With 3 rounds (http://www.lcb.pt/ligatmn/?esc=calendario) completed for some teams, Larry Jon Smith (http://www.lcb.pt/ligatmn/?esc=jogador&id=564) leads the scoring table with 32.0 ppg, the best Portuguese being António Pires (http://www.lcb.pt/ligatmn/?esc=jogador&id=316) with 13.0 ppg.

Top rebounder is Mike Williams (http://www.lcb.pt/ligatmn/?esc=jogador&id=556) with 11.6 rpg, best Portuguese Élvis Évora (http://www.lcb.pt/ligatmn/?esc=jogador&id=32) (9.0 rpg).

Most assists per game for now go to Julian Blanks (http://www.lcb.pt/ligatmn/?esc=jogador&id=552) (7.5), followed by António Pires (http://www.lcb.pt/ligatmn/?esc=jogador&id=316) with 6.6 apg.

Benfica (http://www.lcb.pt/ligatmn/?esc=equipa&id=3), Porto (http://www.lcb.pt/ligatmn/?esc=equipa&id=4) (-1 game) and Ovarense (http://www.lcb.pt/ligatmn/?esc=equipa&id=2) (-1 game) lead the league (http://www.lcb.pt/ligatmn/?esc=classificacao).

I have a question about the Portuguese teams in fact. How come no portuguese team participates in Euro competitions this year? Not even in the FEC or FECC. What is the reasoning behind that? Have they just decided not to bother with them? Are the financial expenses outweighting the potential benefits?

I find it bizzare because 2 years ago there were 3 teams in the ULEB cup (OK, due to special circumstances, but still...) plus several others in FEC and FECC.

What changed this year?

Wouldn't it be useful for portuguese players to get some more international experience ahead of the portuguese NT's participation in the the EB next summer?

PS: Who is the fav to win the league this year?

That's actually a very good question to which I have no answer. Nothing was mentioned in the media about that situation, at least that I know of. I tried searching the news content of the LCB and FBP websites, but there's nothing there about the matter.
You are right, it's always useful to play in a European competition, the players show their skills to a wider audience and get experience. I simply don't know why that didn't happen this year.

I think Ovarense will win it again this year, but Porto and Benfica are always championship contenders.

How about Queluz? Where do they stand now? They had a fairly decent team a couple of years back. And what about Ginasio? Any chance of repeating last year's miracle?

rikhardur
11-07-2006, 03:59 PM
Queluz lost their first 3 games already, by only a few point difference that's true, but I don't expect that much from them, although the competition is only starting. Yeah, they had a magnificent team some years ago, but they had financial problems if I'm not mistaken.
It was a miracle indeed last year for Ginásio, I don't expect them to repeat it though, at least not with such vigour. :p

i guess we all should respect portugal after the tremndous summer the NT had (at least we israelis should).
i wonder how's miguel minehva is doing? he changed teams this summer and i realy liked him playing with the NT. tall, smart (and young) point guard, capable of scoring from outside and driving. was great in the crunch against israel. might be a legitmate player for bigger leagues.
anyway, how is he doing?

rikhardur
11-07-2006, 07:27 PM
Yeah, Minhava is now playing for Benfica, he was in Belenenses the previous season and played also some play-off games with Cornellà in the Spanish LEB 2. He's a good disher and also a good scorer imo. He's not getting as much minutes as he used to have in Belenenses though. Check his stats up to now: http://www.lcb.pt/ligatmn/?esc=jogador&id=56
I think he definitely has the potential to play in stronger leagues.

I remember when last year I was studying in Portugal, Arvydas Straupys was playing for CAB Madeira, and actually he was one of the leaders in that team, but he did't finished that season in CAB as far as I know... Maybe anyone know the reasons?
P.S. In daily sport newspaper "Bola" or what so ever, they were giving statistical leaders of Portuguese league, and Straupys always was in TOP3 in 3pt shooting table

There were apparently disciplinary reasons for Straupis's getting cut from the team. He was not with the team for the first League Cup game because of discipline problems and then he missed the following training. I don't know where he is playing now, do you happen to know?

