  • 6-8 Transsexual Player makes College Basketball Debut.. and she's 50 years old!

“If the example I can set for the kids who are transgenders in high school, for the people who hate transgender people and for those learning to deal with transgenders, transsexuals, if they see me as a normal person and we are not the bogeyman and love life and raise kids just like you,” said Ludwig, a scientist at Roche Molecular Diagnostics in Pleasanton, “maybe some of this mystery of who these people are will be taken away and there can be more blending into society. People are afraid of what they don’t know. I am willing to put myself out there. It was not like that before. It was just about playing basketball. It’s about more because I see an injustice.”

Transsexuals in sports does raise some questions. Not specifically related to the sex change or gender identification, but brought by it. I mean, in sports the physical aspect is crucial and won't a woman who was born and lived some or most of her life as a man have a physical edge over other women? I think she will. And since sex change can only be performed at a certain age (after puberty) at least in most European countries, the person will live long enough belonging to a gender and developing its characteristics.

The case of Caster Semenya is an important one regarding this issue and from what I know, the situation was not fully clarified. Transsexuals have all the right to compete in sports just like any other person, but under equal circumstances. That's what sports is all about right? Maybe a separate transsexual division? It would make sense to me.
