Here is a thread for cover versions of well-known and not so well-known hits. Please also mention the original tune if you know who is it by.

The songs can be a straight cover without much change, a cover in another genre of music or even in an altogether another language. It may be a country-specific version we generally never hear about.

PS: It can be good or bad, a version you adore or a version you hate. What you hate though may be a gem to another person.. and yes we will have the disparaging comments that nobody can do better than the original or that a new artist has ruined a classic... oh yeh!

nobody can do better than the originalThis is mostly true I'm afraid, even some of the best covers. Many cover songs are great, but if a cover version is to be TRULY memorable it needs to have a completely different outlook and feel (unless the original singer is far less famous). I liked your Cathy Beberian covers of the Beatles songs, even though I rarely listen to opera(tic?) music.

Here's a cross-cultural example of completely transforming a song's mood:

Original: Faye Wong - "I Will"/Mandarin Chinese, sad :(

In 1977 Japanese diva Miyuki Nakajima wrote this song "Rouge" for fellow singer Naomi Chiaki, later covering it herself. In 1992, a young Faye Wong covered it in Cantonese under the title "Fragile Woman", and in the following years the song became a major regional hit, particularly in Vietnam and Thailand. Reportedly there is also a Hindi version but I can't find it.

What a great collection of covers and interpretations in many languages. And so many different English lyrics to the same gorgeous songThe first English version was Jessica Jay's in 1993 -- "Broken Hearted Woman" -- which helped spread the song in S/E Asia and sold millions copies. But the question emerges: who the hell is Jessica Jay? Some say she's Italian, some think she's Russian, some claim she's Filipino, and some think she's a robot. See this interesting blog, which also mentions this song -- "Song of The Year in 1993":
http://www.imaginaryplanet.net/weblogs/idiotprogrammer/2008/05/who-is-jessica-jay-answers-are-here-maybe/

The accent in the song is fairly noticeable, but I'm not able to identify it. I think she's S/E Asian, but not necessarily Filipino. To me it's clearly a cover of Faye Wong's 1992 chart-topping Canto-pop version given the similar title and year, which means the singer must have listened to Hong Kong music, and I'm not sure too many Euro-singers do that at that pre-digital age.

Speaking of Faye Wong, see today's Washington Post (also mentioning this song as "Easily-Hurt Woman"). The Diva is back! (shed tears)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V_WQ6u9os50

An alternative video version by Donkeyboy

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P8ek0Q24-oE

--

Cover by Joe McElderry (X Factor 2009 UK winner)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ThaHfqpyQhI

It is a cheeky version by Joe McElderry, as Donkeyboy portrays in their alternative version about ambitions and what happens at talent competitions, and McElderry is exactly one such hopeful with the only difference that he won... singing "And I keep telling my reflection / Ambitions are already starting to fade" taking shots at his own self plus he sings courageously "If it's me that was going to take it /then I know that it wouldn't be straight" because actually he declared he was gay LOL

I just loved the way Joe McElderry gave his oiwn "twist" to the meaning. Now that's clever. The lyrics

Now, I can't behave
I feel it in my feet on the streets
But don't you know?
There's something I can feel when I breathe

I told you once
You're breaking into separate parts
But don't you know?
It's something that I can't live without

And if somebody's going to make it
Then this somebody ought to be you
And I keep telling my reflection
Ambitions are already starting to fade

I can't tolerate
The feelings that I feel when I feel
But don't you know?
Some feelings never seem to let go

Like a silverblade
I cut my way out of control
But don't you know?
Some blades will cut you right to the bone

And if somebody's going to make it
then this somebody ought to be you
And if somebody's going to fake it
then this somebody, somebody is you
If it's me that was going to take it
then I know that it wouldn't be straight
And I keep telling my reflection
Ambitions are already starting to fade

I Can't tolerate...
(Can't tolerate)
I Can't tolerate...
(Can't tolerate)

From Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Money_%28That%27s_What_I_Want%29):

"Money (That's What I Want)" is a 1959 hit single by Barrett Strong (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barrett_Strong) for the Tamla label, distributed nationally on Anna Records. The song was written by Tamla founder Berry Gordy and Janie Bradford, and became the first hit record for Gordy's Motown enterprise.
...
z6xkT7FMyTc

