  • Intentionally scoring at own basket.. legal?

    Does this shit happen elsewhere?

Synopsis: Shanghai vs Hubei in All-China Games,
    1) if Shanghai wins by 5, both team advance to next round;
    2) if Shanghai wins by 13, Shanghai and Xinjiang advance
    3) if Shanghai wins by less than 5 or loses, Hubei and Xinjiang advance

So with 1.7 second to go, Shanghai was tied with Hubei but got chances at free throw. Shanghai wants to win by 5, therefore intentionally missing the free throws so game can go to overtime. But Hubei got the defensive rebounds and simply scored at own basket to avoid overtime. (A Chinese idiom: "Long night means more dreams.")

    video:

But the referees decided it was illegal so both teams went to vertime. In the end Shanghai won by 3 so they were eliminated, but Hubei's 2 players responsible for this act got a 1 game suspension in the playoffs.

yeah. i do remember that game. actually, i've watched it on TV. it's a rebounding situation after a missed free throw. the player got the defensive rebound and for some reason, immediately makes a lay up! lol. i believe, the player who made that is a certain SAMLANI. i forgot the teams playing on that time anymore. it's a long time ago. the other team got the extra 2 points. it's not intentional though.

100 percents legal. And you can say that it wasn't intentional - the player went for the rebound and the ball slipped out of his hands(It happened to me once...it wasn't intentional )
          47-70
          76-58

That's right, there's no way one can determine the degree of intentionality.
One famous own basket by Darryl Middleton in his Barcelona days. He actually dunked

was this the tnt vs red bull game? if it is and i remember it right, not only were tnt shooting on their own goal, they were also calling time outs although they no longer have any. this translates to technical fouls but red bull was aware of the ploy to get the game to overtime so they intentionally miss the free throws. but then again my memory on this one is unclear.

anyway, i think the refs can make their personal judgment whether the incident of shooting on their own basket is intentional or incidental. most of the time it is clear and obvious. so i guess, that's why the refs called it that way.

First of all, the basket is scored in such a way that can look unintentional, therefore it should count imo.
Secondly, I don't get it. Why did Hubei want 2 avoid OT? Were they really afraid they would lose by 13? Is there a bitter rivalry between the two teams that each one wanted 2 eliminate the other? If this were 2 happen in Greece, I suppose the final margin would b between 5-12 points, so that both teams would qualify and everybody would go home happy.

Well if it was intentional I think it should be deemed illegal. If it was a mistake, it should be counted.

I wonder what the player will feel when he accidentally scores on his opponent's goal. Must be a lot of shame...hehe

Remember Ricky Davis trying to get a triple-double?

He needed one rebound and intentionally "shot" the ball at the wrong basket to get that one last rebound...

He must have felt so accomplished afterwards. And he did!

Davis showed no remorse after the game, saying: "[The Jazz] should be mad. Any team that gets beat that bad shouldn't be happy. I'd probably be mad, too, losing by 20."

                        I just found this:

Rule 5, Section 1 of the league's official rules states that: "It is a violation for a player to attempt a field goal at an opponent's basket. The opposing team will be awarded the ball at the free throw line extended."
