If God exists he ows a match to Greece against Spain. Greece was robbed in the semis of 2007, don't forget. They say that Spain is the ultimate favorite. But the truth is that they have never won the trophy. So let's see. I am really proud of my team.

Indeed, it's funny it seems we will always have to face Spain after an extremely tough game in less than 24h.

Let's concentrate now. Serbs and Turks did. So can we!

U forgot the biggest robbery of all time.

Yugoslavia-Lithuania 1995 EC Robbery against Lithuania(not the only one at this tournament but nevermind)

What annoyed Greeks more back in 2007 wasn't the refs. It was the behavior of the Spanish players. Besides, Spain was a better team overall at the tournament. But having the opponents provoking officiating mistakes looked very very bad.
Anyway, if Spain plays like yesterday, they will win. If not, don't count us out yet.:)

I wont watch the game because I alread know the outcome.

I would propose this time the FYROMormonian approach. Lets loose with 120 points differencec against the clear favourite and save power for the bronze-medal game!

I think the last time we got a bronze medal was back in 1940 in Egypt.

A win against Spain would be a miracle. I don't give us many chances. Possible if we had Papaloukas, Diamantidis, Vasilopoulos and Tsartsaris but with only Spanoulis to close down, the Spanish should win. Greece needs a big game scoring-wise from Fotsis and Bourousis to have any hope and Spain to have a shitter.

If this game goes over 65-70 points, Greece will surely lose.

Good luck boys!

Greece is too exhausted and the schedule is against them. I believe that was the same thing that happened to them when they played Spain in 2006 and 2007. So clearly Spain should win.

Hopefully Rudy will not start his theatrics because once he does Navarro and Pau and the rest of the Spanish players start and then it becomes almost unbearable to watch the game.

The main hope for Greece to win the game IMO would be for Spanoulis, Sofo, Zisis, Fotsis, Bourousis all to play exceptional games together. If they do, Greece would beat Spain, however very unlikely because even though Bourousis and Zisis are very talented players they are also very inconsistent players.

So unless Spain plays bad they should win.

So unless Spain plays bad they should win.100% agree, to add, Greece needs to force the game in slow tempo, use Sofo to force Pau on fouls and anxiety, take the rebounds......and most of all, keep the score low in a very close match. I believe that if the score is level 3-4min before the end, most likely Greece would win it.

Συν Αθηνά και χείρα κίνει.;)

ΙIf we play like we played today we don't have a chance:(
But the game is today right? Saturday?

Seriously now... there is not a worse matchup for Greece than Spain, even against USA Greece has a betetr record recently than against Spain. I think it's 4-0 now right? 1 every year... has the time come for the yearly slap?

Anyway, I think Greece and Spain are clearly the two best European teams of the past five years, I think they both made the semi finals of the last three Eurobaskets, that counts for something.

I hope Greece can make Spain's life difficult tomorrow, and if they can do it, a miracle in the last minutes is welcome. If not, I will be satisfied with a good honest effort.

As for Spanish fans, as you see most Greek fans are being objective here and rarely have there been personal attacks against Spanish users in here... in fact not many even whine about the referees as you say but about SOME players' behaviour, which is a minority. One of those players is not playing tomorrow, so only 2-3 left, no problem. It should be a good game.

And can we, for once, not attack each other? Damn even Greeks and Turks did it today. :)

Let's calm down a little and review the greek presence at this Eurobasket from the beggining.

First of all, the greek team came here with new coach and a largely reniewd team . ( although many of the young players just a few months ago were a the young and the U-21 greek teams that got the silver medal at the WC and the golden at the EC of their categories).

Second, this team won easily the first 4 games, in order to guarantee their presence in final 8, and then they lost only on the last minute and with a basket difference from a Russia that was playing their last chances to proceed to the eight, and from the until then invincible France, at a game that none realised who wanted to win (actually my opinion is that these young and enthousiastic greek players gave a struggle against their winning mentality and the strategy of their coach, and hopefully a younger and more enthousiastic french destroyed the strategy of his coach, and gave the unwanted victory to France). Kazlauskas knew that the greek fans would be happy if the team proceeded to final-fourm and would consider it a failure if it didn't. So it was more important to avoid Spain, a team that is the bad daemon of Greece the last years. Now the fans are happy, and the team will be wellcome back even if they loose the next 2 games.