...The song has been covered by myriad artists, including Buddy Guy, The Beatles, Roy Orbison, The Searchers, John Lennon during his solo career, The Trashmen, The Kingsmen (US pop #16), The Rolling Stones, Freddie and the Dreamers, The Who, Led Zeppelin, The Doors, Ike & Tina Turner, The Babys, Bern Elliott and the Fenmen, Pearl Jam, Jerry Lee Lewis, The Flying Lizards (in the UK this is probably the best known version of the song, as it peaked at #5 in the singles chart in 1979), Shonen Knife, The Pretenders, Scissor Sisters, Secret Machines, The Sonics, The Smashing Pumpkins, Hanson, The B-52's, Cheap Trick, Josie and the Pussycats, Great White, RC Succession, The Blues Brothers, The Avengers, The Tragically Hip; plus Motown labelmates The Supremes, Thee Midniters, Jr. Walker & the All Stars, The Miracles, Etta James, Jimmy Barnes, Waylon Jennings and Boyz II Men, and The Rembrandts.

The song was featured in the movie Animal House in which it was performed by John Belushi. When the Blues Brothers band covered the song 18 years later on their Blues Brothers & Friends: LIVE! From Chicago's H.O.B album it was performed by John's brother Jim Belushi in the role of Brother Zee Blues along with Elwood Blues and Sam Moore.

Also, the song was used in the Beatles biopic Backbeat performed by a band composed of alt-rock musicians (including Soul Asylum's David Pirner, R.E.M.'s Mike Mills, and Nirvana's Dave Grohl). It was mimed in the film by the actors playing the Beatles.

The British film The Bank Job featured the song as covered by The Storys, who were also featured as the wedding band in an early scene.

The song was listed as #288 on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

The Beatles' version

The Beatles recorded "Money (That's What I Want)" in seven takes on July 18, 1963 with their usual lineup. A series of piano overdubs were later added by producer George Martin. The song was released in November 1963 as the final track on their second United Kingdom album, With The Beatles.

According to George Harrison, the group discovered Strong's version in Brian Epstein's NEMS record store (though not a hit in the UK, it had been issued on London Records in 1960). They had previously performed it during their audition at Decca Records on January 1, 1962. They also recorded it six times for BBC radio. A live version, taped at a concert date in Stockholm, Sweden in October 1963, was included on Anthology 1.

"Africa" by Toto is such an iconic song:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=azVqekQBK8g

But here is a complete remake of "Africa" (rather than a straight cover version) with new added lyrics and rap arrangement by Karl Wolf, a Lebanese-Canadian star alongside Culture, a Canadian rapper: The music video was filmed in Muscat, Oman.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hMkPDOdOZMA

Karl Wolf also made, aptly I should day, a version dedicated to the World Cup in South Africa. That was filmed in Montreal without the rap part.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a-e-uieeAgk

Karl Wolf made a remake of it as "Lebanon". The song "Lebanon" in case you wondered was not found on the album and was never a single but became very popular just the same with many making their own video versions of it...

There is this very annoying song by Rebecca Black called "Friday". In case you don't know it (just kidding), here it is:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CD2LRROpph0

It has been subject of so much ridicule, yet people love it so much they make tons of cover parodies that crack you up.

The best though is this parody on an American talk show by Jimmy Fallon done on April 1, 2011 as a big joke featuring Stephen Colbert, a stand-up comic, Taylor Hicks, a former American Idol winner, an unidentified rapper (exactly as in the original video LOL although many say it was one of the co-writers of the song called Patrice Wilson) and Knicks City cheerleaders and many others.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eLAMhTorPCk

This is just awesome, making fool of themselves and utterly enjoying it. I bet even Rebecca Black the original singer is happy of this...

I guess that's why we have such great threads (like this cover versions thread) on Interbasket LOL

But the song was a huge hit in Scandinavian countries for some reason and it stayed at the top of charts Norway and Sweden and very high positions in Denmark in an amazing run. In Norway it stayed at #1 for 11 consecutive weeks, so around 3 months!!!

