somehow he was found by some manager that arranged some concerts- of course everybody knew him till than... and the guy actually couldn't realise noone considers him as a singer and everyone are just laughing at him I felt sorry for his simplicity :D

As for the eurovision, yes most songs suck (i have actually enjoyed one or two) but i love the voting process( and to see greeks bitching about how the slavs stick together in voting while greece always gets 12 points from cyprus no matter what:D :D )

Unfortunately I fell asleep before the Bulgarian song started so I couldn't hear it but I heard good comments after.Generally Eurovision wants "modern" music but Serbia and Bosnia have dared 2 send more traditional songs lately(which I liked both) and did very well. After last year's result that a heavy metal(or should I say hard rock?) song won it's time 4 r'n'b!!!Any country that has a rap song has my support this year! After all the whole contest is just a show that has little 2 do with music...

Eurovision lost all meaning in my eyes with the change in voting system, and consequently, Turkey's getting the 1st place (2003 or 2004). Some people celebrated Sertap Erener's winner, but I hated it, and I hated the singer more since she started behaving as if she were a national heroine. What a retarded heroine!

The only Turkish song that I liked was "Dinle" in 1997. At least, it was original (in Turkish and with Turkish instruments). This song got the 3rd place.

I noticecd that Mirsad's sister (Emina Jahovic) was one of the 6 finalists. Needless to say that all 6 sucked. It's a pity cuz I liked both of the previous S&M representations (Z.Joksimovic and No Name).

I would pick Ruta. I think the song was actually good if not better than "Love or Leave". not to mention the performance.. on the other hand, I'm hearing lots and lots of people saying that Ruta's song was poor - I don't get it (for me the song has good lyrics and is very catchy), but maybe there's some sense in such claims if so many people say so :/
other two sensible candidates, imho, were Auguste (best pure song out there imho and I loved the blood idea she came up with for the final) and Saules Kliosas (despite them singing a non-Eurovision type song - it's better to lose with them than with a boring ballad ;)). 4Fun were not a top-3 performer in this particullar context (Eurovision), imho, despite sporting a quality song. it's simply too slow and the performance was pathetic (unless they radically improve on the idea - the singer could burst in tears, for example ;)). but I wish them well, of course..

I have to disagree about the Bulgarian song. When you go to rave parties, you hear hundreds and hundreds of those. The message "Voda" may be worthwhile, but it is not even a song. Just some electronic studio gimmick, lots of drums, and nice video shots of water, breath taking actually. The voice seems nice though squeeky screechy that might get to the nerve of a great number of listeners.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F9ytzgtLW1A

But when you want to dance to this year's Eurovision, give me Cyprus' "Comme ci, comme ça" anytime. It is very singable catchy tune, and courageous for Cyprus where you expect if it's not Greek, to be in English. But its French out of all languages, God bless her Evridiki:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7a3xsXi0YQA

Cyprus could have won hands down if it had presented a mixed bilingual Greek-Turkish song talking about breaking walls down in Nicosia. That would be the perfect message done by two Cypriot singers, one Greek one Turk. Anyways. Come to think of it, Sarbel, a Cypriot with Lebanese Arab background could come up with the perfect song that would include Greek and Turkish and make a huge impact in addition.

I have to admit Greece's Cypriot Sarbel has a very danceable tune "Geia Sou Maria", something reminiscent of Ricky Martin sexy tunes. Of course I'll root for him since he is half Lebanese and half Cypriot raised in London. Well I am Lebanese of Armenian origin and I lived and worked in Cyprus for 5 years, some of the best in my life... and I love London. So Sarbel (actually spelt Sharbel - he is named after a Lebanese prominent Maronite saint) would be favorite for me.

But Greece can't win this soon to "My Number One". But perhaps they can. I'd be so happy you wouldn't believe. Here is Sarbel's song:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fLVMwhJQUWU

and a "lively" performance:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mt09FVNiTW4

--

Talking about good songs, a good song is something else. You hear it and from the first note, it attracts you. After that you can't take the song off your mind for years and years and years

Take last year's Bosnian song by Hari Mata Hari called "Lejla". Now THAT is a song:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=si7Z1M3F7uk

Or France's 1991 song that never won even if it got huge votes. Amina's "Le Dernier Qui A Parlé":

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uikq4ZoY6LQ

Or the wonderful "Angel" by Malta's Chiara in 2005:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C5HQw0i5W8g

Last year, UK brought in a great song in Daz Sampson's "Teenage Life". It never did much, but it struck a cord with youth with a song that means so much about their difficult time:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KbW1YkqWdrE

An unforgettable dance tune would be UK's contagious "Ooh Aah Just A Little Bit" by Gina G:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4NxY0RiRgSA

In the same vein, sexy catchy tunes that I can't take off my mind is Cyprus' Constantinos Christophorou with Ela Ela (Come Baby):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uzk58zM_QQc

Mind you, none of these won, yet I don't get tired of listening to them after many many times.

