The most interesting game of the first day IMO. Two powerhouses of recent years, both coming in with lots of doubters this time. Expecting a high-scoring game.

Easily the game of the day here, Argentina has looked good in prep and Lithuania has lower expectations but they always seem to be at their most dangerous when they're the underdog. Gonna say Argentina takes a close one.

First game is always nervous and very important. Argentina has 3-4 experienced, worldclass players. Nevermind that they are old, it is only a beginning of OG and they will be fresh. I'm quite sure that LT will play vey fast, with high tempo and it can be key to the victory. I will say + 5 LT

Argentina by 12 - the backcourt of Gino, Delfino and Prigioni will make a mincemeat out of our slow footed guards...hoping for a shocking surprise upset though

DeJavu again ? or Not

Last time in 2008 Beijing games they also played their first game in the Olympics
as Lithuania shocks Argentina 79-75 but now its a different Lithuanian team so im betting for
Argentina.

Doesn't matter which one will win - either way, it will be a close game. True, our 2008 team played a high IQ basketball type of game, as did Argentina, but in recent years, we've evolved to play fast-paced, intense basketball along with aggressive defense (never mind the friendly games - real tournaments are what counts). This type of basketball caused Argentina problems two years ago, as their old veterans could no longer keep up with our youngsters. This year, of course, there's Ginobili and Nocioni, but they're vets as well a little bit past their prime. We're a younger and a faster team, they're a smarter, but slower team.

By the way, here are the viewing times for fans around the world (you don't need to convert anything - it's your time :D):
Great Britain - 22:15
Ireland - 22:15
Argentina - 18:15
Lithuania - 0:15
United States (New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Detroit) - 5:15 PM
United States (Chicago, Houston) - 4:15 PM
United States (Denver) - 3:15 PM
United States (Los Angeles, Portland, Seattle) - 2:15 PM
Brazil - 18:15
Venezuela - 4:45 PM
Colombia - 4:15 PM
Canada (Montreal, Toronto) - 5:15 PM
Russia (European) - 1:15

Nice game to watch as expected. Argentina is amazing, their first team is so good, too bad they dont have 3 great players more, they could be even better than Spain. Age is not a problem for them yet, maybe will be in Rio 2016 ;).

Amazing trio:
- Ginobili 19pts 10rbd 6as 4st 8 fouls drawn
- Scola 32pts 5 rbd 4 as 3bl 9 fouls drawn
- Delfino 20 pts (6/9 3point) in 22min.

Lithuanians have to show much more if they want to be competitive in this tournament... A bit dissapointed by their game... And Jasikevicius is really getting old.

Jet lag? That should not have been a problem for the Lithuanian team. Perhaps Argentina was just that good. The Argentines just shot out the lights today.

Argentina played really well and deserved that blowout win 100%

Lithuanian team... should just pack their bags and go home. We suck. We just plain old suck and there's no other word to put it. With Javtokas on the team we could have made this a respectable loss... but we couldn't have won.

well well, looks like I underestimated this argentinian team quite a bit (or maybe overestimated our aging toothless squad)
Kemzura once again proved what a joke of a "coach" he is, just like our guards' inability to defend their own shadow...Nigeria game will most probably decide if we are to qualify into Last 8 - oh the dark ages of lithuanian basketball...

Slow offense, poor defense, this is what I'd use to describe our team today. Kalnietis is no leader - wtf was he doing taking so many shots? Jasikevicius threw up so many bricks - we really need fast guards and strong centers. Maybe we'll recover after this loss, take every opponent seriously, and play like our life depends on the game. I'll say this - if Lithuania doesn't make the quarterfinals, I want Kemzura to pack his bags and get the hell out of the team.

If we don't make the quarterfinals this will put a shame on Lithuanian basketball forever. So if that were to happen, I personally would just hire a non-Lithuanian coach for the NT, find a Bo McCaleb clone to play the point and call it a day.

