      And the second round.

japan rallied from behind to upset south korea 94-91 in a quarter-final match here on saturday at the current asian games. the japanese hoopsters, trailing 53-36 at the interval, fought back tenaciously in the second half with a tough full-court press defence and tied the score at 73-all seven minutes before the gong. the south koreans missed many shots under stranglehold pressures by the taller japanese before kim yoo-taek netted six points to lead south korea to tie japan at 83-all with two minutes and 20 seconds to go. but toyama hideaki boosted japan's winning chance by stealing two south korean passes to start a 9-2 run which lifted japan 92-85 ahead with 60 seconds ticking off. the japanese, who had lost to an all-pro philippine side after leading 43-29 at interval thursday, dribbled time away to secure the cliff-hanging win. "the victory is very important to us since in the last seven years we've never beaten the south koreans either at the asian games or at the asian championship," shimizu yoshiaki, head coach of the japanese team, told xinhua after the thrilling game. "we've been afraid of the south koreans in the past but now we know we can beat them," he added. "the key man to our victory tonight is the 2.13-meter yamasaki akifumi. he covered the under-basket area so that others could press out south korea's sharpshooters." shimizu said that he would choose defending champions china and the philippines as the hot favorites at the beijing games. he said that his team and south korea would likely battle for the third spot. earlier saturday, china scored a comfortable win of 104-71 over the united arab emirates after leading 48-35 in another quarter-final match.
iran claimed the biggest upset by edging japan 71-70 in the asian games men's basketball tourney here on monday. hatami nehran was today's hero who netted the winning threepoint goal with 35 seconds left before the final whistle, helping iran rally back from 68-70 down and beat japan in the cliff-hanger match. the spirited iranians then grabbed the rebound from a missed japanese shot and armaghani said dribbled the rest 20 seconds to the final buzzer. "our team played very well today with a combined defence and that gave us a lot fastbreaking chances," iran's coach rahmanian niyang told xinhua after the thrilling games. the iranian team outrun their taller rivals 10-2 in the fastbreak points. "and we also have good shooters and they shot very sharply for the victory, thanks to our special three-point training," the iran coach added. rahmanian told xinhua that during the shooting drills, his players had to run from the back court to get the ball and attempted a three-pointer behind a big chair as a hard defender, which paid off in today's triumpy over japan. iran's victory darkened the japnese brightful hope for a semifinal berth in the quarterfinal group b, in which the japnese rallied from a 36-53 down at half time to upset south korea 94-91 on last saturday. in today's action, iran jumped to a 8-3 lead in the first three minutes but japan came back to level the score at 12-all and then iran trailed at 14-20 after 2.02-meter ace center mohsen was crashed on the floor and out the match at the fifth minute. but mohsen came back to the court at the 11th minute and lifted iran to tie with japan again at 28-all before iran led 36-34 at half-time from a last-second goal by kasaipur mohammad. japan now has to fight their ace rival chinese taipei on tuesday for a top four slot in the current games. japan lost to chinese taipei with 11 points in the 15th asian championships last year in beijing. iran, with a one loss to chinese taipei and one win over japan, might turn out as a dark-horse if they could beat south korea in their last group outing on tuesday. south korea has to win both its match against chinese taipei later tonight and iran on tuesday before gaining its top-four berth in the 11-team tournament. hatami mehran was the architect of iran's victory with a game high 24 points and sadeghzaeh mohsen added 15 and anarmaghani saiid with 11.