WHAT ARE WORDS

Anywhere you are, I am near
Anywhere you go, I'll be there
Anytime you whisper my name, you'll see
How every single promise I keep
Cuz what kind of guy would I be
If I was to leave when you need me most

What are words
If you really don't mean them
When you say them
What are words
If they're only for good times
Then they don't
When it's love
Yeah, you say them out loud
Those words, They never go away
They live on, even when we're gone

And I know an angel was sent just for me
And I know I'm meant to be where I am
And I'm gonna be
Standing right beside her tonight
And I'm gonna be by your side
I would never leave when she needs me most

What are words
If you really don't mean them
When you say them
What are words
If they're only for good times
Then they don't
When it's love
Yeah, you say them out loud
Those words, They never go away
They live on, even when we're gone

Anywhere you are, I am near
Anywhere you go, I'll be there
And I'm gonna be here forever more
Every single promise I keep
Cuz what kind of guy would I be
If I was to leave when you need me most

I'm forever keeping my angel close

Lyrics

Tu voudrais bien remplir ton seau
Arrête-toi Marie-Madeleine

Inch'Allah Inch'Allah Inch'Allah Inch'Allah

Inch'Allah Inch'Allah Inch'Allah Inch'Allah

Inch'Allah Inch'Allah Inch'Allah Inch'Allah

"J'ai un problème" is a nostalgic song by everlasting love birds Johnny Halliday and Sylvie Vartan in 1973

Ga46uT4O_Xg

See it revived exactly 38 years later by these two delightful and absolutely gorgeous and charming duo Marie-Eve Janvier (French Canadian from Quebec) & Jean-François Breau (Canadian of Acadian origin from Hamilton, Ontario)

LYRICS
J'AI UN PROBLEME

[Sylvie]: Dis-moi pourquoi tu es mon seul probleme
[Johnny]: Dis-moi pourquoi tu es mon seul souci

[J]: En perdant on y gagne quand meme
[S]: Et puis apres tout, on n’a pas choisi

[Together]:

Sara Bareilles & Ingrid Michaelson - "Winter Song"

It was a hit in Canada in 2008 and in Ireland in 2011.

E7B9PrfNkAM

An Irish charity initiative that started in a single tweet message resulted in this charity single that was also a hit this week in Ireland. It was one week from message that all this support emanated. It was just another week before it was released and charted. So all it took was 2-3 weeks really.

WINTER SONG
Lyrics

Bum bum bum bum bum bum bum bum
Bum bum bum bum bum bum
Bum bum bum bum bum bum

This is my winter song to you.
The storm is coming soon,
It rolls in from the sea

My voice; a beacon in the night.
My words will be your light,
To carry you to me.

Is love alive?
Is love alive?
Is love

They say that things just cannot grow
Beneath the winter snow,
Or so i have been told.

They say were buried far,
Just like a distant star
I simply cannot hold.

Is love alive?
Is love alive?
Is love alive?

This is my winter song.
December never felt so wrong,
Cause youre not where you belong;
Inside my arms.

Bum bum bum bum bum bum bum bum
Bum bum bum bum bum bum
Bum bum bum bum bum bum

I still believe in summer days.
The seasons always change
And life will find a way.

Ill be your harvester of light
And send it out tonight
So we can start again.

Is love alive?
Is love alive?
Is love alive?

This is my winter song.
December never felt so wrong,
'Cause you're not where you belong;
Inside my arms.

This is my winter song to you.
The storm is coming soon
It rolls in from the sea.

My love a beacon in the night.
My words will be your light
To carry you to me.

Is love alive?

This is probably the Chinese song that had generated the most language versions, thanks to a TV series that was #1 in at least a dozen Asian countries/territories in the early 1990s. You can see what the show is about in the first vid (short description: a black man in ancient China :D). The song now sounds a little "gay" and a bit old-fashioned but that was my childhood.

Original version: Mandarin

Cantonese (the pretty girl is best known for her softcore porn roles, but here it is a pleasant surprise... I could find half a dozen versions in Cantonese but I like hers the best)

It took me awhile to find all these, and I'm actually quite proud since I don't know any of the languages other than Chinese and English. I know from youtube comments that the show was also a huge hit in Burma but I can't find a Burmese version. I know from my Korean friend that the show also broke the rating record for highest rated foreign show in Korea, but there are no Korean versions that I can find.