I dislike Sarunas Jasikevicius - he just always has to throw even if that's a rushed up crap or he plainly sux that day. Look at his statistics. By far his statistics sux the most and he still was shooting + 4 (!) turnovers. Kaukenas > Jasikevicius by all means. His rushed shots where he just rushes in and shoots and at the last blink of a second looks at the basket sux. His 3 pointers sucked as well. He can no longer shoot 3 pointers (used to be great shooter back when he was in "Lietuvos Rytas" but now he just sux). I don't understand why trainer lets him play that much (I know big name and all but wtf). The less he was in pre-Olympic tourney games the better the team performed.

Also, liths were shooting REALLY poorly and def was a NOOB def. It looked there that they came just to stand around and to go home. I can't even compare that game to Dominican game def. In pre-Olympics games if someone put a screen on them they walked up a little and sub'ed players. All they did now was both jumping for a 1 guy and noone is picking the other guy. REALLY really (!) crappy def + given bad shooting that was just an awful game.

And for the sake of..... TAKE JASIKEVICIUS OFF THE FLOOR if he is soo ignorant and selfish (being in big club like Panathinaikos probably got him thinking that he is super player and DESERVED to play/shoot all that he wants with his 15% from 2s and 0% from 3 point line). 1st fix your shooting and THEN come to talk.

+ like I said, VERY sloppy and bad def! Noone even screened ppl. out

On the other hand Argentina was energetic, aggressive and shot well.

FINAL REMARK: argentina is the team that feeds on sloppy passes and teams like this one. They KNOW when passes will be made and it's easy to steal ball. Like I know that you don't need to have Engineering degree for basketball but THINK! at least observe other players. Every steal that argentina did could of easily countered just by observing the other guy motion and CUTTING in or fake passing (that it would look realistic) 1 or 2 times. - Also fake shoting could of done a lot for this team. When a guy tries to steal off the ball just cut in and it's 2 easy points! Or at least fake a few passes.. Very noob game on offense and defense (especially) and uninteligent.

Congrats to Argentina! Well deserved win and done in a nice fashion.
I would just not go as far as sending our guys back home just yet. Yes, an important game lost, big margin, but it is just a first game and these opening games often are a bit weired. Argentina just looked so motivated and on fire, while we looked lost...

after this game I am looking at probably france/nigeria/lithuania fighing for 3rd spot in this group. If france wins against argentina, then most likely fight for 4th spot with nigeria.

In a sense, one way or the other you will have to compete with 1st place group team (if you want to shoot for the medals). So it's a question of what you are planing of playing against USA (if u take 3rd spot in group) or other (if you take 4th spot in group).

I would say best would be getting 4th spot in group for Lith and taking on 1st spot B group team. That would be moment of truth more or less.

Well they will ahve like what? 12h of rest b'fore nigeria game 2morrow. and taht game is key game. If you loose you are 99% out if you win then there is a good chance of getting 4th spot in group.

Tho I am disappointed.. by today's game.. so un-inteligent and bad both offensively and diffensively

Ok its always easier to take humilating lose, that the close one.Next day gonna rise, next game gonna came.BUT GOD DAM WE HAVE TO DEFEND AND COMPETE...

That was the case in Panathinaikos, but not in NT. I think the coach needs to know how to use Jasikevicius - how come Obradovic almost always got decent performance out of him and Kemzura can't? Is it because Kemzura is not nearly on the same level as Obradovic?