Well so far the surprise is Lusitânia, they are high in the league and they have won the League Cup, which almost no-one really expected. They have a pretty cohesive team, with players not that "famous", but who have been able to develop hard work.
Ovarense is dominating the league as one would expect, with Porto being a sort of a deception this year, they began losing many "easy" games and have been somewhat unstable. Their coach, Alberto Babo, has already won the title with the team some years ago, but it seems that he's having difficulties putting chemistry into the team. They have one of the best Portuguese players ever, Nuno Marçal, but things really aren't going as they expected. It wouldn't surprise me if Babo would leave the team anytime soon. Benfica is playing as everyone expected, staying high in the table and this season is undoubledly a contender for the title.

About the NT, the main issue going on is if Valentyn Melnychuk will or will not invite Nuno Marçal to join the team for the Eurobasket. He didn't play the qualification games because the club he was playing for was not too keen on letting him go. I think Melnychuk will end up inviting him, especially because he seems all available (how could he not), and if he does join it'll be a very good addition to the NT, as I already said he's one of the best Portuguese players ever, he's tall, a good rebounder and a good shooter (from the 3-point line as well) despite having 32 already. Another great addition would be Sérgio Ramos, another all-time best, but he has been injured and I really don't know what's his situation right now. A player who you should start paying attention to is João Gomes (born in Cape Verde), although I don't know if he'll join the NT. He's 22 and has already been scouted by the NBA, he's the sort of athletic player capable of doing everything on the court and a very solid rebounder for his height (199cm). He's currently one of the best Portuguese in the league and I'm certain that he really has a bright future ahead of him. About Minhava he's doing all right, although with a bit of inconsistency, I think he's yet to find his shape this season.

These would be my choices for the NT:

Guards: Miguel Minhava, Filipe da Silva, Diogo Carreira
Fowards: Nuno Marçal, João Gomes, Sérgio Ramos, Paulo Cunha, João Santos
Centres: Élvis Évora, Jorge Coelho, Francisco Jordão, Miguel Miranda

He's doing pretty well I'd say, at least point-wise, he's averaging 9.7 ppg :) Check his stats here (http://www.lcb.pt/ligauzo/?esc=jogador&id=597) and his game-by-game stats here (http://www.lcb.pt/ligauzo/?esc=jogoajogo&id=597).

I've tried to keep Cody's stats up to date but it's tough when you don't read Portugese. :D

Hey rikhardur, :) Could you give me some informations considering Joao "Betinho" Gomes? What is his contract status? I heard few weeks ago that he already signed the contract with TAU Ceramica (in 2004) and that he is just being loaned by TAU Ceramica to Barreirense? Thanks, and keep on posting about the league. ;)

Hey elaj :p As far as I know he has a contract until 2009. TAU had some interest in him a couple of years ago yeah, as well as Valladolid, but it was just that. The basketball manager of Barreirense told recently that he's being targeted by European teams, but he did not specify. NBA scouts also have been watching him.
He's a very athletic guy, very quick, nice shooter, likes to dunk and is also good defensively. He recently scored 49 pts in the Vilagarcía youth tournament in Spain and ended up being named the MVP scoring 31 ppg.

Surprise first game win for Lusitânia, also considering that they were playing away. Ovarense is the strongest candidate for the title imo, so this win is even more amazing. Lusitânia is indeed this year's outsider and has been quite a surprise.

This series are very interesting at this stage, the decisive game will take place and really there's no prediction I can make, although Ovarense was always the favorite team to win the series as well as the title. Another decisive game will be held with home court advantage for Benfica. Still, like the other series, quite unpredictable, although I think Porto will win it. They usually (and traditionally) bear pressure much easily than Benfica, it's a sort of a syndrome for the reds.

Predictably Benfica didn't handle the pressure and ended up being smashed by Porto at home. The syndrome continues...
So, Porto and Ovarense are in the final.

Porto got totally smashed! Unbelievable. The team was somewhat unstable in some periods during the regular season, but in the playoff games they showed their true side, but surely not on this one. I didn't watch the game, but judging by the rest of the stats Ovarense set up an amazing defense.

The season comes to a close, and Ovarense wins the title for the second time in a row. Good series and any of the two teams could actually have won the crucial game, given the balance of the previous ones. Having home court advantage might just have proved to be the element to break balance between the two. Congrats to Ovarense, all in all they deserved it more than any other team ;)
