Do you see the lack of Americans as a problem? I really don't. It's an opportunity for Portuguese players to play more.

Looks like Porto will pass directly to the finals, since CAB Madeira withdrew from the playoff semi-finals due to... financial problems. CAB will be back next season and will try to avoid this season's hindrances.
In the other semi-final Benfica will face Lusitânia in a best-of-five series.

RELEGATED TO PROLIGA (second division)

:(12th place: Ginásio Figueirense (0-22). Financial difficulties forced Ginásio to waive some of their previous season top players (PG João Reveles, C Marco Gonçalves). After a terrible start, the team improved a bit with the arrival of Serbian-Portuguese forward STEFAN DJUKIC (12.4 points, 8.2 rebounds) and the good second half of the season by Angolan point guard EDSON FERREIRA (6.4 points, 4.4 assists, 2.6 rebounds). Good season for swingman PEDRO ROCHA (12.5 points, 3.7 rebounds, 1.23 steals).

:(11th place: Terceira Basket (4-18). Terceira’s financial problems led to their relegation. Interesting stats line by former Central Arkansas PF DURRELL NEVELS (16.8 points, 9.9 rebounds, 2.69 blocks). PG NATE BOWIE, also from Central Arkansas, led the league in scoring: 19.0 points; TONY MURPHY (SG, Norfolk State) was second with 18.4 points.

NO PLAYOFFS, NO RELEGATION

10th place: Sampaense Basket (8-14).
PF BRIAN ADDISON (18.2 points, 8.3 rebounds, 56.0 FG%) excelled in his first LPB season. Cape Verdean Swingman IVAN ALMEIDA, a late addition to the team, showed flashes of brilliancy (13.3 points, 4.5 rebounds, 1.91 steals). The cornerstone of the team was the Portuguese trio formed by SG/SF JOÃO BALSEIRO (15.5 points, 2.32 steals), G JORGE SING (10.2 points, 5.9 assists, 58.1 FG%), and PG JOÃO REVELES (9.2 points, 5.3 assists).

:)9th place: B.C. Barcelos (8-14).
With a modest budget, B.C. Barcelos avoided relegation. Spanish PF/C SERGI COLL (14.7 points, 7.5 rebounds) was a pleasant surprise; so was his backup JOÃO MOREIRA (8.4 points, 3.9 rebounds). NUNO OLIVEIRA had an impressive debut in the LBP: 11.3 points, 5.5 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.68 steals. AUGUSTO MATOS, the Mozambican international SG, was Barcelos’ second leading scorer (12.1) but shot only 25% behind the arc. Good season for veterans CARLOS FECHAS (PG, 8.2 points, 4.1 assists) and PEDRO SILVA (PF, 8.2 points, 6.8 rebounds).

TEAMS ELIMINATED IN THE QUARTEFINALS

:(Vitória Guimarães (8th in the regular season: 9-13; eliminated 0-3 by F.C. Porto in the quarterfinals)
Another team haunted by financial problems. Before his departure to Plasencia Extremadura (Spain, LEB Plata), center CLÁUDIO FONSECA had an handful of monstrous games: 19 points, 18 rebounds against C.A.B. Madeira, 18 points, 17 rebounds against F.C. Barreirense… Late addition BRIAN MORRIS (17.8 points, 10.8 rebounds) and Latvian forward MARIS GULBIS (13.0 points, 5.3 rebounds) were the team’s leading scorers. Veterans PAULO CUNHA (12.6 points, 7.5 rebounds, 1.93 steals) and RUI MOTA (9.4 points, 4.3 assists, 1.64 steals) proved they still have it. Young backup PG ANDRÉ BESSA (7.8 points, 2.0 assists, 1.57 steals) had an interesting season.

Académica Coimbra (7th in the regular season: 9-13; eliminated 1-3 by S.L. Benfica in the quarterfinals)
DILLION SNEED’s departure hurt the team. His stats (16.4 points, 9.6 rebounds, 61.2 FG%) far exceeded those of his replacement, the more famous ROLANDO HOWELL (2000 McDonald’s HS All-American). Nigerian-American SG RICHARD ORUCHE (16.2 points, 3.4 rebounds) was able to put 41 points past C.A.B. Madeira. Good playoff series by the intriguing young Spanish-American forward ARNETTE HALLMAN (8.0 points, 10.8 rebounds).

:)F.C. Barreirense (4th in the regular season: 14-8; eliminated 0-3 by C.A.B. Madeira in the quarterfinals)
Though unable to adapt to F.C. Porto, C ANTHONY HILL (15.7 points, 6.8 rebounds) was the perfect fit for Barreirense. Head Coach Antonio Herrera’s work with a roster loaded with young players is worthy of praise. Mário Palma, the coach of the Portuguese NT, probably noticed starting PF MIGUEL QUEIRÓZ (6’8’’ – 2.02, 1991: 6.1 points, 5.6 rebounds) and his backup JOÃO GUERREIRO (6’9’’ – 2.05, 1990: 5.0 points, 3.6 rebounds).

