Lets see if they can build the gym in time or if they are going to build it at all. I would have preferred Tunisia.

Ivory Coast Target Afrobasket Title

Ivory Coast Basketball Federation, ICBF, have turned to a familiar name in an attempt to return to the summit of African basketball.

French side Paris Levallois Coach, Christophe Denis, whose father was on the technical staff 26 years ago when Ivory Coast last won the Afrobasket, has been put in charge of the senior national team, The Elephants.

Speaking on his immediate target, Denis said: ““For sure, what we want as the host nation is to win the tournament (2013 Afrobasket).

“This is our goal.”

“We need to focus on motivating our players. As the host nation, we will do our best to win Afrobasket 2013.”

As for how long Denis runs the team, he said: “Initially, I have signed a contract for the Afrobasket and to qualify the team to Spain 2014.

“As the federation wants to keep consistency in the coaching staff, we may stay longer.”

The Ivory Coast last won an Afrobasket title in 1985 with an 84-73 triumph over Angola.

Ivory Coast also have three silver medals (1978, 1980 and 2009) in their history.

“Qualifying for the 2014 World Cup in Spain is equally one of our objectives.”

Ivory Coast are 37th in the FIBA World Rankings, just below Senegal, and fourth in Africa rankings. Angola are top, followed by Nigeria.

I don't understand the FIBA rules. Wy they barred 3 players with Cape Verde nationality?
Those players have there portuguese real name 's goted from there parents who were from Cape Verde.
The situation its similar with the americans in Nigeria.
Country's like Lybia and Rwanda played with players with fake nationality and identification.

How do they separate teams on the same points?

If it's overall points differential, Cape Verde could beat Senegal, but would still not quite be qualified, as Mali and Senegal could both finish on 4 wins and 2 losses as well (Senegal beats Mauritania, Mali beats Mauritania and Cape Verde).

If it's head-to-head points differential, it would go down to the points scored in the matches not involving Mauritania - in which case, Cape Verde could still go out even if they beat Senegal.

Not sure about South Africa.

Only Seychelles entered in Zone 7 - Madagascar, Mauritius, Comoros were meant to take part, and even Réunion and Mayotte were invited as guests - but in the end, nobody could go to Seychelles, and so FIBA Africa decided no team could qualify without playing a match and put Seychelles in Zone 6.

Hi Soliman! Why weren't Ismail Ahmad and Omar Samhan called to join the NT?
I remember Omar Oraby was called to join the NT in Jones Cup but I don't know if he actually joined or not. For sure having him on the roster would have been a great addition as well.

And why I'm not surprised about Samhan... As I remember few months ago he once again promised to join NT, but once again found more valuable "jobs" to do during summer, like partyin', visiting McDonalds and etc... This guy doesn't change for few years now, since his days in Zalgiris, he've had some talent, is nice guy, but his totally wrong attitude for sports is just killing it

Looking at the rosters of the african teams, i think this will be the toughest tournament.

5 teams are a step forward(Tunisia,Angola,Nigeria,Ivory Coast and Cameroon) ,one is a big underdog -Senegal, and maybe two teams with question marks (CAR and Egypt).

Tunisia and Nigeria do have the last year experience, Angola is the powerhouse of Africa, Ivory Coast is the host and Cameroon has probably the best player of the tournament (Luc Mbah a Moute). It's difficult to say the winner and the three teams to advance to World Cup.

My picks: 1. Cameroon 2. Nigeria 3. Angola:)

That's how it goes in every Afrobasket...

Have a look at every NT's topic in IB. I have provided roster info (credits of course should go to some other guys as well) about almost every NT that participates in Afrobasket 2013.

The final rosters I m missing at the moment are Tunisia's, Morocco's, Burkina Faso's, Mozambique's and Congo's.

Videos from some of the teams' arrivals in Abidjan...

LOL African champions losing to a team who got beaten up by supposedly weaker Asian teams in the Jones Cup... overconfidence for Tunisia?

So which is the bigger upset? Egypt over Tunisia or Chinese Taipei over China?

I think Egypt over Tunisia is by far the bigger upset. This year's Chinese team was the weakest in recent memory, so going into the Asian Championship there was a question of how competitive they would be. The Egyptian upset seemingly came out of nowhere. The Egyptians struggled all summer during preparation period. They didn't play particularly well during the prelims. Then suddenly, they knock off the Group B top-seed and defending African Champions!!! That's impressive.

The good thing about Tunisia's loss is that it opens the door for either Cape Verde or Egypt to grab a spot in the WC, although based on what I've seen, I can't envision either squad getting past Angola, Ivory Coast or Nigeria.

Did Egypt simply play really really well or did Tunisia play half-hardheartedly expecting to beat a weak team like Egypt?

I have watched all of Tunisia's games, and simply they were pretty bad in three of their four games.
On paper it's a big upset but if you watched the games Tunisia's level just weren't that high this time around. Mejri nothing but a shot blocker and Rhomdane kept choking on the free-throw line.

Angola will win, if Nigeria doesn't make teams respect them from down town.

Well the bracket goes like this: Winner of Angola-Morocco/Winner Ivory Coast-Cameroon and Winner Nigeria/Senegal/Winner Egypt/Cape Verde.

Obviously if Nigeria wins tonight, i think it'll be the first finalist. From the other pair i will vote Cameroon, but it's very uncertain.

This loss of Nigeria was so frustrating.Kudos to Senegal for their fighting spirit but Nigeria had such a talented roster. The coaching was beyond terrible,so many capable post players yet they kept chucking ill advised shots in the 4th quarter. When you can form such a strong squad at least find some capable coach to lead them, not some amateurs.

Although I didn't have a dog in the flight, Nigeria's loss to Senegal is as disappointing as it comes. They had a real chance to build on their Olympic appearance by qualifying for the WC, but instead, they'll have to start right back at square one. What a shame for their program. The Nigerians are way too talented and experienced to go out like this.

If they would spend some money on a coach that knows actually how to put a team together and bring in some basic sets...

The PG-spot was crucial to Nigeria and unlike the years before (Tony Skinn, Michael Umeh, Josh Akognon...) they didnt have a capable player to do it this year.
Ben Uzoh is still not a PG and after seeing him play, I am know pretty sure that he wont succeed on the European market if brought back once more.
I have no clue why Oruche and Gumut made the team as any mediocre D1 college-player with Nigerian roots would have done it better.

What happened to Ade Dagunduro? Koko Archibong retired. Ibekwe is injured and Skinn is (heopfully) working his way back. Obasohan had a bad season and might be bouncing back. Oyedeji should retire internationally so there is space for Ezeli now under the basket.

Is there a slight chance to bring Victor Oladipo in? Melvin Ejim is gone (Canada) after prepping with them last year.

Dagundaro had a serious injury at Roma. Ibekwe couldn't join because he signed contract at Japan. Obasohan didn't want to play this year. For Oladipo i can't tell.
For Gumut,Uzoh and Oruche you are correct, i agree. Also Bakare is not a coach. I could mention Ere(fantastic season with Varese).

The nigerian federation should focus on wild card and convince FIBA that they have a program on their mind for 2016.

Ibekwe is according his own twitter account injured and is currently working his way back on the court. Obasohan signed with Monaco early on and they didnt let him go, thats what he twittered.

Ebi Ere was at one point part of the NT...heard the chemistry with the others wasnt good, but who knows...

The NBBF wont spend money on the wild card (since they are always short on money) and that's what FIBA actually is looking for.