the point differences didn't really show the ability of the philippines team," said wang changyou, head coach of the chinese men's basketball team. the chinese cagers trounced their philippine counterparts 125 -60 in a lopsided second round match in the men's basketball tournament of the 11th asian games here today. "the philippine team is a very good team and they suffered a great loss only because we prevented them from displaying their individual ability," wang said. the philippine team, made up by all professional cagers, is strong in individual skills like man-to-man defence and quick attack. "we adopted the man-to-man defence throughout the game," wang said, "that is obviously out of their expectation and cast a great shadow to their confidence." wang was satisfied with his players: "they played a brilliant game tonight and i am very satisfied." wang said the philippines played an emotional game. "if they had calmed down and had a strong desire to win, the points difference would not have been so great." the coach and captain of the philippine team failed to show up at the press conference.
a shot by kim hyun-jun in the last seconds put south kroea to a 87-84 victory over the chinese taipei in the asiad men's basketball quarterfinal round here on monday. south koreans kept their semifinal hope alive with the cliffhanger win after going down to japan 94-91 in their first group b match last saturday. the south koreans trailed at 82-84 with just one minute to go before kim hung-jun made it 84-all with 30 seconds remained on the running clock. kim yoo-taek grabbd a defensive rebounder to lift the south korea's hope for a break-away with last 20 second avilable. 3et play well both in and shootings neither our team work," kim sang ha, presidnet of the south korean basketball association, told xinhua after match. han chang do, a south korean tv commentator, told xinhua that their team was not in the best form because three key players, the 2.07-meter center han ki-ban, sharper shooter lee choong-hee and veteran guard lee won-woo, were suffering from injuries and could not play in the current games. south korea had to exchange lead neck-to-neck with the determined chinese taipei and pulled ahead to a slim lead of 50-47 at the interval. kim hyun-jun grabbed a game high 33 points for south korea and hur jae added 24 and kim yoo-taek collected 13.
south korea fought into the semifinals of the asian games men's basketball tourney here tuesday, outplying iran 113-88 in a quarterfinal group b match. kim hyun-jun hit a game high score of 31 points for south korea, lee won-woo added 24 and hur jae shot 19. the top socrer for iran was puresfahani faramarz with 22 points while his teamate armaghani saiid had 21. today's vicotry put south kroea in the top four medal round with two wins and one lose, a mixed-up group standing with each team being tied with one win and one lose on monday. south korea's hope for entering top-four was almost dim on sunday when they went down to japan 91 -94 but it became alive after japan was upset by iran on monday. iran, defeated by chinese taipei on sunday, also needed a win from today's match to earn a semifinal berth. but the south koreans turned out to be too fast and accurate for their iranian foes, leading all the way before building a half-time lead at 55-35. in the seocnd half the south koreans five starters widened the margin to 60-37 before ace center kim yoo-taek came out of the court for a rest at the eighth minute. the iranian cagers took the chance to fight back with fast breaks and three-point baskets and narrowed the deficit to 94-79 with seven minutes to go. kim, however, came back to the court and the south koreans lifted the 25-point margin victory till the final bell.