I don't know, Bulgaria may win because of the universal message, but I was bored even before the second listen, and I listened to it 4 times later before writing these comments.

But I am very pleased Eurovision is getting all this attention here. If Eurovision is going to be discussed anywhere, it would be in such an international membership like Interbasket has. True some of the writers will always bash it while writing about it, it's not a "good image" to find anything nice about Eurovision, God forbid, but I think it is great fun and at times produces very unforgettable tunes.

Those who have the time, an excellent site to cover Eurovision

Since I am of Lebanese origin and I worked in Cyprus many years, so (surprise surprise...) I happen to like the Cyprus song "Comme ci, comme ca" by Evridiki

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tQMtaNzYHDI

and Lebanese Cypriot Sarbel's song for Greece "Geia Sou Maria"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mt09FVNiTW4

I guess it's an ethnic and habit thing more than actual talent LOL

Talking about good songs, a good song is something else. You hear it and from the first note, it attracts you. After that you can't take the song off your mind for years and years and years

Take last year's Bosnian song by Hari Mata Hari called "Lejla". Now THAT is a song:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=si7Z1M3F7uk

Very similar 2 SCG's participation in 2004.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QVpvE7m8oFY

both were very nice songs, sth rare in ESC lately

I agree that this song by Zeljko Joksimovic "Lane Moje" is one of the most beautiful songs ever presented. Of course these songs can rarely win. Here is the video version of the song:

May 12 is just a few days away. Who do you think has best chances to win?

You can name more than one country if you wish not to be confined to just one.

Probably because if DJ Bobo doesn't get the 12 points from each and every country, he will send the vampires to haunt the voters for the rest of their lives.

If he wins, it will be a fitting follow-up to last year's winning "creatures" LOL

Will the scene on stage be all red and bloody? I can't wait LOL

Godfather. :D

Anyway... here's the Slovenia's pick. grrr..

Just how many times the announcers said: The first time Serbia is in competition as an "independent state". Serbia was not "independent" last year?

Is this enough reason to welcome Serbia's "independence" with 12 points from everywhere. Although it is a good song, it was surely not winning material. A very forgettable song as time will prove.

I loved the intros to the songs though. The stages were changing acording to the songs. That was real nice. I remember in many years, the stage remained static. This year it was flexible and added to he songs richly.

I also was entertained with that girl doing these quirky comments and interviews. What I didn't like is that just names of countries were shown on screen, as if neither the performers nor the titles of the songs mattered. And no mention of the orchestras (or were there otchestras this year, or most of the music were just recordings, not live?) Just curious.

I loved the ESC-TV they had online. It was so clear and so smooth. Without it, I wouldn't have been able to follow. So thanks for Eurovision.tv website.

I thought the good Eurovision ones this year were: Bulgaria, Spain, Greece, Ireland, Armenia, Turkey, Sweden, France. Not that I particularly like them, but they are singable and very Eurovisionesque.

Last year they were Serbia and Montenegro. Unlike exUSSR, exYugoslavia uses joint efforts(all vote for Serbia), in exUSSR Lietuva, Latvia and Estonia vote for each other with 12, Georgia and Armenia too and Russia is left with Belarus

I want to point out something, Turkey gives 4 pts to Greece-12 pts to Armenia.

Armenia gives 0 to Turkey
Greece gives 0 to Turkey
Cyprus gives 0 to Turkey

It feels great to be a part of a nation who is very generous and compassionate. We don't need your votes, we still kicked your @sses.

Cyprus gives 12 pts to Greece. [email protected]

haters, try to get over it.

It's a funny kitschy spectacle...really.
Voting is wierd, performances are absoluteley tasteless...and music...sometimes you can find something.
I didn't think that our song have a chance to win...but it happened. Wierd because, some two years ago "Lane moje" was the best song for me...and Ruslana won, last year I thought that Bosnia had the best song, they lost to that Finnish monsters...this year I liked Bosnia, Hungary, Georgia, Latvia, and Russia...and we won.
Very strange thing was that betting odds in Belgrade were 1,8 for Serbia, with Each Way option...so if we were second or third...they would return the invested money.

The Irish song "They Can't Stop The Spring" by Dervish was beautiful and it came dead last.

There were quite delightful songs that didn't stand a chance. For example Evridiki's "Comme ci, comme ca" representing Cyprus was excellent.

So was drag queen DQ's "Drama Queen" representing Danemark. We never saw these latter two even reach the Final 24.

Such a shame.