Third, now these boys have to play only for themselves. No psychological pressure at all. Let's hope that they still have the physical forces, to run 40 minutes and enjoy their play. For Spanoulis, the test if he can be the leader of the knew team is over - he led the team to final-4. For Big Sofo, it was a revival as basketball player. Until now, they were compared with the previous big stars - now the exam is over. Greek fans have a team they can trust for the next years.

Fourth, I think that psycologichal pressure is now on the Spanish side. They need their EC, greeks allready have some. Spain will struggle to win, Greece will enjoy the play. In such a situation, surprises can occcur.....

Enough with the "young and inexperienced" mantra. I mean, today it was Zissis 100th game with the national team, tomorrow it will be Spanoulis' 100th, and I see the same dumb face of Fotsis every year in every tournament that I can remember. Yes, Greece brought two players from the u-21 (which isn't that big of a deal, actually) but their role is rather superfluous anyway. (They didn't play today, for example). Printezis is the youngest player in the rotation and he is not that young and certainly not that inexperienced.

Experience is not a matter of age.

Printezis might be young for example but he got more international tournament experience than Kalambokis who is 31. Actually Kalambokis might be the oldest guy of Eurobasket who is appearing in an international tournament for the first time.

Kaimakoglou doesn't have international experience either...

Perperoglou doesn't have international experience either...

For Printezis it's the second tournament...

So we got Calathes, Koufos, Perperoglou, Kaimakoglou, Kalambokis and Printezis close to non serious senior international experience, that's half of the squad already...

So before speaking actually get the facts right.

Fotsis is the only one that plays in EC since 2001, Spanoulis, Zisis, Boroussis since 2005. The rest are new. And of course until 2007 the stars were Papaloukas, Diamantidis. Thats why I talk about a new team.

I hope we win but Spain is the clear favourite for the win... Spanoulis is difficult to repeat such a good performance for a second day in a row and I dont see Kazla rotating too much...anyways I had said in the beginning of the tournament that I would be satisfied if we reached top-5, so mission accomplished! of course it wouldnt hurt if we reached the final!

As far as the spanish team is concerned, they play great basketball, well not this year, and i always loved to watch them play. As another guy stated, my only problem is the flopping thing they do, which they dont need it imo. Can you imagine Michael Jordan falling down like a dead bird every time the defender touched him? It would surely be a pity.

off-topic: I've noticed there are some people in this forum that show deep hatred and bitterness about Greece: UJKO, qiangdade, captain caveman and Richey666. Every time they get the chance they try to undervalue the greek team. they are like: Greece vs. Team X, we'll support team X till death...well if you have any kind of political, geographical etc problem with Greece, please keep it out of this forum...of course you can have whatever opinion u want but it becomes tiresome to spam almost every greek thread with things like "greece sucks, you'll be humiliated, etc". cheers...

Spain is undoubtedly the clear favorite. Yet I do not agree with those predicting that Spain will crush Greece.

It may not be a good benchmark to speak of the Greek defense by looking at the game against Turkey, however, at any time during the game, Greece never gave up trying to play it tough. Hope they can repeat the same competitive play against Spain as well. One drawback on this - how much Greece can reap the benefits of such defense depends considerably on the referees' attitudes. Last comment on Greece, I hope Spanoulis can keep up the good work.

I really enjoyed watching Spain the other day and it reminded me once again why I love this game. Everyone did a good job and even Scariolo looked fine to me. :p As long as Pau is unstoppable at eurobasket level, Spain remains favorite on any game they play.

I think that the key for defeating Spain is:

1. Fast 2 vs 1 against Gasol in the paint, never let him think, sometimes he gets stuck and doesn't have time to pass the ball to a mate in good conditions.

2. Use a low tempo basketball, Greece needs to make the game go with a low score.

3. Stop Spanish counterattacks and transitions by any means, never let them run.

4. Have an inspired day in outside shooting, Spain is much stronger under basket.

5. They need best versions of their PG's, absence of Diamantidis and especially Papaloukas, who is by far the most intelligent playmaker in Europe, makes a huge hole that Greece needs to fix.

I wouldn't say that Spain is stronger than Greece under basket just because of 1 player. I think that either Sofoklis or Bourousis can match Gasol if they really in a good mood.In my opinion Greece should worry more about Navaro and not let him score 3pts.

If Spain plays the same kind of basketball they have delivered in the last games, I think it will be extremely difficult for Greece to build enough opposition on the court.