        And the knockout/classification.

lim avelino scored 18 points to lead the all-professional philippine team to a 94-90 semifinal victory over japan in the asian games men's basketball tournament here thursday. the philippines will face defending champion china in saturday's final, for tournament champion title which they have longed for 28 years. the vetaren-paced philippine cagers surged back strongly with a 21-11 run led by allan caidic's three three-pointers and burst ahead at 69-61 eight minutes into the seocnd half. supported by their roaring home fans, the filipinos carried the lead tightly with venancio paras's inside tip-ins, lim avelino's cut-in lay-ups and magsanoc's sharp shots till 83-75 with five minutes to go. though the japanese launched out a full-court defence and three-point game to cut the difficit to only four points at 94-90 with 37 seconds to go, the more experienced filipino profassionals yielded the japanese with their 30-second play to seal the game in their favor and a berth for the final. "i think both the philippines and japan deserved to fight for the goal medal but we took a bit more chance in today's games," robert jaworski told a press conference after the thrilling fight. japan's head coach shimizu yoshinori said at the conference that: "it's a pitty for us to lose with such a small margin of four points, becasue our two best players, the 1.94-meter shimonura katsuya and the 1.98-meter tsujimura hiroshi, got injured and were not up to their best form now." saturday's final will be the second sino-filipino confrontation after china's sound 125-60 triumph over the philippines in a quartefinal group a match last monday. when asked how his team plays the defending champion china in the final, jaworski said: "we have no choice but confidance." china entered the final by holding down a south korea 92-88 in a tough contest earlier this afternooin. the japanese took their tight advantage to jump to an early 25-13 lead in the mid-way of the first half with accurate middle distance shots and follow-up baskts. but the filipinos fought back at 36-all with their tight defence and ronaldo magsanoc's two three-point goals and two freethrows to put the filipinos ahead at 41-36 at the 16th minute. but the taller japanese put their team together and took over the lead at 42-41 and stayed ahead at 50-45 at the interval. the top scorer for the philippines was lim avelino with 18 points and yasuda kuniharu grabbed the most points for japan with 24.
defending champion china had to rallied hardly from a 37-44 half-time down to edge out south korea 92-88 in a grulling semifnal of the men's basketball matches at the 11th asian games here on thursday. china remained the only unbeaten team into the final slated on saturday where they will take on the winner of the other semifinal later tonight between japan and the pilippines for the gold and silver medals. south korea will meet the loser of the semifinal to decide the bronze title and the fourth place. . china started with poor shooting and loose man-to-man defence which allowed south korean to take a 12-6 lead with five minutes into the play. and then the chinese made several pass errors and unforced mistakes in fastbreaks, trailing furthre behind at 44-37 by the interval. the chinese cagers turned out a tight whole court press to caught up with the south koreans at 57-57 with seven minutes into the second half and then surged ahead 87-75 with fastbreaks and waves of inside attacks with three minutes on the clock. though the more experienced south koreans burst to a 13-7 run to cut the deficit to 4 points but found no more time for them to pull down the chinese before the clock running out. "we considered south korea a very strong team before the game, but our young players appeared inpatient with the koreans' 30second play in the first half and were called for many fouls," wang changyou, head coach of the chinese team told a press conference after the game. china and south korea have been traditional basketball rivals both in men's and women's event for more than 20 years. but chinese men's cagers have won all their three encounters this year before today's match. the two teams met last month at the world championshs during which china claimed the win with 22-points. kim in-kun, head coach of the south korean squad, told reporters that:"we konw each other very well. our players know what the chinese players will do. so we did very well in our 30second play today. "but we have the disadvantage in height and our physical contition were down in the second half so we lost the game. we were tired," kim added. the match were played very fiercely in the second half with four chinese players, including key-play-maker gung luming, and three koreans, including 33-year-old sharp-shooter lee choong-hee, being fouled out. "the games was tough, but that was what we needed to experience our young players before the final. our players won all the games they had played so easy, especially the 125-60 win over the all-pro-filipinos who gave up early in the first half." said wang changyou. "no matter who wins the second semifinal between japan and the philippines, they will surely to produce tough challenge to us in the final. as i said earlier the philippines' defeat didn't reflect their real strength," added wang at the end of the conference. china's top scorer was zhang yong jun with 23 points while ma jain added 17 and wang fei with 14. the only other double figure scorer for china was gong xiaobin with 12. kim hyun-jun hit a game high 30-points for south korea and kim yoo-taek added 17 and hur jae with 16.
chinese taipei finished fifth at the asiad men's baksetball tournament after beating the united arab emirates (uae) 105-81 in a palyoff match here on friday. chinese taipei played an accurate three-point shooting game by netting 14 goals behind the 6.25-meter arch line. it was the second encounter between the two sides at the asian games after their preliminary group d game where chinese taiepi won 68-60 (36-32) last wednesday. but the chinese taipei squad showed their teamwork depth fully from the very beginning of today's match and led the frist half by 52-36. the chinese taipei cagers hit eight of their total 14 three-point baskets in the second half before widening the marion to 24 points at the final buzzer. tsai fu-tasi was scored 17 points while teamates li chih-chiang and tseng tseng-chiu added 16 and 14 points respectively. the top scorer for the uae was al-baddal hamdan with a game high 23 points. in other play-off matches in the afternoon, saudi arabia beat pakistan 103-75 (54-44) for the 9th place. earlier in the evening, iran outplayed the democratic people's republic of korea 88-71 (51-34) to take the 7th spot. a winless hong kong side fell to the bottom of the 11-team competition. the men's and women's basketball finals of the asian games will be held on saturday.