:(A.D. Ovarense (3rd in the regular season: 17-5; eliminated 0-3 by S.C. Lusitânia in the quarterfinals)
A breakout season for young PG JOSÉ BARBOSA (7.8 points, 4.1 assists, 1.59 steals) and solid numbers by C CHRISTOPHER LEE (13.4 points, 10.0 rebounds, 52.9 FG%) and PF AUSTEN POWERS (14.2 points, 6.3 rebounds) aren’t enough to compensate a first round elimination at the hands of S.C. Lusitânia. The departure of Ovarense’s Head Coach Mário Leite was a terrible blow for the team. Nice year for SG/SF FERNANDO NEVES (13.0 points, 49.5 3P%).

TEAMS ELIMINATED IN THE SEMIFINALS

:)S.C. Lusitânia (6th in the regular season: 11-11; eliminated 1-3 by S.L. Benfica in the semifinals)
Congratulations to S.C. Lusitânia! Their playoff run included a quality win over S.L. Benfica and the swept of heavily favorites A.D. Ovarense. A weak bench was compensated by their starting lineup. SF MOHAMED CAMARÁ brought intensity to every game (10.1 points, 7.0 rebounds, 1.41 steals). Intimidation was provided by Canadian-American C MARCEL MOMPLASIR (3.29 blocks during the playoffs). BRIAN MILL’s professional debut was auspicious: 15.0 points and 7.0 rebounds for the former Mercer University PF. SG AUGUSTO SOBRINHO’s playoffs (14.3 points, 2.3 rebounds and 3.3 assists) were superb. PG RICKY FRANKLIN (17.1 points, 3.2 rebounds, 3.3 assists) was Lusitânia’s MVP.

:mad:C.A.B. Madeira (5th in the regular season: 13-9; due to financial reasons the team was unable to participate in the playoffs semifinal)
The team’s withdrawal from the playoffs semifinal tainted an otherwise very good season. PG MÁRIO FERNANDES led the league in assists (6.6) and dominated the quarterfinal series against F.C. Barreirense (23.3 points, 6.0 assists and 4.33 steals!). SG JAIME SILVA led the league in steals (2.94) and his team in scoring (14.8). Nice playoff series by SF FÁBIO LIMA (9.7 points, 9.0 rebounds). For SHAW JACKSON’s year see above (“Illustrious veteran” award). When healthy, C JARVIS GUNTER brought intimidation to Madeira’s frontcourt (7.9 rebounds, 1.13 steals and 1.00 blocks). PF/C JORGE COELHO (14.2 points, 4.9 rebounds and 0.77 blocks) still deserves a spot in the team that will try to qualify Portugal for the 2013 Eurobasket.

:)Champion: S.L. BENFICA (2nd in the regular season: 19-3; beat F.C. Porto 3-2 in the finals)

In an injury plagued season (Sérgio Ramos, Tomás Barroso, Seth Doliboa, Frederick Gentry …) Benfica won his 23th title. SG TED SCOTT (17.0 points, 2.3 assists) showed flashes of brilliancy. Returning to the LPB PF SETH DOLIBOA had a solid regular season (14.6 points, 5.9 rebounds). Point guard problems were solved with the arrival of MARCUS NORRIS (9.4 points, 2.8 rebounds, 2.0 assists in the final). SF HESHIMU EVANS excelled in the finals (12.0 points, 6.2 rebounds, 1.6 steals). Youngsters CARLOS FERREIRINHO (5.1 points), TOMÁS BARROSO and ANTÓNIO MONTEIRO (4.7 points, 2.0 rebounds) are the future of this team.

2nd place: F.C. PORTO (1st in the regular season: 20-2)

SG CARLOS ANDRADE had a terrific season (11.6 points, 2.09 steals and 7.0 rebounds!!). Veteran PF GREG STEMPIN (17.0 points, 6.7 rebounds) is said to have applied for a Portuguese passport (good news for Mário Palma). C ROB JOHNSON was Porto’s best player in the finals (11.0 points, 7.0 rebounds and 1.4 blocks) well backed by sixth man MIGUEL MIRANDA (9.8 points, 6.0 rebounds). PG REGGIE JACKSON probably won’t return for the 2012-2013 season. Young SF JOÃO SOARES (4.7 points, 2.9 rebounds in the playoffs) deserves more playing time.

Indeed. But if it wasn't for him, things wouldn't turn out the way they did. He later commented on the situation as if he had done nothing wrong and nothing had happened. So dishonest. I never really liked his personality and once again he proved me right. And I root for Benfica.
Another sad thing is that the finals were only talked broadly in the media because of this...

The incidents in Dragão Caixa were a suitable conclusion for a hellish basketball season: several cases of unpaid salaries, one withdrawal from the playoffs, players forced to strike and being waived for that. I didn´t think it was possible but Portuguese basketball reached a new low. With the specter of bankruptcy haunting almost every single club, I suspect this off-season will bring tragic news. Let’s hope redemption can come in the form of a brilliant qualification campaign for the 2013 Eurobasket.

It's a shame, like Rikhardur said, that it took a Greece-like ending and a throphy lifted in the locker room for portuguese media to talk basketball.
I just wanna add to that shameful summary of events that on TV it is clear that objects (including basketballs) are thrown at Benfica players and staff right after the buzzer and before the Carlos Lisboa's gesture which, anyway, should cause him a bold suspension. You can't fight fire with fire in those kinds of environments if you want basketball away from the football crap.