Keep in mind Spain thrives playing up-tempo basketball. So Greece will probably need to slow it down in order to have chances of getting away with the victory. But they don't have the likes of Papaloukas and Diamantidis to control the tempo of the game, and I'm not sure it's in Kazlauskas' book to play the physical-fouling game, which has been necessary to put Spain in trouble. Teams like Slovenia, Serbia or Great Britain have committed around 30 fouls on the Spanish team. Only Turkey could challenge Spain with a low amount, but that was a bit of strange game where the referees allowed a surprising degree of contact. Meanwhile, Greece averages 20 personal fouls, with a tournament high of 23.

So unless Spain collapses again -rather unlikely-, or Greece enjoys one of these games when everything falls in -not a common feature-, I think this is a Spanish victory.

By the way, this is not Kazlauskas vs. Scariolo. It's been two games and a half that Scariolo is not on command of Spain's game style. He has already lost.

i agree that some users are provokative and you should ignore them, but the majority admits that spain has a very good team. the main criticism on your team is for the flopping "policy" adopted by your players. thats the main argument against your team. But big teams are always hated by some people. If referees pay attention to Spaniards' crying, whining and flopping, like they did in the semifinal of Beijing08, Spain will definitely win.

As I've already mentioned someday earlier, I am not a big fan of Greece, but this time I'll support them all the way. Mainly because of Kazlauskas and the fact that I just hate Spanish team and their players (no offense to Spanish people out here).

I am honestly jealous to Greece of having Kazlauskas as their headcoach. Although he has a relatively young and inexperienced team, they are pretty successful so far in the tournament. They may not be playing an incredibly attractive basketball, but they play winning basketball. Kazlauskas has a master's degree in Math, if I'm not mistaken, so his teams always play a precise and "calculated" basketball.

P.S. I just loved how happy Greek players were after winning in a quarter-final. Jumping all-around, singing and dancing in a circle around Kazla. :D As if they had won a final game.

P.S.S Is it just me or Spanoulis keeps touching his left eye everytime he makes a shot? Some kind of twitch or "superstition".

Greece had a bit of the "Luck of the Green" last night but they will have to play much better than that to have a chance of beating the Spanish.

The Spanish would have to have an off day and the Greeks at their absolute best to have a chance.
Anyway Spain have some major firepower in all areas don't they.

I hope the Spaniards don't flop and dive about like the Italian footballers which they seem to enjoy doing, that really annoys me.

And even although Pau Gasol is a great player don't you sometimes want to slap him in the face with that face he puts on sometimes.

I suppose since you dont miss him,you like how fast we are playing.we did something like 20 fast breaks with Turkey, and about 200 total in this competition.I HAVE NEVER SEEN A NATRIONAL TEAM BEFORE TO BE AFRAID AND AVOID FAST BRAKES!!! i wonder how we will catch up with the spanish so slow that we play.yesterday we should have scored at least 14 points by fast breaks, but the coach hasnt trained them to play like that i suppose...

So with Yannakis we were playing fast?

Come on, put your excuses away and let's see what team is better.

I'm reading you and it makes me laugh. Some of you come up with the referees thing, some others come up with how tired the Greek team is... Man, are you serious?

It's going to be a tough game, I see both teams in a good moment, the two teams are good enough to compete against each other... Let's play the game and see what team is better: no excuses, the winner wins it all. I'm tired of reading guys throwing excuses to have something to cover the eventual loss

Have you ever heard about Mundobasket '90 in Argentina?

Yannakis is the one and only Dragon._

Kazlauskas is the best coach we've ever had, and it should be noted Yannakis himself suggested Kazlauskas. ;)

As for Spain, they have my respect for playing the best basketball around in the last years.

Yannakis always wanted to be considered equal (or even better) than Galis.

People also said many times that Galis was thinking about money but he never showed this. Yannakis on the other hand...

Yannakis didn't recommend anybody, we turned to Kazlauskas when Messina said no.

As for remembering 1990, I've been watching (and playing) basketball since 1986...

I know that fans from other countries hate my NT for flopping and because it's a strong team. The only thing I wanted was to say Captain Caveman to don't answer messages about this topic.

KWSN-Men said anybody wrote words I used, I wanted to prove I'm not lying. My only intention is to talk about basketball not provoking as he suggested. That's all.

I like the way Spain plays, I would like Greece to play more like that since we are more talented than our game is showing.

But for sure I don't like the flopping show that Spain put on in 2007. It was a disgrace and it was unfair to themselves mostly as they were the best team (by far I would say).