iran outplayed dpr korea 88-71 in a play-off for the seventh place at the asian games men's basketball tournament here on friday. the iranians played a faster game than their dpr korean counterparts and led all the way to the halftime at 51-34. the dpr koreans, with 2.31-meter giant li myong hun on the court, fought desperatly in the second half narrow the deficit. they succeeded at a time to bring the margin down to 15 points but could not keep it going. li, the tallest center in asia, was the top scorer of the dpr korean side with 34 points. but the korean side cost dearly for his slow pace in the match. aramarz puresfahani put in the most iranian goals with 25, followed by saiid armaghani at 20. dpr korea finished eighth in the 11-team tournament, followed by saudi arabia in ninth, pakistan 10th and hong kong 11th.
saudi arabia beat pakistan 103-75 to take 9th place at the asian games men's basketball tourney here on friday. almeqrin abdulelan hit 21 points for saudi arabia's victory which edged pakistan to 10th position in the 11-team competition. the saudi arabians had to rally from 12-15 down with a full court press defence which stole three pakistani passes in a row to put the arabians ahead at 20-15. the saudi arabian five then extended the lead to 54-44 at the interval with accurate field shots and fast breaks. in the second half, saudi arabia dominated the game with abdulelan's three-point goals and khalifa ahmad's attacks on offensive rebounds and carried on their lead to a 28-point margin at the final buzzer. after the game, players and coaches of the two teams took pictures together under the basket board. in an early playoff on monday, hong kong was defeated by pakistan 74-80 (38 41) to finish 11th and the last in the 14-day men's basketball competition which will end on saturday. abdulelah netted eight three-pointers from 12 attempts to grab a game high 24 points for saudi arabia while the pakistani was led by amir iqbal with 17 points.
defending champions chinese men's cagers held down a strong rallying from an all-professional philippine team to retain their title in the asian games tonight. but coaches of both teams agreed that the asian basketball teams have a long way to go before they may have a say in the world basketball arena. the philippine pro cagers, formed only three weeks before the asian games, fully showed their glamour talent in preliminary matches before squeezing into the final. but the filipinos, lacking of height size and team depth, found it was too hard to topple the supremacy of the taller chinese. the chinese have an average height of 1.97 meters compared with the philippines' 1.88 meters. the young chinese players, staring by their two 20-year-old and 2.02-meter centers ma jian and gong xiaobin, trounced the pro filipinos 125-60 in their preliminary match and then 90-76 in the final for gold medal. the philippines, however, at least broke the decade domination by the two basketball powers in asia china and south korea by grabbing the silver medal in the beijing asiad. south korea finished third. after the match tonight, head coaches of the chinese and the philippine teams immediately turned their eyes on the asian basketball prospects in the world. roberto jaworski, the architecher of the philippine team, thought physical size would be one of the most important factors for asian teams to catch up with world basketball powerhouse in america and europe. "i think we asia can come up to the standard of world basketball when we become more creative and not so mechanical. we must start to think about it and fulfil it from now," said jaworski at the post-match press conference saturday. wang changyu, head coach of the chinese team, shared jaworski's opinion, adding asian teams must have more competitions with strong teams in the world in order to learn from them so that the asian basketball teams may improve themselves in term of defence, physical condititons and tactics.
chinese cagers defeated all the opponents on their way to defend their title after trouncing the philippine team 90-76 to retain their top honor at the asian games here saturday. the all-pro filipinos claimed their remarkable silver title, their best clinch in the asian games since they won their 4th gold medal some 28-years ago. the philippines opened the score with joaquin loyzaga's left side shot but china answered it seconds afterward in the first minute into the play. the two sides then went on neck-in-neck till china's 2-meter ma jian pushed the chinese team up to lead 14-12 with a slam dunk from a fastbreak at the fourth minute. the taller chinese cagers tightened their defence and out-run their filipino foes with fastbreaks from 11 steals and burst ahead to 53-35 at the interval. the filipinos attempted to rally with their tough muscle defence which slowed down china's speed and narrowed the dificit to 69-57 with nine minutes before the full time bell. but china's 1.98-meter veteran center zheng bin showed up to out-rebound the filipinos and paced the chinese to a 88-68 lead with two-and-a-half minute left. everything appeared to be stalled in the waning time with china adding one more goal and the filipinos with eight-points. the chinese cagers stood apart and watched lim avelino dunking its team's last basket with a sinlge hand to end the competition of the 15-day and 11-team asiad men's beskatball tournament. wang fei was the top scorer for the gold medalists with 20 points while teammates zhang yongjun added 16 and sun fengwu 15. lim avelino hit a game high 25 points while caidic allan added the only other double figure scores for the philippines with 11. earlier in the evening south korea beat japan 99-74 (55-32) to cliched the bronze medal, edging japan the fourth place. chinese taipei, the united arab emrites, iran, dpr korea, saudi arabia, pakistan and hong kong took the fifth to the 11th places in that order.