we were evolving in the right way (2010), but then Kemzura changed his approach and called back Šaras, Kaukėnas, Songaila, brothers... and our basketball has taken a step back. Now our team is very not clear: we have experienced players, but they compared with the Argentine's veterans look like a mummy's. We have talented players, but they either do not play in a team, or have no opportunities to show what they can. it's sad :(

if we compare scolas and nocioni "dirty tricks" inside kleiza looks like clean player.Even that nocioni fall kleiza only touched him and he was flying like bird over table...ofcourse its flooping and replay shown that very clear.Lithuanian basketball always were cleaner and with way less acting than any of the american team. But this is part of basketball ... yesterday argentina just kicked our asses in very impresive style and not because of flooping or dirty tricks ,trhey just totally outplayed us in every category. But doint put finger on dirty play of other teams, when you have on your team scolas and nocioni(those 2 almost in every game are searching for fight partners in opponents team :) )

that had nothing to do with floping and replay showed very clear klieza pushed nocioni whille runnig. that thing is very dangerus, same when delfino was going for breakaway layup. can't remeber who tried to stop him with dirty push....not to metnion few wrestling moves by liths. saras is also flopper and whiner by those standards. lithuania doesn't flop less, is not less dirty or does not whine less then argentina...but i gueass eyes see what mind wannts.....no need to disgrace argentina beacuse they outplayed you

Shawshank
07-30-2012, 10:48 AM
yeah he pushed him,but it was running contact betwteen two big bodies and one of those big bodies looked like girl with flooping and melodrama flying over table...Have who watched this aregntina team ever? match agains spain, usa they were fighting, when begin to loosing, making intentionals fouls...James running in fast brake some argentina from behind put him down holding his shoulder when his in air... even yesterday kalnietis running to dunk ginobili bum form behind it was way dangerous than nocioni moments, because kalnietis was in the air... what about scolas trick on ibakas head one week ago? what about nocioni elbow stright to javtokas in 2008 olimpics? Comon lithuanians only kleiza is a bit wild, other are very calm players, jasikevicius is whinner not dirty player, they dont use wrestling elements in game... We lost but we dont begin to wrestling as argentina does when they lose... Nobody disgraced argentina game,i reapeted they just outplayed us,but dont act than lithuanian playing dirty, when argentina is ahead of us in this area...and ofcourse americans is better actors and acts more its normal. Its in their blood to act and make melodramas...venezual QF tiurnaments venezualins with vazques was just fun to watch those "im saving my country" melodramas on the cuorat :D argentinians have similiar blood, but for me its ok,i dont see problem here, every nation have their own style, their own attitude. BUT WE LITHUANINS NEVER WERe DIRTY PLAYING COUNTRY NEVER! we are juts trying to play hard and fair.Play hard its not dirty, dirty is intentional moves like holding shoulders in air or ibakas head...I see you from croatia and former jugoslavia schols players always were very smart floopers ,so you should know even better about flooping in basketball.Even your M.Popovich is very keen in this area, but after some years in zalgiris, hes now flooping less ,because he seen that it doesnt work in our league.I never could understand how 2m00 100kg men can fly 5 metres after contact with similiar men as some are showing...i didnt thought kleixza is so strong that he can push nocioni without even using hands 3m to stands :D

Bottom line argentina is very strong and tallented team, and plays superb basketball when the game goes their way,but sometimes look how they act when things dont go that good...

Straight forward

Argentina played perfect basketball no matter Lithuania's average (to say the least?) defence. If they will keep this level, they will win some kind of a medal.

As for Lithuania, I think a bad start might work out well for us. We started very strong in 2004 and 2008 and we missed something in the do or die games. Personally, I think the key wasn't even defence - our both point guards were sinking the team...You wouldn't call that a good game.

Lithuania will bounce back. I'm pretty sure.

well, we have some fast young players currently, but you can't do much sitting on the bench, correct? When washed up Jaska and Kaukenas are gifting one ball after another to their opponents, there's not much you can do really...Kemzura is digging his own grave with such approach and I can't wait till this clown is out of NT. I think the Liths have enough talent. Some of that talent is not represented on the team. Not mentioning Linas Kleiza who is an elite talent. A front court of healthy Robertas Javtokas, Jonas Valenciunas and Donatas Motiejūnas would be formidable match up for any nation. With those players Liths have strength, speed and athletcism. Martynas Poicus is athletic and looks fast to the eye test. Deividas Dulkys is an agressive scorer that needs to work on his skill and confidence yet he should be given a chance. Liths have options.