The truth is though that nobody had talked about "fucking spain" or "spanish bastards" on this thread, Greek or other. But you did, creating an atmosphere...

We all know that Spain objectively is a better team at the moment...especially comparing to a Greek team without Papaloukas and Diamantidis(basically).
Also they had an extra day to rest and their game with France was much easier(they made it to look like;) ) comparing to last night "thriller".
Conclusion : HELLAS will beat Spain just because we gonna play with heart and passion!!!

I do think they have to be significantly more tired than Spain. It's not so much a matter of the extra day for resting, but I think the overtime and the intensity of the game against Turkey could be very well be felt in today's game.

Coincidentally, yesterday Pau Gasol said in an interview that the Spanish team was very tired when they played the final against Russia back in 2007. I think they were a bit burned out after so many preparation games played on high pace, sponsoring events, and all that crap. But especially, the semifinal against Greece played the day before hurted them significantly. Gasol played 37 minutes then, Jiménez 36 or Calderón 34, in an extremely demanding game. And Russia was greatly physical on the Spanish team afterwards.

Yesterday Spanoulis played 41 minutes, Fotsis 43 or Zissis 35. I wouldn't underestimate this fact.

Meanwhile, considering how the tournament has unfolded for Spain, I don't think they will get too confident. I feel they respect Greece a lot and will provide close to top effort.

So with Yannakis we were playing fast?

Actually, if you see some 2005 games, you'll discover that we don't play any faster now - and CERTAINLY not any faster in an efficient manner.

Which is natural, coz when DD and Theo are away (and Calathes too inexperienced), Spanoulis and Zisis can't run the team from the rebound. If you notice, most of the - few, very few - Greek fast breaks come from steals, not rebounds

EDIT:
Partially, only partially explained by the fact that DD and Theo participated in rebounding as well

Personally I remember Kazlauskas' Oly with Papamakarios and Argyropoulos as PGs to run faster than Giannakis' Oly with Pap and Greer as PGs, and athletic players like Childress and Printezis in the roster (while Kazla had Agadakos, Barlos and Lewis).

My friend, your antics in 2007 were a disgrace to your team and country.

All other times we met you beat us fair and square. But that game was another story with Flopderon, Navarro and Ruddy giving an amazing actoring performance. Not all your players like that - Gasol and Garba haven't followed.

Last year, againt the US, I really wanted Spain to win. I also consider you an amazing team, in par with Serbia of the late 90s and early 00s.

Tonight you are the favorite and I respect that. I am not anxious, neither I demand from my team to win, since I consider them succesful even if they don't get a medal. If we had Pap, Diama and Vasilo and you without Calderon, I would say that a loss would be a failure.

Just try to be objective and humble first of all.

exactly the opposite,Yannakis was mostly after money.
trust me,i am an aris fan,and i lived that era.

And the guise of GALIS,was unbelievable. And how hellas treated him was totally unfair.the bastard mitroudis threw him out of aris.
AND GALIS cried.galis loved the people of aris, and they loved GALIS.all the town was loving him
Later the bastards yannakopouloi together with politis(wasnt responsible for`87,GALIS was, watch the crucial games, after scoring 40 pts or more,he took the last offensive rebounds) forced him to stop the basket.

yeah.... it doesnt have lyrics. A couple of years ago the gov was thinking in changing it so that our athletes could sing it. But I havent heard more about it. Actually I prefer it without them.

Uh oh, Spain with a mini-run at the end of the first. Greece should just stay with them and at least make it a close one to have a chance.

I believe that Hellas brothers wins this if Zisis ends the game with 13+ points, all other key players in Greece keeping the same average level as until this game that is.

Does anyone know what's doing Perperoglou on court, or why he's on court?

Panco

Spain is clearly better so far. Faster and more aggressive. Greek players seem to be tired, making the same stupid turnover 4 times in a row.
Perperouglu is terrible so far. Kazlauskas should take him off the court asap.

Greeks and excuses already. Just in the 2nd quarter?! Come on! This is a double digit lead already! Simply, Spain is playing very well. It looks like the talent level is just way far-off between these two teams.

I did not say that. Spain is way much better than Greece at the moment.

What i said, is look how Navaro plays. He did that two years ago too. And by the way, Spain beat greece fair and square in all the last games except on the one in 2007. So please stop it and pay a bit of attention to his comic acts.