great info on the 1990 asian games....any idea if info can be found on the 1995 ABC championships in seoul, south korea? i have the wiki page on the event, but id like to find more info on the games, in particular the indian team's games and its players averages.

there is a player from india named j menon who claims he averaged over 30ppg during the tournament, which i doubt because india was only averaging 67 ppg total during the tournament.

There was a great resource I recalled from when I was searching for India info before, the federation's website. Well a quick check on the Basketball Federation of India's annual reports show that Mr. Menon seems to be a fraud.

page 2 lists the roster from the 1995 ABC Championship....

He did not even participate in the 7th SAF Games...

Ram Kumar seems to check out well, as he is listed first in the ABC roster.
                          Here is the roster listed:

                          1. Ram Kumar
                          2. Jaya Shankar
                          3. B.S. Gautam
                          4. Virender Joshi
                          5. Ahok Kumar
                          6. Pankaj Malik
                          7. Mohd. Hasoon
                          8. Jaldeep Dhaliwal
                          9. Tejindarjeet Singh
                          10. Shreekant Reddy
                          11. Parminder Singh
                          12. Gagnesh Kumar

                              Big-time basketball comes to Chennai
                              Sanjay Rajan
                              --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CHENNAI, Aug 10: It's queer, and in one case surprising, that the last two captains of the Indian basketball teams will be in the spectators gallery of the Dr J Jayalalitha Indoor Complex than in the thick of action as the Golden Eagle International Invitational Championship, organised by the Golden Eagle Blue Star Sports Academy, assumes a new character on Monday.

It was at this very venue that Tamil Nadu's CV Sunny led India to gold in the SAF Games in 1995 and with him will be statemate Jayasankar Menon, who led India in the 1995 Asian Basketball Championship in Seoul and brought the country higher recognition two months ago when he was the only Indian in the ABC Asian All-Star side against the Korean National team, ranked 12th in the World, for the FILA-sponsored first ABC All-Star Extravaganza in Seoul.

Jayasankar's non-inclusion in the probables camp at Jamshedpur for no apparent reason tells a sad tale, but it is the situation Indian basketball is in as this championship becomes the first-ever international invitational basketball event for men in the country.

For a sport which has an impressive following, enough is not being done by the governing body. How else can one explain the fact that India's performance in the men's Asian Basketball Championship (ABC) has fallen drastically.

Finishing fifth in the Calcutta ABC in 1981 was among India's best showing. They were sixth in the Bangkok ABC (1987) and Beijing ABC (1989) and 13th in the Koby ABC (1991) and Seoul ABC (1995), missing out on the 1993 event in Jakarta.

This is due to lack of international exposure, feel many old players, and using the premier Asian championship as a training ground for youngsters. And here is where one hopes this six-day event, to be played on a league-cum-knockout basis, is the first of many more to come.

Philippines, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and hosts India are the countries participating. Tamil Nadu, the National champions, are the sixth team, filling the slot of Uzbekistan. This was announced at a press briefing on Saturday by organising secretary P Narasimhan.

In the position matches at the last ABC, India beat Malaysia but lost to Philippines. But Malaysians and the Filipinos play aggressively and are fighters. They also have a professional league back home. And Bangladesh and Sri Lanka did not pose any problems for India in the SAF Games, two years ago.
