Since I recently read about their football programs, I thought it would be nice to search for basketball as well:

Richard Nguema:

Family is from the country.Cousin plays for the football national-team.

Adam Hanga's dad is also from EG. He was drafted by the Spurs this year and plays for Manresa next season.

Just read, that Malabo Kings lost to Mazembe in the Zone 4 qualifiers for the African Club Championships and are qualified as vice-champs of the zone.

As a Spanish speaking country in Africa, Equatorial Guinea really interests me. I read the one book I could find about the country ("Tropical Gangsters") and the country doesn't sound very nice, obviously.

Do they have a national team? I guess I assume they have a national soccer team. In that book, I seem to recall reading that their soccer stadium in Malabo was used as a detention center.

If i'm not mistaken there were quite a few players from Equatorial Guinea playing in the LPB Portuguese League but I don't know if that's still the case...

Nice try Khalid, but that's not Equatorial Guinea's roster. ;) They have Spanish names. And if you copy and paste from Africabasket.com, then add a link to it :) http://www.africabasket.com/Guinea/basketball.asp
This is Guinea-Conakry.

All those players are from Guinea-Bissau Khalid, they mixed everything up and even wrote names wrong from the first to the second list :p It's a mess.

They have Spanish names.

Not quite. Lots of their soccer players have Portuguese names :D, maybe their basketball players do too.

None of the names of their football NT (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Equatorial_Guinea_national_football_team) is specifically Portuguese (Francisco, Manuel, etc are common to both languages).

Yeah, I was thinking of their women's team which just participated in the World Cup:

Strangely the men's team without Portuguese-named (or Nigerian-named, Cameroonian-named, Burkinabe-named...) players isn't as successful ;)

You nailed it! They're Brazilian, check it out :D Even Vānia mentioned there played for Brazil last year and for Equatorial Guinea this year

One more big scam I suppose...

Anyway, let's focus on the thread.

Even though spanish is an official language, just like french and portuguese BTW, most people speak only local languages like fang and bubi.

How am I supposed to know that Africabasket.com sucks that bad :D
(I did indeed get both lists from Africabasket.com)

The first link from here (supposedly for Guinea or Guinea-Conakry)
http://www.africabasket.com/Guinea/basketball-National-Team.asp

The second list from here (supposedly for Guinea Bissau)
http://www.africabasket.com/Guinea-Bissau/basketball-National-Team.asp

Hehehe, Khalid, there are three Guineas and you got both times the wrong one, so it's not Africabasket.com fault :D
There is no section there for Equatorial Guinea :(

As far as I was able to figure out: The locals do carry mostly spanish names, not portuguese names.
Regarding soccer: The country changed its policy recently regarding "getting the passport" and recruited mercenaries from all over to play for both, men's and women's national-teams.
I think the same system may got Malabo Kings to play in the final of the Zone IV as the country has never reached anything in regional competitions before. They once played the zonal qualifiers and placed last. I cant find the link to it though...
